Early Humans {

Early Humans Historians rely on documents and written records to learn about the past Prehistory is the period before writing was developed Archaeology provides information that historians need

Archaeology Archaeology is the study of past societies through an analysis of what people have left behind Artifacts are objects such as tools, pottery, and weapons

Anthropology Anthropology is the study of human life and culture Anthropologists use artifacts and remains of humans to determine how people lived

Artifacts By analyzing artifacts such as pottery, tools, and weapons scientists learn about the social and military structures of a society By analyzing bones, skins, and plant seeds archaeologists and anthropologists are able to piece together

Dating Artifacts and Fossils How does dating fossils help scientists? Dating artifacts left by humans helps scientists understand the growth of early societies Dating human fossils makes it possible to understand when and where the first humans emerged

Methods of Dating Radiocarbon - scientists can calculate the age of an object by measuring the amount of radioactive carbon left in it Only accurate for dating objects that are no more than about 50,000 years old

Methods of Dating Microscopic and biological analyses of organic remains such as blood, hairs, and plant tissues left on rocks, and other objects give scientists more information Blood molecules may survive millions of years

Hominids to Homo Sapiens Hominids humans and other creatures that walk upright The earliest hominids lived in Africa as long as 3 to 4 million years ago called australopithecines meaning southern apes They used simple stone tools

Do Now What does pre- history mean? What do archeologists do? What were Hominids?

Hominids to Homo Sapiens Homo erectus species that emerged around 1.5 million years ago They were the first to leave Africa and move into Europe and Asia The used larger and more varied tools They learned to use fire to keep warm

Hominids to Homo Sapiens Homo sapiens appeared around 250,000 years ago Two distinct subgroups came from Homo sapiens Neanderthals and Homo sapiens sapiens

Neanderthals Remains have been dated between 100,000 30,000 B.C. and have been found in Europe and Southwest Asia Used a variety of stone tools and seem to the first early people to bury their dead Used skins of animals that they killed for food

Homo sapiens sapiens Homo sapiens sapiens were first modern humans Appeared in Africa between 150,000 200,000 years ago Believed they spread outside Africa around 100,000 years ago

Homo sapiens sapiens thrive Homo sapiens sapiens had replaced the Neanderthals Groups of people slowly moved out of their old hunting grounds most likely in search of food at about 2 to 3 miles per generation All humans today belong to the same subgroup of human beings

Paleolithic Age Paleolithic Age period of time when humans used simple stone tools It is often referred to as the Old Stone Age It was approximately 2,500,000 to 10,000 B.C.

Way of life Paleolithic people had a close relationship with the world around them. They hunted animals and new what berries, fruits, and plants to eat They invented spears, bow and arrows, and fishhooks which made hunting much easier Nomads people who moved from place to place

Way of life Men and women both helped to supply food Paleolithic people lived in caves and eventually built new structures with animal hides The use of fire was also very important as a way to cook food, stay warm, and scare off animals Artwork on cave walls was even done using mineral ores and animal fat

Exit Ticket What two subgroups came from Homo sapiens? Who were the first modern humans? What does nomad mean?
