It was part of their Kabloom display. I must congratulate Paul Tesselaar and his team for putting on an amazing event. The flowers were absolutely stunning and gave much enjoyment to thousands of people. The colourful displays were unique for our region and will set the standard for floral exhibitions. I suspect they also inspired many to go home and do their own small version. However the garden expo was hit by one of those wet miserable weekends in the middle of a period of beautiful weather. Saturday morning was good but by 1pm the rain came and everyone went home. It is hard to run events in Melbourne as we have no period where we can be 100% sure of not being rained out. There is rain insurance but you need to claim every three or four years to justify it. It is not just the weather but also how the radio reports it. The weather can kill an event and hurt the budget of many vendors especially if it is like this year when it happens several weeks in a row. The bigger issue is the rising power costs. The Victorian Government has come up with a great concept. They have a website for comparing power companies that has been running since the start of the year. The idea is you submit all your details it will suggest what you should be paying and give some ideas of were to go. There weren t enough people visiting so the government is giving every one who logs onto the site a 50 payment. It is expected to cost the tax payer 50million. Seems like a great idea to give away money. They say that there are many people who have not visited the... Continued on page 4

Larkman Nurseries Pty Ltd May 2018 4 Clive s Comments continued...site and could be benefiting by up to 300 per annum. Theory is the 50 will make them go to the website and thus receive 50 and get a 300 saving. Problem is that the bonus only works from July to September. So what will the masses do now? They will wait until July to register and thus loose two months worth of savings 2 x 25 = 50 no net benefit! Sometimes I wonder where they find the people that come up with such great ways of wasting our money. This government loves to legislate to control our lives. They like to ban this, restrict that and mandate the rest. Private retailers were put in place as the powers that be assumed they would compete against each other and drive prices down. Instead the people running these companies came up with such complex systems that no-one consumer or competitor could understand and compare. Stupidity nor conspiracy??? Well here is a solution to power price comparison. It has been many years since supermarkets were made to show unit pricing. This has overridden manufacturers habit of having all these package sizes at varied prices. Now when I am buying on price and not brand I just buy on the unit price (per gram etc) listed on each tag. The problem with the power companies is they can advertise any price and any discount rate which makes it very hard to work out the unit ( per kwh) price. I found that every property in Australia has a set of tariffs related to what power sources are available. These cover; off-peak, shoulder, farm rate etc and control how much you pay. I think they are set by the power wholesalers so they can talk to the retailers. I found out that we are NEE21 and NEE28. Now all I do is ask the company what country they ae based in. (If they are foreign I hang up). Next I ask the net dollar per kilowatt hour for each of these two tariffs. We also have solar power so I ask the for their feed in tariff rate which is government set. From these questions it is easy to determine who is the cheapest. All the government needs to do is legislate that they must advertise their rates as per kilo watt hour for your respective tariff. Would make comparison easy and probably stop the need for all the spam calls as we could just visit their websites, type in the tariffs and get the rates. Not hard! Anyway hope autumn has been good for you. Victorian industry is ticking over well. Di and I are going to China for a large plant conference with a day dedicated to IPPS. I am presenting at the main event and Di at the IPPS one. They expect 100,000 people so could be good.
