ALBERTA ORDER BY JANUARY 17, 2011 OFFERING 199 The wines of Spain, Portugal, the Maconnais and Alsace Bodegas Sonsierra was founded in 1961 in San Vicente, an area which is historically dedicated to wine and where some of the best Rioja vineyards are located

CELLAR OFFERING 199 The wines of Spain, Portugal, the Maconnais and Alsace This Cellar Offering is based on some of the more traditional European wineproducing areas with a particular focus on Iberia. In recent years many of the old vineyards that were virtually abandoned have been rediscovered. Regions that were considered too hot to be of interest have been tamed using modern technology which allows grapes to be picked more quickly and at the optimum moment. From France, a range of wines from Alsace includes different terroirs and quality levels of Riesling and Gewurztraminer that make for interesting comparisons and finally some old favourites from Burgundy. VINOSELECCIÓN Madrid While it has a long history of producing wine, Spain is now the most innovative of the traditional European wine-producing countries. It was a pleasure to recently spend some time in Spain and to meet Maribel Gómez and the rest of the team at Vinoselección. We held an extensive tasting of interesting Spanish wines. This selection is a result of picking out the best of those tasted and includes wines representing estates from various areas across the country. About the Cover: Bodegas Sonsierra was founded in 1961 in San Vicente, an area which is historically dedicated to wine and where some of the best Rioja vineyards are located. The wines combine the traditional essence of Rioja with an ultra-modern vision of winemaking. As a result, great success has been achieved at the international level, their Crianza Vendimia Seleccionada taking gold at the Challenge International du Vin (France) and Mundus Vini (Germany) in 2010. 40 year old Monastrell vines at Altos del Cuadrado Monastrell is also known as Mourvèdre pain 2 OPIMIAN CELLAR OFFERING 199

5879 SANZ CLÁSICO, DO RUEDA, 2010, VINOS SANZ $11.17 6 BTLS/750 ML $67.00 Beautiful fruit and a lingering finish Today, Rueda is Spain s best white wine-producing region for crisp, fresh, gooseberry-flavoured wines. Vinos Sanz, one of the oldest wineries in the region, was established over a century ago before the DO existed and when the region produced mainly fortified wines. The winery continues to be run by the fourth generation of the Sanz family with the focus on creating high quality wines such as this Clásico, a superb example of the best of Verdejo from Rueda. [00] M8 D9 Verdejo, Viura Ripe, fresh grapefruit Pure fruit, medium weight, long finish Delicious now, drink within two years Thai-style mango salad with griddled prawns 5880 MONTE CASTRILLO ROSADO, DO RIBERA DEL DUERO, 2010, BODEGAS PEÑALBA LÓPEZ $10.67 6 BTLS/750 ML $64.00 Torremilanos is one of the oldest and largest estates in Ribera del Duero, close to Aranda. Established in 1903, it was acquired in 1975 by the Peñalba López family who increased plantings of Tempranillo so that the winery now sits in the middle of over 200ha of surrounding vineyards. The cooler 2010 summer produced grapes ideal for this Monte Castrillo Rosado; light and fruity with red fruits and a refreshing palate. [00] M9 D9 Typical Tempranillo aromas Tempranillo Strawberries, red berries, rose petals Crisp with balanced acidity Drink while fresh Aperitif, grilled salmon 5881 MO MONASTRELL, DO ALICANTE, 2008, BODEGAS SIERRA SALINAS $10.00 6 BTLS/750 ML $60.00 The Ramón Castaño family has made the production of high quality Monastrell its mission. The mature vineyards are found at the most southern end of the Sierra Salinas in Alicante. As a variety, Monastrell is able to withstand extreme temperature conditions between summer and winter, as well as prolonged drought periods; here the average rainfall is 150mm per year. The