Spainish Colonization I. By 1600 Spain had colonized much of the New World II. Spanish colonies sent the mother country great riches III. Many other European na2ons saw the great wealth of Spain and desired riches of their own

Roanoke Island (Lost Colony) I. Sir Walter Raleigh acempted to establish the first English seclement in North America. II. Acempted to secle at Roanoke Island in III. North Carolina Queen Elizabeth I gave Raleigh a charter (a document that allowed colonists to live on land owned by their country.)

Roanoke Island (1st Time) I. In 1585, the first English people tried to begin a colony at Roanoke in North Carolina II. This became the 1 st English colony III. in the USA. It failed due to hunger and bad rela2ons with the Na2ve Americans. IV. All but 15 men went back to England on a ship.

Roanoke Island (2nd Time) I. In 1587, Raleigh sent colonists a second 2me. II. The 15 men that had stayed behind the 1 st 2me had been killed by then. III. John White was the colony s governor. IV. This 2me, the colonist brought their wives and children. V. John White s granddaughter, Virginia Dare was born 1 month aier they arrived in the USA on August 18 the first English baby born in the USA.

Life at Roanoke I. Supplies soon ran low at Roanoke and Governor White decided to return to England for assistance. II. Upon his arrival, Spain acacked England in 1587. A. White was not allowed back to Roanoke B. All English ships had to stay to fight back against the Spanish Armada III. The Spanish Armada acacked and LOST A. The Spanish navy was crippled B. England and France would now lead future coloniza2on efforts in the New World. C. Spain would be lei out of future coloniza2on IV. White was eventually allowed to return to Roanoke AND>>>>>

The Lost Colony I. When White returned in August 1590 he found no colonists on Roanoke Island. II. On one of the trees was wricen CROATOAN. A. The colony had vanished B. No survivors were ever found C. Historians have no idea where the Lost Colony ended up

The Colony at Jamestown I. Following the failure of the English colony at Roanoke, English businessmen once again tried to colonize the new world II. The Virginia Company was created to found a permanent colony in the new world A. The colony was created as a business B. It was intended to make money (find gold, grow crops or collect natural resources)

English Colonization The Charter of the Virginia Company: I. The Virginia Company was created to establish a profitable colony in the Americas A. The whole purpose of an English colony in North America was to get rich (profits) II. A charter was created to give colonist the same rights as Englishmen A. Try to get colonists to leave England for the Americas

Virginia Charter I. In 1606 the Virginia Company of London was granted a charter by James I to colonize the area of Virginia. II. Three English ships sailed up an inlet of the Chesapeake Bay they named James River and settled on James Island founding the settlement of Jamestown with a defensive fort called James Fort. III. The early Jamestown colony had many problems that almost led to its failure.

Jamestown I. On May 14, 1607, the seclers began building the first English permanent seclement on the James River in Virginia. II. Jamestown was named aier the King James I and Virginia was named aier the Virgin Queen of England.

The Jamestown Nightmare I. 1606-1607 àà40 people died on the voyage to the New World. II. 1609 ààanother ship from England lost its leaders and supplies in a shipwreck off Bermuda. III. Jamestown Colony I. The success of Tobacco cultivation and advertisement of the colony in England, Jamestown became the first permanent English settlement in the New World. II. Due to the success of the colony and people spreading onto mainland Virginia, the head of the Virginia company Edwin Sandys allowed the settlers to form their own colonial legislative body called the House of Burgesses (representatives).

Early Colonial Tobacco 1618 Virginia produces 20,000 pounds of tobacco. 1622 Despite losing nearly one-third of its colonists in an Indian attack, Virginia produces 60,000 pounds of tobacco. 1627 Virginia produces 500,000 pounds of tobacco. 1629 Virginia produces 1,500,000 pounds of tobacco.
