SCENTED, VELVETY & GENEROUS A ONCE-IN-A-DECADE MOMENT CAPTURED IN A BOTTLE FOR YOU thewinesociety.com/beaujolais BCAPR18

THE TOP 10 THE STYLE OF THE 10 BEAUJOLAIS CRUS FROM NORTH TO SOUTH SAINT- AMOUR One of the smallest crus and rarely seen in the UK; the wines tend to be easy-drinking and instantly appealing, but no less serious than their neighbours. CHIROUBLES The cru with the highest altitude and lowest average temperatures, leading to lively, bright, more delicate wines which are approachable early. JULIÉNAS Spicy and fuller-bodied, often more structured and powerful with good ageing potential. MORGON Second only to Moulin-à-Vent for structure and weight; predominantly granite soils produce serious, concentrated wines with plenty of ageing potential. CHÉNAS The smallest of the crus and used to be part of Moulin-à-Vent until its particular character became evident. Generally fuller-bodied, mineral wines with good purity. RÉGNIÉ The youngest and least known of the crus which produces bright, appealing wines for earlier drinking. MOULIN- À-VENT The longest-lived wines which are more on the robust side, often seeing some oak ageing. CÔTE DE On a volcanic hill with vineyards at all points of the compass so can produce wines of different levels of ripeness. In general the wines are ripe with good concentration and bouquet. Pink granite soils here give the wines their floral, aromatic character and silky texture. The most popular cru amongst members. Largest and most southerly of the crus with quite diverse soils and exposures, the best wines are user-friendly, fruit-driven and appealing with a floral edge. SAINT-AMOUR DOMAINE JOSEPH BURRIER, SAINT-AMOUR CÔTE DE BESSET 2016 Perfumed, quaffable cru Beaujolais with plenty of aromatic, cherry-fruit character and lovely plush texture from Burrier s own vineyards. Just a touch of tannin on the finish gives the wine the structure to age beautifully too. The wine for Beaujolais lovers, or just lovers! Now to 2021. 13.5% ref BC-BJ7361 18 BOTTLE 216 DOZEN JULIÉNAS JOSEPH BURRIER JULIÉNAS BEAUVERNAY 2016 From a small, steeply sloping vineyard with a south-west exposure and a top grower, this is a full, rich Beaujolais with lovely, grainy tannins. A notable success in 2016 and the best Juliénas we tried in our extensive tastings. Perfect with coq au vin or raclette. Now to 2021. 14% ref BC-BJ7371 17 BOTTLE 204 DOZEN CHÉNAS NEW STÉPHANE AVIRON CHÉNAS 2016 The likeable and talented Stéphane Aviron s 2016s are characterised by their effortless charm. This Chénas, a new addition to the range, has delicate freshness with a floral bouquet and soft red-fruit character on the palate. Now to 2020. 12.5% ref BC-BJ7311 10.95 BOTTLE 131 DOZEN MOULIN-À-VENT DÉPAGNEUX MOULIN-À-VENT VIEILLES VIGNES, CUVÉE JEAN 2016 An approachable, ripe and succulent wine from one of our oldest suppliers in Beaujolais. Moulin-à-Vent tends to be more structured than the other crus, but this is a generous and approachable wine that displays delicious gamay purity. Excellent value for money and a great all-rounder. Now to 2021. 12.5% ref BC-BJ7501 10.95 BOTTLE 131 DOZEN DOMAINE DU MOULIN D EOLE, MOULIN-À-VENT LES THORINS 2016 Philippe Guérin makes his wines from an impeccably looked-after cellar in the village of Chénas. Going against the modern trend of ageing in barrel, most of his wines are not and as a result have great purity of fruit. Classy, generous Moulin-à-Vent with a succulent and satisfying finish. Now to 2023. 13.5% ref BC-BJ7421 11.95 BOTTLE 143 DOZEN CHÂTEAU DE BEAUREGARD, MOULIN-À-VENT LA SALOMINE 2016 A stunning wine and one of the jewels in the Beauregard crown. The vineyard was planted in 1912 in granite soils over 400m above sea level, giving the wine beautiful minerality and freshness. Delicious now but will repay some time in bottle for the full range of flavours to develop. Now to 2025. 14% ref BC-BJ7391 21 BOTTLE 252 DOZEN

