Due to the vastness of the region, Northern Highland Whiskies will have an extreme heathery, spicy character whereas the Southern Highland whiskies tend to be fruitier. Speyside Speyside is the undisputed centre of whisky in Scotland, it boasts the highest concentration of distilleries - more than half of all distilleries in Scotland are found in this region. Speyside whiskies are thought to be the most complex and are known for their sweetness and elegant flavours. Campbeltown This was once the whisky capital of Scotland, now only three Distilleries are currently open. This whisky is peaty, salty with a briny character. Islay and Island Islay whiskies are very strong in both peat and smoke, some people believe that this is because of the regions exposure to high winds and the seas of the West Coast. Lowland Currently there are three distilleries in operation. Lowland whisky comes from the most southern parts of Scotland.
