Not Again! Damaging Temperatures across Ohio Vineyards By: Imed Dami, Diane Kinney, and Shouxin Li, HCS-OSU While many of you attended in record numbers and enjoyed our annual Ohio Grape and Wine Conference held on February 16-17 in Dublin, vineyards were having a different experience with the coldest temperatures down to -20F and lower. Diane Kinney, assembled minimum temperatures that occurred between February 6 and 21 across Ohio. The lowest temperatures ranged between -2F and -29F. Of concern are the lowest temperatures (-20F and lower) recorded on the eastern shores of Lake Erie where most grapes are grown and particularly the vinifera type. During the conference, growers asked me many questions regarding these events and their impact on grapevines. Here is a summary of what we observed so far this year: Every year is different and vine cold hardiness in 2015 is definitely different than in 2014. Grapevines are more cold hardy this year than in 2014 and were at their maximum cold hardiness when hit by the sub-zero temperatures. Unlike last year, vines did not de-acclimate (lose hardiness) yet in 2015. Back on January 30, Shouxin Li measured the cold hardiness of 3 vinifera varieties expressed as LT50 (lethal temperature that kills 50% of the primary buds). Riesling was the most hardy (LT50 = -16.8F), followed by Cabernet franc (LT50 = -13F), and Chardonnay (LT50 = - 12F). In other words, the 3 varieties were at their maximum genetic potential of cold hardiness. Last year and on January 6-7, the same varieties sustained 100% bud damage when exposed to -12F. This year reminds me more of 2009 than 2014 with regards to midwinter cold hardiness. This is good, but there is the genetic make-up limitation of each variety and species. In fact, the extent of cold damage is affected by 3 main factors: genetic make-up of the grapevine, environment where the grapevine is growing, and cultural practices prior to the event. Grape varieties in Ohio fall into one of 4 main groups of cold hardiness: 1) cold tender group which includes all Vitis vinifera varieties (generally, LT50 = -5 to -10F), 2) moderately cold hardy hybrids (Chambourcin, Traminette, Vidal)(LT50 = -10F to -15F), 3) cold hardy hybrids (Aromella, Catawba, GR7, Niagara, Norton)(LT50 = -15 to -20F), and 4) very cold hardy Concord and Minnesota varieties (Frontenac, LaCrescent, Marquette)(LT50 = -20 to -30F and lower). On February 16 and 20, the OSU research vineyard in Wooster was exposed to - 9.7F and -9.4F, respectively. We collected cane samples of important varieties after those events and will share the results with you shortly in an upcoming OGEN issue. In the meantime, if you re ready to prune, make sure you collect canes to assess bud damage first. Guidelines on how to assess damage and adjust pruning are in the following articles posted on our website. Remember my talk at the 2015 conference all is not lost and % bud damage does not equate % crop loss. AARS Pruning Workshop, March 9 2015 by Dave Scurlock, OSU/OARDC Viticulture Outreach Specialist This pruning workshop will be held at the OSU AARS on Monday, March 9 2015 from 1pm to 3pm. Dr. Imed Dami, State Viticulturist, AARS Manager Greg Johns and Dave Scurlock, Viticulture Outreach will be on hand to help you better understand the effects of the Cold Winter Effects on our vineyards, assess bud injury and share pruning techniques. If you are traveling a distance you may want to stay overnight and attend the Winter Grape School. Dave Marrison, Dr. Jodi Creasap Gee and Greg Johns have put together an excellent program. Collect your grape wood (10-5 bud canes/variety) to assess winter injury 2 days prior to the workshop, wrap the wood in moist paper, place in a plastic and keep it at room temperature (70 0 F). This helps the buds oxidize or turn brown so it is easier to detect the damage if there is some. We will have some canes available to practice on if you do not want to bring your own until you return home.

Before joining E. & J. Gallo Winery, Peter was grape rootstock breeder and geneticist withh USDA ARS, based at Geneva, New York, for moree than 12 years and in that role he bred and introduced five grape varieties, including rootstocks and genetics research varieties. Lessons Learned from the 2014 Polar Vortex Dr. Imed Dami will be presenting an update on the trials of managing grapevines after winter injury as well as a summary of lessons learnedd from the 2014 polar vortex. Lessons Learned on Soil Sampling Eric Cotton, grape grower in Lake County, will share a comparison of soil test resultss run by three different testing laboratories. Learn how to read soil testss from different companies. Are you Measuring Up with your Pesticide Sprays and Adjuvents? Les Ober, OSU Extension Program Assistant and Certified Crop Consultant, will help producers learn how to be more accurate when it comes to measuring pesticides and will share more on spray adjuvents. Learn what they are and what doo they do. An update on the new 2,4D and Dicamba herbicides will also be discussed. Reservations are due by noon on March 2, 2015. 2015 Ohio Grape and Wine Conference Review by Dave Scurlock, OSU/OARDC Viticulture Outreach Specialist Photos supplied by Diane Kinney and Lisa Robbins This was the 42 nd meeting of the Ohio Grape and Wine Conference. This is one of the longest running grape and wine conferences in the country. There were approximately 240 attendees and 27 vendors representing both grape and wine products and services. The TTB, ODLC and FSA were also represented and available for public and private conversations concerning legal and informational topics. What an excellent group of people and resource we have in the state of Ohio. The conference was held at the Crowne Plaza in Dublin, Ohio which is a suburb of Columbus. The Sip, Sit and Learn event held the day before the conference was organized by the Ohio Wine Producers Organization, Executive Director Donnie Winchell. The day long learning session was organized for those recently in the wine business of those wanting to learn more about getting into the wine business. Topics ranged from winery design, to zoning, licensing, liquor laws, marketing, social media and production of quality grapes and wine. I would venture a guess that there were more than 40 speakers and panelists delivering vital information to the crowd of over a 100 attendees. What a great program! Viticulture Sessions

Ohio Wine Hall of Fame Inductee-Dave Scurlock What a truly tremendous honor to be recognized by your grape grower and wine producer family! Truly a humbling experience and very touching to be recognized for doing something that I love to do. And they pay you too? What a Blessing! I told Mary it is easier for me to take criticism than to hear such nice things being spoken. It touches my heart deeply. My family was invited to attend to see my other life, that they are aware of but have not had the opportunity to experience. Rockside Pruning Workshop Review by Dave Scurlock, OSU/OARDC Viticulture Outreach Specialist, Dr. Gary Gao, Small Fruit Research and Extension Specialist *All photos were taken by Ryan Slaughter,Research Associate located at the Piketon South Centers Research Facility It was a beautiful day to be in the vineyard on February 23, 2015 at Rockside Vineyards & Winery. There was a foot or so of snow on the ground, the low temperature was minus 6 0 F and the high for the day rocketed up to all of 6 0 F ABOVE ZERO. We did have wall to wall sunshine and the wind was light. We had 14 signed up and 15 showed up. Misery loves company but we had a great workshop. Some time was spent indoors, where it was a little warmer, so we could take our time and learn the parts of the vine and prune a vine that gave its life so others could benefit. We carefully pruned the vine and allowed pruning by committee so we were all on the same page. After the inside pruning demonstration we proceeded to our lab setup so we could cut and assess bud damage or at least learn the technique so everyone left any expert and will be able to go home and assess their own vineyard before pruning.
