THE OXHEAD TAVERN HISTORY With the religious revival of 1818-1820, an association was formed, which procured from Mr. Jesse Hitchcock, the right, under certain conditions to build a conference hall of his village lot in Brimfield, MA. In 1820, a two-story building was erected (where the present Town Hall now stands). The building was used as a Conference Hall by members of the Congregational Church. In the lower level was a tailor shop, private school, as well as a military store-room of the independent. Excerpt from "Historical Celebration of the town of Brimfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts" written by Reverend Charles M. Hyde, D.D, Published October 11, 1876. In 1854, Jesse Hitchcock's son Aldred sold the structure to Truman Charles. The building was then moved by Oxen to the south side of the village street in Fiskdale, MA. The building was then used as a shoe factory, but also served as a place of worship for Irish Catholics. A Priest from St. Mary's Church in the neighboring town of Southbridge, MA would come to say Mass until 1872, when the Irish Catholic's established their own church structure. An organization by the name of "Cercle Canadian Club" then purchased the building sometime in the 1870s as their meeting place. The building was also used as a Catholic grade school and social affairs. When no longer needed, it was sold to become a restaurant and saloon. In 1973, the building was purchased by the Boland Family, and was moved by truck to its present location.
