Markus, having spent much of his life in Ireland, the UK and Germany, together with James who has over 35 years experience in the hospitality industry came together with the idea of creating that unique British & Irish pub experience, combining it with the German Beer Garden concept and adding a traditional South African feel to this. The Hollow Tree has gone from strength to strength and now boasts 3 venues in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town. We offer a beautiful setting where young and old can come together and enjoy good, wholesome and traditional food and a place where people can enjoy a drink and feel like they re a local.

Declared a national monument in the 1980 s, the building still features many of its original characteristics including 200 year old oak trees in the garden. The premises were used as early as 1862 by the Van Riebeeckshof Mineral water company who bottled water from the permanent fountains on the grounds. After restorations, the building was used as a residence until being modified into a restaurant, tavern and functions venue in the early 2000 s. The Hollow Tree moved into the premises in September 2011 and is a popular venue for people of all ages and offers a great setting for meals, drinks and various types of functions.

It was then used as the municipal mangers residence, namely the Kirsten family until the early 1980 s when De Tijerkombuis (related to the Volkskombuis in Stellenbosch) was created from the restaurant area. The bar area was added in 1994. The building was declared a national monument in the 1980 s and still boasts many of the original fixtures and fittings including the floor, window frames and skirting boards. This is the original the Hollow Tree which was created in March 2011 and is an ever popular venue for all ages.