grapes are made into wine at the super-modern winery built in 2000. M8 D8 Meaty Monastrell Monastrell, Garnacha Tintorera, Cabernet Sauvignon Black cherries, figs, mint nuances Good concentration, soft, fine tannins Drink within two to three years Irish stew, ragout 5882 DOLFOS TEMPRANILLO, VINO DE LA TIERRA DE CASTILLA Y LEÓN, 2009, BODEGAS FARIÑA $10.00 6 BTLS/750 ML $60.00 Bernardo Fariña has produced this fruit-focussed Tempranillo; simple, soft, juicy and so enjoyable! The grapes were machine-harvested, crushed in the vineyard and subsequently fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to allow the fruit to fully express itself. M8 D8 Juicy fruit Tempranillo, Garnacha Quintessential Tempranillo, vibrant red cherries Succulent red fruits 16 - Enjoy now and drink within two years On its own, salad with pomegranate dressing SPAIN VINOSELECCIÓN >> ALBERTA 3

5883 ALTOS DEL CUADRADO MONASTRELL, DO JUMILLA, 2008, BODEGAS ALTOS DEL CUADRADO $10.00 6 BTLS/750 ML $60.00 This is another Monastrell-based blend produced by the Castaño family, this time from their winery in the Jumilla region. In this area, previously considered only fit to produce high alcohol, bulk wines, the family has 45ha of vines at 750 to 800M. Traditional Monastrell has been blended with Bordeaux varieties Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon and aged in French and American oak barrels for four months to give an easy style with blueberry fruits and generous aromas. M8 D9 the modern style coming out of Jumilla Monastrell, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon Savoury spice, figs Cherry fruit, blueberries, herbal Ready to be enjoyed now and through the next two years Lamb chops 5884 VIÑA ALJIBES, VINO DE LA TIERRA DE CASTILLA, 2008, BODEGAS LOS ALJIBES $10.17 6 BTLS/750 ML $61.00 The Los Aljibes vineyard is part of a much larger estate, 900ha in total, that includes olive groves, a stud farm, natural scrubland and lots of wildlife. 178ha of vineyards at an altitude just under 1000M surround the Castilian-style winery. At this altitude there are extremes in terms of temperatures. The grapes were picked by machine during the cool of night. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine was aged in oak vats for six months. It is a great value-for-money wine ready to drink now. M7 D8 An unusual combination of grape varieties Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo Appealing combination of red fruits and floral notes Mellow, supple and easy to drink with a red fruit finish Nice now, it will keep for two to three years Red meats, creamy French cheeses 5885 OPIMIAN CRIANZA ESPECIAL, DO LA MANCHA, 2009, FINCA ANTIGUA SA $11.00 6 BTLS/750 ML $66.00 Finca Antigua, an impressive, avant-garde, state-of-the-art winery, was built in 2002 by the Martínez Bujanda family from Rioja and sits within the 1000ha estate. 421ha are planted with Tempranillo and international varieties at high altitudes. This cuvée was produced specially for Opimian and spent six months in American oak barrels to give a touch of coconut which enhances the red fruit typical of the Tempranillo. M7 D7 Rioja expertise shines through Tempranillo Rich forest fruit and undergrowth Coconut and fruit with depth 16 - Lovely now while the fruit shines through, it will develop more meaty notes Asturian ham and bean stew 5886 SONSIERRA CRIANZA, VENDIMIA SELECCIONADA, 2007, DOCa RIOJA, BODEGAS SONSIERRA $11.50 6 BTLS/750 ML $69.00 Bodegas Sonsierra, situated in the Rioja Alavesa, has over 600ha of its own vineyards, all within easy reach of the bodega. The grapes for the Vendimia Seleccionada came from vines over 30 years in age on the foothills of the Sierra de Cantabria. Produced from 100% Tempranillo, after a long, slow fermentation and maceration on the skins, the wine was aged for 12 to 13 months in new American oak barrels. M7 D7 Elegant Rioja Tempranillo Red berries, mellow coconut oak Elegant fruits, fine tannins, good acidity Ready now, but will continue to develop more complexity in three to four years Standing rib roast 4 OPIMIAN CELLAR OFFERING 199 SPAIN VINOSELECCIÓN >>

