1 About TIFR The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research was founded in June 1945 by the trustees of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust in cooperation with the then Government of Bombay. The initiative to set up such an institute was taken by the late Dr. H.J. Bhabha, FRS in 1943. The Institute is the National Centre of the Government of India for Nuclear Science and Mathematics. The Institute is a Public Trust registered under the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950. Under a tripartite agreement between the Government of India, Government of Maharashtra and the Trustees of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, rules have been framed for the administration and management of the Institute. There is a council of management consisting of 8 members including the Chairman, three members appointed by the Government of India, two members appointed by the trustees of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, one member from the Goverment of Maharashtra, a Co-opted member and the Director of the Institute (ex-officio member). The major portion of the expenditure of the Institute is borne by the Government of India. The Institute comes under the administrative purview of the Department of Atomic Energy through which these grants are channelled. TIFR has a total staff of about 1800. The work of the Institute is carried on in three schools : 2 School of Mathematics School of Mathematics School of Natural Sciences School of Technology and Computer Science. The activities of the School of Mathematics centre around the lectures and seminars conducted by members of the school, supplemented by lectures given by eminent visiting mathematicians from all over the world. The group is engaged in active research in almost every major branch of pure mathematics. There is a collaborative programme in applications of mathematics with Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore started in 1973-74. 3

3 The Environment The Institute in many aspects, reflects the personality of its founder. Dr. Homi J. Bhabha was deeply interested in Science and his greatest intellectual achievements were scientific. The prime objective and characteristic of the institute is, no doubt, scientific research, but Dr. Bhabha was also interested in many other facts which make up a complete life like music, architecture, painting and sculpture, landscapes, gardens, trees and flowers, international friendship and the application of science for the benefit of society. His interest in each of these was deep and he gave practical shape to these interests. This can be seen reflected in the Institute. 4 General Information for Visitors 1. Please note that Navy Nagar in which TIFR is situated has been declared a Prohibited Area by the Indian Navy. The Naval Police insist that visitors to the TIFR are allowed only on the Homi Bhabha Road which leads to the TIFR from St. John s Church (known as Afghan Church).
