Tubestock Trader September 2016 Lysimachia Goldilocks Phormium 'Bronze Beauty' Dietes bicolor Elaeagnus x ebbingei Euonymous Gold Thumb Correa glabra Dietes grandiflora Clive s Comments In August I commented that a month is a long time in politics and the nursery industry it certainly has been! We were wondering who would buy Masters and what would happen with the Home Hardware group. The expectation was that a foreign investor would come on board with some money and new ideas. Well this won t be the case now. Home Hardware will come online with the Mitre 10 group which is not a bad thing although in many small to medium sized country towns there are two business selling hardware and plants one Mitre 10 and one Home Hardware. I expect we will see these merging which will make the remaining company more profitable but will see a loss of jobs when the other one goes. The bigger concern is the loss of the Masters sector. Whatever people think of Bunnings it is never good to have one player so dominant in a sector. It generally ends up in a reduction of choice and range. I don t see Bunnings suddenly changing their policy of low prices and wide range but the loss of Masters will result in a reduction at the grower level. This will in turn reduce diversity of supply and make it hard for new players to enter and grow their businesses. It is not like our industry is unique with concentration of business into a smaller number of companies. Look at the beer sector where it has been a worldwide shift. However we differ in this being done at the retail level more than the wholesale. We also differ in the size and spread of our wholesale (grower) and manufacturing (propagator/breeder/importer) sectors... Continued on page 4

Larkman Nurseries Pty Ltd September 2016 4 Clive s Comments Continued There are numerous small to medium companies with their own special selling points. In this sense we are like the fashion industry. They, however have managed to maintain the diversity of the retail and wholesale network whilst being dominated by the Australian retail duopoly. In Europe there are the big chains but there are also several retail companies with 20+ stores. This gives them the best of both worlds with the strength of the box stores keeping the sector stable and the independents giving diversity. They also have the benefit of being able to buy from growers across the whole of Europe. Giving each grower a huge possible market meaning they have the ability to specialise in narrow bands of plants and do large numbers of each variety. It has also meant that the level of quality and consistency is very high. This is not a case of envy as they have their own problems and all the friends I have there in the nursery industry have the same sort of issues we do: labour, access to funds, government regulation, cash flow, shrinking margins etc. It is more a case of seeing a strong and stable nursery sector with a wide breadth of growers and retailers. I believe that our marketing and plant development is as good as anywhere in the world but worry that we may end up with a one-sided sector. The other side issue is that Masters will take three months to close. Does this mean they will keep buying and selling for the full period or are they going to drag it out with a series of closing sales? Will they wind down some stores and consolidate stock into others? Whatever they do will have a major effect on retail sales over this spring. They have stopped ordering and as the plant stock has a limited shelf life it should be cleared quickly at a good price. Spring is here and looking good. Winter has been cold and wet so there is a built up desire to get in the garden which means the public will be out there looking to buy and plant. Most parts of the country have had reasonable winter rains and the dams are in good condition. The food craze is still growing and there is a constant influx of new gardeners trying for the first time to grow their own food. At the same time there is a steady increase in knowledge and confidence with those who first tried growing their food in the past few years. These folk are now looking to test their new found skills and tastes. Overall it looks like a busy spring. At a recent Hort Media/Seasol lunch I had the pleasure of hearing Sophie Thompson tell her story and how plants and gardening helped her get through some tough times. She spoke of how spending time in the garden relieved her stress and helped her focus on what was good in life. As an industry we really should be finding ways to promote the way gardening can be such a great medicine for a stressed life. She also spoke of some shocking statistics of the lack contact our youth have with nature. I grew up playing in the garden and climbing trees. She quoted the figure of only one in four children having climbed a tree and only one in three have planted their own food plants. Somehow we need to arrest this slide away from contact with plants. Sophie s feeling is we should be doing this through the grandparents. I think is a good concept that we can all work with. Footy finals are here and I hope your team does well. Mine missed, again. Hopefully all those supporters without a team in the finals will decide it is time to get back in touch with the garden. Wishing you all a good and busy spring.