5887 PUERTAS NOVAS, VENDIMIA SELECCIONADA, DO TORO, 2007, BODEGA VALPICULATA SL $12.17 6 BTLS/750 ML $73.00 Like other areas of Spain, the DO Toro, tucked away in the north west of Spain only 40km from the border with Portugal, has seen recent interest and investment from outside. In 1987, when the DO was founded, there were only four wineries; now there are over 40. In this Cellar Offering we have chosen three different styles of Toro. The Puertas Novas, Vendimia Seleccionada, is the most approachable with its focus on red berry fruits, elegance and soft tannins. M8 D9 Accessible Toro Tinta de Toro Cooked berry fruits Red fruit crumble, elegant structure Enjoy now At the cellars of Bodegas Peñalba López, the Torremilanos Crianza is aged in French oak barrels Lamb, creamy dishes SPAIN VINOSELECCIÓN >> ALBERTA 5

5888 MONTE CASTRILLO TINTO, DO RIBERA DEL DUERO, 2009, BODEGAS PEÑALBA LÓPEZ $12.17 6 BTLS/750 ML $73.00 The winery, one of those that pushed for the establishment of DO Ribera del Duero in 1982, is run by Pablo Peñalba and his wife Pilar Albéniz. The Monte Castrillo 2009 is produced from 100% Tempranillo with a focus on red berry fruit enhanced by seven months ageing in French oak barrels, adding a touch of spice and a long, smokey finish. M7 D8 Impressive Tempranillo Raspberries, cassis Fruity with a lingering, smokey aftertaste Enjoyable now, it will develop over the next two years Pork medallions in cream sauce 5889 FAUSTINO SELECCIÓN DE FAMILIA, DOCa RIOJA, 2008, BODEGAS FAUSTINO $13.50 6 BTLS/750 ML $81.00 A well-known name in Rioja, Bodegas Faustino is located right in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa sub-region in Oyón. It owns 650ha of vineyards and produces a wide range of Rioja styles. The Selección de Familia was produced from 100% Tempranillo. After careful selection in the vineyard, the grapes were fermented and aged in American oak for eight months and then transferred to French oak casks for a further six months to produce a wine full of soft, red fruits, quite light in structure and elegant in style. M7 D7 Soft and juicy Rioja Tempranillo Red fruits, toast and vanilla notes Soft, light and juicy, a delicious sipping wine 16 - This style is made and released to be enjoyed now and within the next few years Chicken in white wine and mushroom sauce 5890 IDRIAS SEVIL, DO SOMONTANO, 2005, BODEGAS SIERRA DE GUARA SI $13.83 6 BTLS/750 ML $83.00 Somontano in north east Spain, close to the French border, has quite a varied terrain with river valleys, the foothills of the Pyrénées and terraced mountainsides. Bodegas Sierra de Guara was established by Michel Mort in 1997. Close to Barbastro, it is named after the Guara peak. Here there are 65ha including 12ha of Cabernet Sauvignon and 28ha of Merlot in cool climate conditions. 2005 was a relatively warm year producing ripe fruit and tannins. The wine was aged in new French oak barrels for 16 months adding intense coffee and toasted notes which combine harmoniously with the red and blackberry flavours. M7 D7 Fine expression of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon Spicy raspberry, toasted oak Red fruits, spice, delicious velvet texture Already approachable, it will keep for three to four years Roast baby lamb 5891 TORREMILANOS CRIANZA, DO RIBERA DEL DUERO, 2008, BODEGAS PEÑALBA LÓPEZ $16.50 6 BTLS/750 ML $99.00 The Tempranillo grapes from this estate are grown on sand and chalk soils. Rain during the 2008 harvest meant further sorting, making it even more important than normal. The grapes were left to macerate on the skins for 18 days during and post fermentation after which time the wine was aged for 15 months in French oak barrels resulting in an elegant, creamy texture and complex bouquet. M6 D7 Spicy fruit Tempranillo Complex notes of raspberries, black pepper, dark chocolate Structured, powerful, complex It will continue to develop over three to four years Red meats, peppered steak 6 OPIMIAN CELLAR OFFERING 199 SPAIN VINOSELECCIÓN >>

