PROGRAM 1: Minimally Invasive and Maximally Effective Dentistry: The Oral Systemic Relationship, Understanding CAMBRA, and CAMBRA Treatment Planning and Options Allen Wong, DDS, EdD This continuing dental education course is divided into three 4-hour segments and will be presented over a period of three half-days in conjunction with the travel schedule for this program. Individuals must register for the continuing education portion of this program separately from the travel portion of the trip. The Medical-Dental Connection Over the past decade, scientific research has deepened our understanding of the oral systemic relationship. The 2000 Surgeon General s report emphasized that people need to have oral health in order to have complete health. As a dental team, we have the opportunity to improve our patient s overall health by educating them on these medical relationships. In addition, all dental practices have patients of varying health. The population of patients who are medically compromised and who have special needs is dramatically increasing. We will review the most recent information on treating medically compromised patients and offer suggestions to working with their physicians. We will also explore the new paradigm of dental and medical risk assessment. You will learn: 1. The most recent information from the medical literature on oral systemic connections, including cardiovascular disease, pregnancy complications, diabetes and more 2. Cariology from a medical perspective 3. Medical risk and dental risk assessment considerations, particularly in medically compromised patients Program 2: Caries Management by Risk Assessment (CAMBRA) - Understanding and Incorporating CAMBRA Into Your Practice Interest in Caries Management by Risk Assessment (CAMBRA) is growing worldwide, and the approach is now incorporated in most dental schools curriculum. Caries risk assessment is a new paradigm that focuses on minimally invasive strategies that emphasize oral biofilm, demineralization, and remineralization as key to controlling the caries disease process. 3. How to demystify products and focus on effectiveness 4. How to develop your CAMBRA team Program 3: CAMBRA: Treatment Planning and Treatment Options Once a person is diagnosed with high caries risk, then what? Why do some people get recurrent caries disease and others do not? What is the most appropriate treatment material? The strategies of treatment planning and options will be reviewed. We will emphasize treatment planning for longevity of restorations and using a minimally invasive approach. You will learn: 1. Treatment planning with a strong emphasis on prevention and preservation of tooth structure 2. Rationale of Modified Atraumatic Restorative Technique 3. Reinforcing remineralization strategy in a practical way 4. Proper use of Glass ionomer restorative materials 5. Access to dental care, dental missions, and CAMBRA Dr. Allen Wong is an Associate Professor in the Department of Dental Practice and is the director of hospital dentistry at Pacific. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Special Care Dentistry and has extensive experience in providing dental care to patients with disabling conditions and medical problems. He has staff appointments at several hospitals throughout the San Francisco Bay area including California Pacific Medical Center, Kaiser of San Francisco, Highland Hospital and University of California, San Francisco. A Fellow of the American College of Dentists, Dr. Wong is an 86 Pacific graduate of the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. He also received his doctorate in Professional Education and Leadership from Pacific in 2010. Tuition: Credits: $435 per person (includes all three continuing education programs) This program is designed for 12 units of continuing education credit. University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry is an ADA CERP recognized provider. ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education. ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry. You will learn: 1. The concepts of CAMBRA, testing methods and treatment strategies 2. Evidenced-based literature on minimally invasive approaches.

Glories of China Exploring Shanghai, Guilin, Yangshuo, Xi an, and Beijing 14 Days / 12 Nights October 5-18, 2012

Glories of China Exploring Shanghai, Guilin, Yangshuo, Xi an, and Beijing China is a land of history and refinement unparalleled in the world. Attentive visitors are immersed in a sea of visual and cultural experiences unlike any other they may have had elsewhere. Each geographic area in China teems with its own identity as an energetic variation on the great theme of Chinese civilization. You will be amazed at how regions differ vastly yet express similar values and ideas. This journey begins in Shanghai, China s most populous city and economic powerhouse. The European Bund still retains the glamour of the colonial era; modern western pubs and bars and boutiques scatter all around the center of Shanghai. Visit the traditional Yuyuan Garden and spend some time exploring Shanghai Museum, the best in China. A day excursion to Wuzhen will definitely be a very exciting experience for all participants to learn about and appreciate the rural life and culture in the Yangzi River delta. Flying to Guilin, the south China region of picturesque karsts mountains rising from rice paddies. This is one of the most idyllic landscapes of China, and your cruise down the Li River to Yangshuo will reveal its beauties at each bend of the river. Your exploration in the countryside around the county town of Yangshuo will be both enchanting and memorable. Your itinerary also includes Xi an, once the largest city in the world. Visit and explore the Terracotta Warriors Museum in homage to Qinshihuang. It is considered China s preeminent archaeological discovery.
