gardens igrow.org DECEMBER 2014 SDSU DEPARTMENT OF PLANT SCIENCE 2014 McCrory Gardens Herbaceous Plant Trials Report David Graper Director of McCrory Gardens & SDSU Extension Horticulture Specialist Chris Schlenker McCrory Gardens Head Gardener The trial and many display beds at McCrory Gardens were utilized to showcase and evaluate about 150 different trial varieties that were sent to us for evaluation this past year. They were primarily planted in the main trial bed adjacent to the All-American Selections trial bed and also in the What s New bed that is located near the Straw Bale House. In many cases they were also utilized in various display beds throughout the gardens, such as in the large containers, bowls, and hanging baskets around the Education and Visitor Center and Terrace Gardens. Most trial plants were grown from seed in the SDSU greenhouse facilities while the rest were supplied as small plants or plugs. All trial plants were eventually transplanted into 606 deep cell packs or 4 pots until the time of transplanting into the gardens. Seeds and plants were provided by the following companies: Ball Floraplant, Ball Ingenuity, Burpee Home Gardens, Kieft Seed, Pan American Seed, Proven Winners, Selecta, and Terra Nova. Planting began during the last week of May but became more intensive during the first two weeks in June. Rainfall was 4.2 above average for the month of May and 2.5 above average for the month of June, often accompanied by cooler than average temperatures with the exception Page 1

of both May and June with average monthly temperatures. July and August weather turned hotter and dryer with higher than average temperatures with 0.9 and.43 less than average rainfall for July and August, respectively. (http://climate.sdstate.edu/climate_site/archive_data.htm) We kept track of the plants over the course of the summer doing our best to observe them about every two weeks and made our primary assessments in September. We also took repeated digital images of plants over the course of the growing season. Sun exposure was assessed, we took note of where plants were growing in the ground (G), in a pot (P) or in a hanging basket (HB), and measured typical plant and flower size. Plants that had multiple flowers in a head or spike were measured for typical flower and head/spike size/length. Plant, flower and overall quality ratings and location where it was growing in the gardens were recorded for each cultivar. It was interesting to compare how some plants performed in our large containers, located around the Education and Visitor Center and other locations throughout the gardens, compared to being planted directly in the soil. Some plants have a definite preference!
