Do you ever cheat? This was a question recently asked on a Health Network show some of my health buddies and I appeared on. After we all giggled a bit and asked the viewer to clarify, we discovered they were talking about drinking alcohol. This lead to each of us sharing our favorite cocktail recipes, so I decided to put together this awesome cocktail recipe guide for you. BUT BEFORE YOU GO ON PLEASE READ THESE IMPORTANT TIPS: Most social functions involve alcohol. If you don t proceed cautiously, they can be your undoing. I m talking about hangovers, but also the toll a few drinks can take on your weight and your health. Alcohol isn t sugar, but its fate is nearly the same. During the fermentation process, enzymes gobble up those sugars. Wine, beer, and hard alcohol generally don t have leftover sugars, though some cheaper or sweeter wines do. (Quality matters.) Obviously, if you mix cola or tonic water with liquor or you choose eggnog, you re getting alcohol and sugar. Your drink basically becomes dessert and one big disaster for your liver and waistline. If you don t drink, please don t start. If you do, stick primarily with red wine. One study found moderate red wine-drinking over four weeks improved HDL-C (your good cholesterol) and fibrinogen (which helps form blood clots). Red wine also contains resveratrol, a compound that helps prevent inflammation and aging. (You're still better off taking a supplement to get it, though.) Other than red wine, your best alcohol bet would be tequila, but if a few shots leave you diving into the chili cheese nachos, step away from the hard liquor! Regardless of what you choose, when you drink alcohol, you sideline fat burning. Alcohol cuts to the front of the metabolic line as soon as it arrives, and everything else including fat metabolism takes a backseat. Alcohol seems to stimulate (not decrease) appetite, and that third glass of cabernet can actually increase hunger and mindless grazing. That said, sometimes you re going to have a drink or two. Follow these rules to lessen alcohol s impact: Keep your hands full with a mineral water and clutch or iphone. You ll be less tempted when the server passes by with cocktails or cherry-pecan Brie and crackers. Alcohol on an empty stomach often spells disaster! Have your pinot noir as dessert or at least on a full stomach if you don t want to take a detour into Tipsy-ville. Have two glasses of filtered water after every alcoholic drink. Don t opt for a nightcap to help you sleep. While a few glasses of pinot can knock you out, it won t be quality rest, and you ll probably find yourself wide awake again at 3:30 a.m. Cheers to you and your health, JJ Copyright 2016 JJ Virgin & Associates, Inc.
