M A Y 2 0 1 4 the Functional Neurology Newsletter May 1-31 This doctor will help you It s the last month of school for most of us in Texas. We have something for everyone this month: Primitive Reflex testing for Newborns, Toddlers and Infants What is Functional Neurology? Functional Neurology is a fascinating new field that involves a multi-disciplinarian team of scientists, physicians, clinicians and therapists worldwide. We approach health care by addressing networks that involve the brain, gut and immune system. We use neurological testing that involves taste, touch, sight, sound and smell to help us evaluate and manage conditions ranging from Autism to Parkinson s. Dr. Rosenthal is a Doctor of Chiropractic & Board Certified Functional Neurologist practicing in North Dallas. Contact 214-350-9777. FUNCTIONAL NEUROLOGY NEWSLETTER Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or doct ou s i h T y help will ALS is a devastating progressive neurodegenerative disease which destroys the ability to walk, speak, eat and breathe. History of Lou Gehrig s ALS was first recognized as a disease in 1869, by JeanMartin Charcot, a French Neurologist. However, ALS is sometimes referred as Lou Gehrig's disease; named after Lou Gehrig, a famous baseball first basemen, whose career was stopped in 1939 when he developed ALS at the age of 36. At that time, ALS was given widespread public attention due to the high profile of this baseball player. Raising Awareness ALS affects the body by attacking motor neurons (nerve cells) of the brain and spinal cord. Motor neurons are cells which process and transmit signals which help to control muscles. Destruction of motor neuron cells...leads to symptoms related to loss of muscle control. Typical symptoms of ALS include the inability to walk, speak, eat and even breathe. As ALS is a progressive disease, more motor neurons are destroyed overtime worsening the symptoms. Difficulty breathing and swallowing are later symptoms; paralysis can also develop. 30,000 in the US are affected... The ALS Across America was established in 2008 to help support research for ALS. Find an event near you on their website http://www.als.org. Functional neurology may be able to support those with ALS by giving practical brain-based & immune strategies. Research shows that gluten free diets may decrease some of the symptomatology associated with ALS. www.whathealth.com/awareness/event/alsawarenessmonth.html 2

FUNCTIONAL NEUROLOGY NEWSLETTER Spinal Health Week May 19-25 (Australia) The Nervous System The brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves are controlled by receptors from the environment. Each receptor has a potential for specific input. The eye for vision, the tongue for taste, the ears for hearing. These receptors form networks that talk to each other. When networks don t communicate, the system is inefficient. Posture Bring your family and friends with you You improve your posture by getting the proper input to the proper receptors (at the right time). Standing up straight doesn t improve your posture. The muscles that are responsible for posture are non-volitional (not under a person s control). The tone of each postural muscle is set by the efficiency of the communicating receptors in their network. Brain maps The brain maps the body like a GPS maps the road. When the brain map matches the body map, posture is efficient. When the maps don t match: posture is poor. Steps to Improve Posture 1) Visit your functional neurologist to find out the cause of poor posture for you and your family. 2) Body weight exercises like planking, pull-ups, push-ups, yoga, and tai chi improve input to your brain maps (GPS). 3) Balancing on one leg and walking backwards improves the communicating networks. 3

FUNCTIONAL NEUROLOGY NEWSLETTER Simple Detoxification Why Coffee Enemas Work The coffee enema is used in aiding the liver in its processing of toxins, as well as aiding the colon in its activities of elimination. The efficient removal of metabolic waste and toxins through the colon is vital to the maintenance of health and the prevention of illness. Caffeine, theophylline and theobromine combine to stimulate the relaxation of smooth muscles causing dilatation of blood vessels and bile ducts. The effects of having a coffee enema are not the same as drinking coffee. Caffeine is absorbed more quickly (and in higher concentration) than it is in when coffee is taken orally. Bring your babies to this doctor. To He will find help out you more Http://www.DavidRosenthalDC.com/links Benefits of the Coffee Enema The enzymes in coffee, known as palmitates, help the liver carry away the toxins in bile. The coffee is absorbed into the hemorrhoidal vein, then taken up to the liver by the hepatic portal vein. With the bile ducts dilated, bile carries toxins away to the gastro-intestinal tract. Simultaneously, peristaltic activity is encouraged because of the flooding of the lower colon. Thus, when the colon is evacuated, the toxins and bile are carried out of the body. The coffee enema may be performed at any time that is convenient for you. It will usually take from 15-45 minutes, depending on the person. It is best to choose a time period when you will be undisturbed and not feel rushed. Detoxification using coffee enemas is very inexpensive. What You Need Coffee Should be organically grown. Commercial coffees are often times loaded with herbicides and pesticides. Don t use instant or decaffeinated coffees. The caffeinated coffee will emulsify fat and detoxify the liver. Enema Bag Any bag or bucket designed for enema usage is acceptable. Enema buckets have a permanently open wide mouth at one end, allowing for the easy addition of liquid, whereas those of the hot water bottle variety require constant sealing and unsealing for their use. I have found the enema bag convenient, easy to use, and

FUNCTIONAL NEUROLOGY NEWSLETTER Health Tips for May: 1) Avoid fake sugars like aspartame, sucralose and other man-made sweeteners. You will be hungrier and eat more. Use honey, molasses or maple syrup instead. 2) Avoid plastics. Use glass or stainless steel to store food and beverages. Plastics have been found to be a significant hormone disrupter in humans. A great way to detoxify plastics is by using a FIR (far infrared sauna). Call us to check open appointments. 3) Avoid the color red when you are angry or stressed. Your fight or flight system will be put on high alert. To decrease that stress look at the colors blue, indigo and violet.
