The general advice on suitable alternatives has been provided by qualified Veterinary Surgeons. As far as manufactured products are concerned, many common brands of pet foods contain cereal and are therefore not suitable for esach, but the following more specialist products have been investigated and some found to be chametz free. (They have also been checked for mixtures of Meat and Dairy from which one is similarly prohibited to derive benefit throughout the year.) MICE & RATS Mice and rats are essentially omnivorous and can be given vegetables, small pieces of meat and cheese, dried insects such as mealworms, as well as tiny bits of matza. RABBITS Rabbits will do very well if given plenty of clean fresh hay, supplemented with some green leafy vegetables such as cauliflower leaves, spring greens and/or broccoli, but the new diet must be introduced slowly over many weeks to encourage them to eat it.
