Not long after the last cannon was fired, having lost family and faith, the two strangers independently turned their backs on their homelands and headed west to San Francisco. They crossed paths in a boarding house and, ironically, it was the destruction of the war itself that led to the two becoming firm friends. Having experienced devastation, destruction and exploitation, they knew that a strong value system was the foundation of success. These values were rooted in the spirit of true generosity that thrived with an innovative hunger for excellence. Their names were Clement Mugg and Joshua Fenomah Bean, and in 1868 they lifted their bourbon glasses and toasted to bringing Mugg & Bean General Merchants to life.
