Vermilion, Lafayette (downtown). Third generation family-owned restaurant located in historic downtown Lafayette. One of the first restaurants to experiment with traditional Cajun cuisine back in the 1930s, producing innovative dishes such as crawfish stuffed flounder. Most of the crawfish dishes are good, and the eggplant 2

Classic diner dishes and atmosphere. Great friendly atmosphere. Vegetarian options. Good Blue Plate specials. Salads, gumbo, red beans and rice. Opens at 7am on weekdays, 8am Sat. and Sun. Mello Joy Café - 625 Jefferson St (downtown). The lunch menu contains a nice selection of salads and sandwiches. You can also just sit and enjoy a cup of The Original Cajun Coffee in a relaxing atmosphere. 232-0006. Olde Tyme Grocery - 218 W. St. Mary Blvd. Considered by many to serve the best poboys in town, and the fries are good, too. The Shrimp Poor-Boy, Oyster Poor-Boy, Meatball Poor-Boy, and Olde Tyme Special are especially recommended. Big enough to share. Served on Langlinais French Bread. Dine in or carry out. "An authentic Boulangerie & Patisserie." Not far from the Hilton and worth the walk. Sit and enjoy a French breakfast with a cup of good coffee. For lunch, have a sandwich or quiche. Closed Mon. 232-7921. Siro's Bistro - 920 W. Pinhook, French-Continental cuisine in a casual atmosphere. "The ultimate soup and sandwich bistro." Pinhook: 269-1434; Downtown: 234 8955. FARTHER OUT (5-10 MILES), BUT WORTH THE TRIP: Black's Oyster Bar. 319 Pere Megret, Abbeville. 20 minutes from Lafayette. A full service seafood restaurant. Wonderful atmosphere in an old bank building. Especially known for its raw oysters and fried seafood. 893-4266. Cafe Des Amis - 140 E. Bridge St., Breaux Bridge. Coffeehouse and bistro. Delicious home cooked meals. French Acadian cuisine. Local artists' work, memorabilia and antiques in a "museum-like" cafe. Zydeco brunch on Saturday mornings features live Zydeco band and a menu featuring Cajun/Creole favorites such as beignets, boudin, etc. A must if you can fit it into your schedule. Closed Monday. If you're in Grand Coteau for lunch, stop at the Kitchen Shop nearby for great quiche and desserts. Both are located on the main street going into town, across from the Academy of the Sacred Heart (183?) the oldest Catholic school for 5

Located 15-20 minutes from Lafayette, on Hwy 94, or one mile from I-10. Cajun food, music and dancing. The best known Cajun restaurant and dance hall, but often invaded by busloads of tourists. Nash's is located in an old Victorian mansion that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Very good Italian food, seafood, and steaks, in an elegant but relaxed atmosphere. Tuesday-Friday, 11 am -10 pm. Sunday Brunch 11am - 3 pm. 839-9333. Paul's Pirogue - 209 E. St. Peter St., Carencro. A wonderful seafood restaurant with rustic décor. Great gumbo and dessert.
