Citrus Juice Forum 1 May 2018 MIA Club Leeton, Riverina Sponsorship Proposal 1

2 Citrus Juice Forum MIA Club, Racecourse Road, Leeton Tuesday, 1 May 2018 The Australian citrus industry is in a buoyant phase driven by demand from Asia for safe, healthy and sweet citrus. Exports reached a new high valued at AU$462 million and China became the number one export market for Australian citrus accounting for 70,000 tonnes to mainland China with a further 30,000 tonnes to Taiwan and Hong Kong. Changes in citrus tree plantings reflect a move toward navel oranges and mandarin types at the expense of juicing varieties, especially Valencia oranges. Returns for Valencia oranges have been low compared to fresh market citrus and investment by growers in the sector reflects this. Currently 60% of juicing varieties are older than 21 years. In the past two seasons there has been an increase in the return to growers for juice varieties. In this forum we will explore the reasons behind the increase and provide context for growers to determine if investing in juice varieties makes sense in the long term. We will discuss the decline of Florida and Brazil as world export markets; the impact of increasing price on the Australian consumer and; the potential for developing export markets for Australian premium juice. The forum will include speakers on variety and rootstock improvements as well as a field walk at the Valencia and rootstock trial site. The Australian citrus industry is a successful horticulture industry contributing 42% of the AU$1.1 billion dollars generated in export in 2017. Join us as we explore how we can add to this success by expanding the Australian citrus juice industry. Nathan Hancock CEO, Citrus Australia