As one of the pioneers of the region he has worked tirelessly to produce outstanding wines and has put Toro very definitely on the map. It is now his son Bernardo who is head winemaker. The wine is named after the collegiate church in Toro, considered to be one of the finest examples of Spanish Romanesque sculpture. 2004 was a hot vintage and the wine is showing attractive, developed complexity now. It is perfect for drinking or for laying down for a few years. M7 D8 SELECTUS, VINO DE LA TIERRA DE CASTILLA, 2007, BODEGA LOS ALJIBES $24.17 6 BTLS/750 ML $145.00 Produced only in the tiniest quantities in exceptional years, 2007 was very good for red wines. Strict bunch selection was carried out in the vineyard. This is a blend of international grape varieties; each was hand-picked at the optimum moment. Gentle pressing of the skins and subsequent malolactic fermentation and ageing in new French oak barrels for 18 months has produced a wine with herbal notes, typical of the Bordeaux varietals, real expression, depth and the potential to age. M6 D6 One of the original pioneers of Toro Tinta de Toro Spices, herbs, subtle hint of liquorice Good structure, spicy flavours continue with dry tannins on the finish Ready to drink now, but will keep for a further five years Garlic roasted lamb with rosemary Modern, powerful, exceptional Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot Green pepper, herbal, spicy Full-bodied, oak and spice with firm tannins Will develop more complexity over three to five years Roasted lamb, T-bone steak Top Left: Finca Antigua at dusk, Top Right: Finca Antigua oenologist Lauren Rosillo Bottom Left: Bodegas Faustino oenologist Rafael Martínez, Bottom Right: Bodegas Faustino cellars SPAIN VINOSELECCIÓN >> ALBERTA 7

5894 SPIRITUS SANCTI, GÉRARD DEPARDIEU, DO TORO, 2007, DOMAINE BERNARD MAGREZ $34.83 6 BTLS/750 ML $209.00 Bernard Magrez, owner of classed growth Château Pape- Clément in the Graves region of Bordeaux, has built up a portfolio of 39 wine estates around the world and strives to make excellent wines in each. The Spiritus Sancti was created in partnership with French actor Gérard Depardieu, himself a vigneron. A hugely concentrated wine, it was aged in new French Allier oak barrels for 18 months resulting in complexity, balance and a long finish. It will continue to develop until 2017. M6 D6 Muscular, multi-faceted flavour Tinta de Toro Developed meaty, gamey notes Powerful, big, rustic Interesting now, it will continue to develop for five to six years Stews, venison 5895 AUDITORI, DO MONTSANT, 2008, BODEGAS ACÚSTIC $35.67 6 BTLS/750 ML $214.00 Fantastic Garnacha Bodegas Acústic was founded in 2004. It is the personal project of Albert Jané of Jané Ventura in the Penedès and Oenologist Núria Ruiz. The objective was to re-discover the ancient vineyards, native varieties and traditions of Montsant and to maximize their expression in the wines produced. The Montsant DO sits around the Priorato DO and until 2001 was merely a sub-region of DO Tarragona, although it had long been recognized as producing quality wines. This extraordinary red is made from the fruit of knotted 55 to 80 year old bush vines which provides intensity, concentration and spiciness. Only 2,800 bottles were produced and although expensive, it is worth every penny! M5 D5 Garnacha Spicy, rich dark fruits, quite closed at the moment Concentrated, almost northern Rhône style, great structure This wine needs time to open up, it will be delicious in a few years and will last over 10 Venison, leg of lamb with