SERENDIPITY! Pure pleasure from the best vintage of the last decade Scented, generous and succulent wines What a stroke of luck! I have taken over buying Beaujolais for The Society just in time for one of the finest vintages in recent memory. To me, Beaujolais is all about scented, generous, velvety wines with seductive texture and freshness: pure pleasure in a glass and all too easy to drink. 2016 delivers all these in spades. The wines are immediately appealing thanks to their perfect, harmonious balance, but they also have the capacity to age for several years. Three mixed cases offer you the chance to discover the diversity of wines from this most entrancing of regions for yourself. Because 2016 is such a classic year producing textbook examples of each style, this is the time to get to know Beaujolais better. Tim Sykes Society Buyer JULIÉNAS SAINT- AMOUR CHÉNAS Last year we offered the excellent 2015 vintage, which received plaudits from wine commentators, journalists and producers, and rightly so. But that vintage produced atypical Beaujolais, with higher alcohol levels and almost Rhône-like character. As a big fan of classically styled Beaujolais I am excited by the wealth of delicious wines to buy from 2016. For the first time for many years we are offering wines from all 10 crus, the named sub-regions offering the finest expressions of the gamay grape and the highest-quality Beaujolais. I have arranged the wines by cru, highlighting the different styles along the way. I couldn t resist squeezing a wine at the end from a maverick producer that, though not a cru, is certainly of cru quality. CHIROUBLES RÉGNIÉ CÔTE DE MORGON MOULIN-À- VENT

TO ORDER CALL 01438 741177 OR VISIT THEWINESOCIETY.COM/BEAUJOLAIS THE SOCIETY S EXHIBITION 2016 We do several crus under our Exhibition label and Fleurie is your favourite, for good reason. A blend of three wines, made in conjunction with Jean-Marc Darbon at Les Vins Aujoux, this is a typically floral, charming expression of the gamay grape at a sensible price. Scented and appealing, and a delightful wine for enjoying with some good cheese and friends! 13% ref BC-BJ7281 9.95 BOTTLE 119 DOZEN DOMAINE COUDERT, CLOS DE LA ROILETTE 2016 From a vineyard bordering Moulin-à-Vent, this wine has the perfume of a Fleurie and the body of a Moulin-à-Vent. Very traditionally made, it is aged in large oak barrels (foudres) and tastes juicy, rich and ripe with seductive sweetness. Beautifully balanced. Now to 2021. 13% ref BC-BJ7331 12.50 BOTTLE 150 DOZEN CHIROUBLES DOMAINE DU MOULIN D EOLE, CHIROUBLES 2016 Cooler vineyards at 350m altitude give a lovely freshness to this delicious bright, silky Beaujolais. Hail devastated much of the crop in Chiroubles in 2016, but the quality of fruit which survived the onslaught was, thankfully, excellent. Drink with ease, this year and next, with a wide variety of dishes. 12.5% ref BC-BJ7411 10.50 BOTTLE 126 DOZEN DOMAINE MONTANGERON, 2016 The Montangeron family have their vines close to the border with Morgon and their Fleurie needs a year in bottle to show at its best. A tiny production this year due to hail, but the quality is outstanding. The fruit was picked early to ensure freshness and balance, resulting in a classic, perfumed Fleurie that is starting to drink well. Lovely with roast chicken. Now to 2021. 13% ref BC-BJ7401 11.50 BOTTLE 138 DOZEN STÉPHANE AVIRON, DOMAINE DE LA MADRIÈRE, LA MADONE VIEILLES VIGNES 2016 From well-sited old vines between 50 and 85 years of age, this is Stéphane Aviron s top Fleurie. The wine has plenty of colour and a perfumed nose of crushed red fruit and a hint of pepper. On the palate the texture is silky, with a pure, mineral finish. Now to 2020. 12.5% ref BC-BJ7301 11.95 BOTTLE 143 DOZEN CLOS DE LA ROILETTE, CUVÉE TARDIVE 2016 From 70 to 80-year-old vines, this cuvée, though lovely now, would benefit from six months more in the bottle, before you drink it, a result of the old vines extra concentration. Dense, succulent Fleurie of exceptional quality. The wines are named after a racehorse (La Roilette) owned by a previous landowner, hence the horse motif on the label! Now to 2022. 13% Low stock. Only available in the A Bouquet of 2016 Fleurie mixed case BC-MX18103 CHÂTEAU DE BEAUREGARD, PONCIÉ 2016 Poncié is one of the most prized vineyards in Fleurie with a southerly exposure overlooking the village. From vines planted in the 1950s, this is fine and floral with the hallmark freshness and lightness of touch of the 2016 vintage. Delightful with a plate of good saucisson. Now to 2020. 