Welcome dinner together D 2 October 21 Sunday Hike to Monte Alban (~6 miles) Today we'll dig into Zapotecan history by hiking to Monte Alban and touring this historic ruin. We'll then experience a wonderful craft center and the studio of the original Alebrije artist, Manual Jimenez. We'll end our day back in Oaxaca with a delicious dinner together. Visit Alebrijes craft center 3 October 22 Monday Hike the Barrios of Oaxaca (~8 miles) After having breakfast in the local market, we'll take on an urban hike of Oaxaca. Our guides will take us through the many neighborhoods of Oaxaca, its cultural center, and many historical landmarks. We'll end the night with a nice dinner together in Oaxaca. Oaxaca of the Dead Hiking Adventure 4 October 23 Tuesday Hike the Pueblos del Valle (~9 miles) Travel to Sierra Madre mountains We start early with breakfast and head to the mid valley where we'll have a rural hike through the agricultural areas of the central Oaxacan valley. We'll learn to make tortillas, see how traditional carpets are made, and then drive to the first village of our mountain hiking adventure. La Neveria Cabañas See how traditional carpets are made Learn to make tortillas 5 October 24 Wednesday Hike La Neveria Benito Juarez Cuajimoloyas (~10 miles) Our day starts in the comedor where we'll have a homecooked breakfast; then we'll head out for our first mountain hike through rural villages and rain forests. D 6 October 25 Thursday Hike Cañon de Coyote (~5 miles) Filling up on a warm breakfast, we'll again take to the mountains, hiking from village to village. On this day we'll hike the historic Cañon de Coyote and hear the ancient stories of Zapotecs and coyotes. We'll end the night snug in our cabins with fireplaces and home cooked dinners. Oaxaca of the Dead Hiking Adventure 7 October 26 Friday Hike Los Trongones (~9 miles) Our hike today starts at the top of the mountain, leading us down to the Río Cara de León, continuing through trails that were used by ancestors of the pacific gulf. We might be able to see Trogones, the national bird whose plumage is red, white and green. The accessibility and views make this a hike one you don`t want to miss. We'll arrive in the village for a late lunch and then relax in our cabins or do additional hiking before dinner. Our mole workshop starts we ll be selecting chilis, cooking them, and preparing the condiments for our lunch together. We're free to explore the village or take our own hikes until we have dinner together in the comedor. Our hike's route has several interesting parts, such as El Catrin Viewpoint, the Amate tree, Yadina viewpoint, San Antonio mine where we ll learn about recent mining history. Then we'll drive to Capulálpam de Méndez to visit the San Mateo temple from 1731. Afterwards we ll enjoy a meal in a comedor of the pueblo magico, (magic village). We will have the option to visit Capulálpam de Méndez s Centro de Desarrollo de Medicina Indígena Tradicional de Capulálpam de Méndez. We may want to try temazcal or therapeutic massages; both of which are done with herbalist products and ancestral techniques. Oaxaca of the Dead Hiking Adventure 10 October 29 Monday Return to Oaxaca We'll leave the mountains by van and drive back to Oaxaca, visiting pueblos such as Ixtlan de Juárez and Guelatao de Juárez on our way. We ll stop for lunch at the restaurant Del Monte. Dinner on your own in Oaxaca. Stop at various tourist pueblos along the way B, L 11 October 30 Tuesday Travel to Tlacolula de Matamoros We'll hit the road early, stopping for breakfast along the way. Our hike starts through a path from a village named Roaguia, hiking up to 2200 meters and then back down. We will be hiking on an ancient trail used by the locals who wanted to go to Mitla, the biggest town of the area in order to buy and sell their goods at the market. A local family will host us for lunch, and then we'll visit the natural Hierve el Agua before returning back to Oaxaca in the late afternoon. Dinner on your own in Oaxaca. After dinner we'll drive out to Xoxocotlan Cemetery and tour the graveyard at midnight while learning about the of the Dead customs. We'll return back to the hotel late in the night.