rosemary BODEGAS CONCAVINS Montblanc, Barberà de la Conca, Catalonia Concavins, a former cooperative purchased in 1988 by the Carbonell Figueras family, is the leading bodega in Conca de Barberà in the north east of Spain. Winemaker Josep Vadri is producing great wines from a combination of indigenous grapes and more recently planted international varieties. This area formerly produced some of the best quality grapes for Cava, but its capability for quality still wines was first demonstrated by Torres. The region s potential is due to a combination of its geography, a crater-shaped valley that is protected by mountains, its altitude, an average of 400M, and the free-draining, chalky, alluvial soils. Concavins has 50ha of its own vineyards and continues to buy grapes locally from former members of the coop. Twenty year old Tempranillo vines - The variations in the rich and well-balanced soil provide natural qualities for viniculture 8 OPIMIAN CELLAR OFFERING 199 SPAIN VINOSELECCIÓN > BODEGAS CONCAVINS >>

5897 CASTILLO D MONTBLANC, BRUT CAVA, NV $12.83 6 BTLS/750 ML $77.00 Spanish sparkle The Spanish love to party; no doubt this encouraged the development of the Cava industry close to the city of Barcelona. Castillo D Montblanc Brut is produced from the three traditional Cava varieties Macabeu as the base, Xarello which gives the typical earthiness associated with Cava and the fine Parellada particularly suited to the higher altitudes of Conca de Barberà. Each variety was hand-picked and vinified according to the traditional method similar to champagne. This cuvée was aged on lees in bottle for approximately two years, compared to the standard nine months, to give extra complexity and fine mousse. [02] M8 D9 Macabeu, Xarel-lo, Parellada Delicate lime and apple fruit aromas Crisp, lively palate, a hint of toastiness 6 C Ready now Aperitif, sushi 5898 MONTBLANC 362 VIURA/CHARDONNAY, DO CONCA DE BARBERÀ, 2010 $9.17 12 BTLS/750 ML $110.00 Viura, also known as Macabeu, is a late-budding variety which has traditionally been grown in this area to produce base wines for Cava and is also the variety used to produce many white Rioja wines. Here, grapes from 30 year old Macabeu vines have been blended with Chardonnay grown at high altitude on well-drained limestone soils. The grapes were fermented in tank with no use of oak to produce lovely peachy, pineapple aromas and a zippy, crisp style. [01] M8 D9 A modern white from Spain Viura, Chardonnay Peaches, pineapple Fresh fruits, light, crisp finish Made for immediate enjoyment Aperitif, goat cheese salad 5899 MONTBLANC 362 TEMPRANILLO/CABERNET, DO CONCA DE BARBERÀ, 2010 $9.00 12 BTLS/750 ML $108.00 Tempranillo is the main varietal associated with Spain. Also known as Ull de Llebre (hare s eye) in Catalonia, here it has been blended with Cabernet Sauvignon. Each variety was harvested and fermented separately in stainless steel tanks followed by malolactic and short ageing in American oak barrels. The finished wine has typical Tempranillo red berries, red cherries, an intense colour and balanced structure. M8 D8 Soft, juicy fruit Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon Raspberries, cherries, strawberries Red fruits, a hint of vanilla Enjoy while in its youth, drink within two years Pâtés, mild charcuterie 5900 MONTBLANC 362 CABERNET/MERLOT CRIANÇA, DO CONCA DE BARBERÀ, 2008 $12.25 12 BTLS/750 ML $147.00 An interesting nose with plummy damson fruit and floral notes, a hint of tobacco continues through to the palate with juicy acidity and rustic, chewy tannins on the finish. The grapes, cultivated on calcareous soils with clay, were fermented and the wine aged in American oak barrels for 12 months, developing marked balsamic flavours. 