12.5% ref BC-BJ7381 14.95 BOTTLE 179 DOZEN MORGON NEW ROBERT DUBUISSON, MORGON 2016 A blend put together with Aujoux s talented winemaker Jean-Marc Darbon, this is a refined, ripe and succulent expression of gamay. Morgons can be quite undemonstrative when young but thanks to the lovely balance of ripe fruit and fresh acidity this 2016 is out of its shell and can be enjoyed straight away. 13% ref BC-BJ7351 9.95 BOTTLE 119 DOZEN NEW JEAN-PAUL BRUN LES PIERRES DORÉES, MORGON 2016 From vines planted some 50 years ago in Jean-Paul Brun s tiny Bellevue vineyard, this is a classic Morgon with a mineral spiciness and the structure to age. Lovely, traditional Morgon from a top-quality vintage. Delicious with a casserole made with wild-boar sausages or earthy mushroom stroganoff. Now to 2020. 12.5% ref BC-BJ7481 13.95 BOTTLE 167 DOZEN

DOMAINE JEAN-MARC BURGAUD, MORGON GRAND CRAS 2016 One of the top producers of the Beaujolais region, Jean-Marc Burgaud makes concentrated yet fine wines which keep well. This is a full, broad wine with plenty of colour and impressive depth of flavour; a complex wine of real class. Now to 2023. 13% ref BC-BJ7531 13.95 BOTTLE 167 DOZEN DOMAINE JEAN-MARC BURGAUD, MORGON CÔTE DU PY 2016 Côte du Py is situated on a plateau on top of a hill where granite predominates rather than the more usual schist soils. This leads to wines which combine controlled power and minerality in an original way, and the overall effect is of intensity and elegance. One of the top wines we tasted from this brilliant vintage. Now to 2024. 13% ref BC-BJ7511 14.95 BOTTLE 179 DOZEN RÉGNIÉ DOMAINE JEAN-MARC BURGAUD, RÉGNIÉ VALLIÈRES 2016 A Wine Society exclusive for well over a decade, Jean-Marc Burgaud s Régnié comes from a tiny, one-hectare vineyard holding. Bottled early to capture the fruity exuberance typical of the cru, this is delightfully pure, approachable and juicy, with succulent texture. Lovely with roast pork or a chard and gruyère tart. Now to 2020. 12.5% ref BC-BJ7521 13.50 BOTTLE 162 DOZEN CÔTE DE THE SOCIETY S EXHIBITION CÔTE DE 2016 This is a delicious selection from two wellrespected producers, one of whom raised the wine in large old wooden barrels, or foudres, the other in concrete tanks. The final blend captures both the freshness of the vintage and the characteristic grip of the cru. A wine of considerable character and excellent value. 13% ref BC-BJ7271 9.95 BOTTLE 119 DOZEN CÔTE DE, TRENEL 2016 Perfumed, friendly gamay with concentration of flavour coming from low-yielding vines. Lovely purity and depth of flavour with a hint of violets on the finish. A failsafe bottle for enjoying with your favourite take-away. Now to 2021. 13% ref BC-BJ7491 10.50 BOTTLE 126 DOZEN CHÂTEAU THIVIN, CÔTE DE LES SEPT VIGNES 2016 Claude Geoffray is the fifth generation of the family to make wine at this historic property. Made from a blend of grapes from seven different plots, the wine displays ripe, dark-fruit character and lovely balance, with a mineral edge on the finish. Now to 2022. 13.5% ref BC-BJ7441 14.50 BOTTLE 174 DOZEN NEW CHÂTEAU THIVIN, CÔTE DE GODEFROY 2016 Made with fruit from 95-year-old vines, this is a beautifully balanced, refined and perfumed wine with intense, brambly fruit flavours on the palate and an exquisitely pure finish. The essence of fine Beaujolais. Now to 2022. 13.5% ref BC-BJ7451 19 BOTTLE 228 DOZEN DOMAINE DES CÔTEAUX DE FONT CURÉ, 2016 We have worked with Beaujolais broker and talented winemaker Jean-Marc Darbon for many years because of his superb local knowledge and this well-priced Brouilly is an excellent addition to our range. From an impossibly steep vineyard, the wine displays refreshing, wild-cherry fruit character and silky texture. Very successful in 2016. 13% ref BC-BJ7461 9.50 BOTTLE 114 DOZEN NEW DOMAINE COUDERT, 2016 Alain Coudert tends to bottle his Brouilly early to preserve the freshness and perfume of the wine. Round and well-balanced, a short stint in old oak barrels has softened and sweetened the tannins nicely. Lovely with spring lamb. Ripe, juicy and satisfying. Now to 2020. 12.5% ref BC-BJ7471 11.95 BOTTLE 143 DOZEN FREE CLICK & COLLECT MINIMUM PURCHASE APPLIES THEWINESOCIETY.COM/COLLECT
