How to participate in a Waste Wise Event Fact Sheet 1 For stall holders & food & drink vendors What is Waste Wise? Managing the waste we create at special events like this one, in an environmentally friendly and socially responsible way! Did you know things have changed? Community expectations about waste minimisation are driving change through Council resulting in new regulations for all participants involved in special events. Participants include Council, Event Coordinators, waste contractors, sponsors, visitors and YOU. So what s new? Sydney s inner west Councils now have an: Event Waste Minimisation & Management Policy; and Event Waste Management Plan. Event Coordinators need to outline the types and amounts of materials expected on the day and how they will be managed. All events must be waste wise to meet Council approval. How this affects YOU The Event Coordinator will need your assistance to complete the Waste Management Plan for Council. You will be required to: 1. Communicate with the Event Coordinator or Council. 2. Bring Accepted packaging material only to the event as shown here in the table. 3. Provide a list of the types of material you will be bringing on site. 4. Estimate the approximate quantities of each material type (See Activity Wastes - Summary Sheet p6) What if I don t want to participate? Council and the Event Coordinator require you to comply with these new waste wise guidelines. If you choose not to, you will not be able to register your stall at this event, or possibly in this Council area again. Who can help you? The Event Coordinator is responsible for supplying you with helpful information on alternative packaging and the waste and recycling system on the day (See Fact Sheet 2). How to be waste wise Managing waste wisely includes: Avoiding certain materials like unwanted packaging in setting up your stall but also in on-selling your product to the consumer; Reusing products where possible such as the containers, boxes and bags you ve used to transport food, drink, clothes and other items; and Recycling materials including bulk cardboard, glass and plastics generated at your stall.