5901 CLOS MONTBLANC SAUVIGNON BLANC, PREMIUM, DO CONCA DE BARBERÀ, 2010 $12.00 12 BTLS/750 ML $144.00 This refreshing, restrained style with herbal notes and crisp acidity is a reflection of the altitude of the 4ha that were planted 20 years ago on clay soils. In order to maximize the herbal characteristics of Sauvignon Blanc, harvesting is carried out at night when temperatures are cool. The juice is fermented at low temperatures to give a balanced wine with gooseberry and greengage flavours and a long, mineral finish. [00] M8 D8 Graceful, herbal style Sauvignon Blanc Herbal, nettle nose Greengages, vigorous acidity Ready to please Green bean salad with sun-dried tomatoes 5902 CLOS MONTBLANC CHARDONNAY, PREMIUM, DO CONCA DE BARBERÀ, 2010 $12.33 12 BTLS/750 ML $148.00 The Chardonnay grapes were grown in several different plots around the Conca de Barberà area, each harvested at its optimum ripeness. After a short period of skin contact to maximize fruit aromas, the grapes were pressed and the juice fermented in a combination of barrels from the Alliers, Nevers and Tronçais forests in France, and tank, giving an added layer of complexity and creamy texture. [01] M8 D8 Richness with finesse Chardonnay Tropical, pineapple Fleshy fruit, balanced Drink within two years Butternut squash risotto 5903 CLOS MONTBLANC ROSAT, PREMIUM, DO CONCA DE BARBERÀ, 2010 $10.67 12 BTLS/750 ML $128.00 An unusual blend made from the four varietals grown on the estate, the vinification technique used was developed by Concavins and is known as cascada where each variety is picked in succession and added to the previous. This produces wines with lots of red berry fruits on the nose which carry through to the flavoursome palate that ends with freshness. [00] M9 D9 Four grape varieties in one Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo Redcurrants, raspberries, blueberries Soft, juicy red fruits Delicious now Aperitif, mild creamy cheeses 5904 CLOS MONTBLANC XIPELLA, PREMIUM, DO CONCA DE BARBERÀ, 2007 $12.33 12 BTLS/750 ML $148.00 A blend of the traditional Tempranillo offers red fruits and cherries on the nose with international varietals Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot providing structure and weight. Grown on chalky clay soils, the grapes were fermented in barrel and the wine subsequently aged in American, French and Hungarian oak barrels for 14 months. This wine is big with an intense plum colour, ripe plum jam and black cherry notes and firm tannins. Grapes grown on the family s Quinta da Granja estate on clay/limestone soils were fermented at a low temperature of 12º C to maximize pure fruit qualities and remained on lees for three months to build body and length. [00] M8 D9 ABASTADO GRANDE RESERVA BRANCO, DOC DOURO, 2008, JOSÉ PINHEIRO $18.50 6 BTLS/750 ML $111.00 Portugal continues to plough its own furrow with indigenous grape varieties that distinguish it from other wine-producing countries. The hot, dry climate of the Douro was, until recently, considered too hot to produce quality white wines; however under the right combination of altitude and exposure some fine examples are now emerging. This wine is made from the indigenous Rabigato grown on schist terraces which give very low yields. After limited skin contact, the juice was fermented at low temperatures and the wine aged in French oak for nine months with regular battonage. The fruit and oak are perfectly integrated and the wine has lovely texture with subtle layers of flavour, elegance and a long finish. Wines were sold on the basis of grape variety rather than provenance. That is changing rapidly. Grand Cru terroirs have been defined and producers are seeking to better understand and match grape varieties to specific sites. Cave Vinicole de Hunawihr, based in the heart of the region, and its winemaker Nicolas Garde are fully focussed on this ideal. Riesling grapes are grown by seven selected growers on sites they consider to have the greatest potential to produce great Riesling, but which do not have Grand Cru status.
