JOHN BROWN MEMORIAL PARK A KCBS BBQ COMPETITION EVENT WWW.BORDERWARBBQ.COM A Benefit for the John Brown Foundation
1 WHY A BORDER WAR? IN THE PAST The Border War refers to a turbulent local history with its roots in the American Civil War. A series of violent confrontations between anti-slavery and pro-slavery factions in the Kansas Territory and neighboring Missouri towns served as a proxy war between Northerners and Southerners over the issue of slavery in the United States between 1854 and 1861. The time, known to history as Bleeding Kansas, culminated in Kansas entering the Union as a free state on January 29, 1861. Osawatomie was right in the middle of the action. The Battle of Osawatomie occurred on August 30, 1856 when a faction of 30 free -staters led by guerilla-fighter and abolitionist John Brown took on a force of 250 Border Ruffians led by John William Reid. The battlefield is the site of our BBQ event, on which you stand today at John Brown Memorial Park. TODAY The old conflicts echo in our history books, graveyards, and monuments, but the old animosity between the great states of Kansas and Missouri has transformed across time into a rivalry centered over sports teams, state pride and now - great BBQ. The Border War BBQ is a benefit for the John Brown Foundation which is dedicated to preserving the history of John Brown and the Bleeding Kansas period. We named our event the Border War BBQ not only to pay homage to this history, but also to rekindle competition between these two great states. So as this event grows, we will honor the rivalry between Missouri and Kansas with special contests and prizes to enhance the competition. In the mean time, we invite you to take in the history of the first Border War that surrounds you while you enjoy the flavors and aromas from the latest Border War!

7 THE JOHN BROWN FOUNDATION The John Brown Foundation works to educate the public about John Brown and his role in changing American History. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) corporation, headquartered in Osawatomie, Kansas, the headquarters of John Brown during his abolitionist crusade in the Kansas Territory from 1855 to 1858. ADAIR CABIN While you are in Osawatomie, the Foundation encourages you to visit the Adair Cabin located in historic John Brown Memorial Park. Reverend Samuel Adair, and his wife, Florella, were peaceful abolitionists who came to Kansas and settled near Osawatomie, an abolitionist community and a center of conflict during Bleeding Kansas. The Adair cabin was a station on the Underground Railroad and Florella s half brother, John Brown, used this cabin as his headquarters. The cabin survived the Battle of Osawatomie where John Brown and 30 free-state defenders fought 250 proslavery militia in 1856. The Adair cabin has since been moved to the site of the Battle of Osawatomie, preserved, and opened to the public. The Adair Cabin, operated by the City of Osawatomie, is a Kansas State Historic Site and is on the National Register of Historic Places. RESTORE THE HOMESTEAD In 1904, Charles Adair son of Samuel and Florella built a frame farmhouse next to the Adair Cabin. Even though the cabin was relocated to its current site, the Adair farmhouse still stands today near the original cabin site. The home and 1.75 acre lot in west Osawatomie is proudly owned by the John Brown Foundation, purchased with the vision of restoring
8 the dilapidated home and opening the original site to visitors. The Foundation envisions a site with historical displays on John Brown, the Adairs, and Bleeding Kansas. The Foundation also seeks to transform the site into the John Brown Research Library with the goal of becoming the premier site for the scholarly study of John Brown and Territorial Kansas. GETTING INVOLVED The John Brown Foundation offers memberships and volunteer opportunities for individuals who believe in preserving the history from this important period in our nation s history. If you would like to learn more, visit the Foundation s Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/pages/john-brown-foundation-inc At this site you will find more information on the Foundation, Membership Opportunities and how you can donate to support the Foundation. WHAT IS A KCBS BBQ CONTEST? THE KANSAS CITY BARBEQUE SOCIETY (KCBS), a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and enjoying barbeque, is the world's largest organization of barbeque and grilling enthusiasts with over 15,000 members worldwide. KCBS sanctions over 400 barbeque contests coast-to-coast throughout America. A traditional sanctioned contest requires the teams to cook 4 meats (Chicken, Pork Ribs, Pork Butt, & Brisket). The contest operates under proprietary KCBS Rules and regulations which are provided to the teams prior to the contest. Entries are blind judged by KCBS certified judges and scored for presentation, taste and tenderness. Money and other awards are provided for the top scorers in each category. The combined top score for the four meats is crowned the Grand Champion. Grand Champions of traditional sanctioned contests are eligible for entry into the American Royal Invitational Contest and the Jack Daniels Invitational World Championship.
