The presence of three lines of hills along the right side of the Dordogne and Gironde rivers made that this wine area is dubbed the small Switzerland of Bordeaux. So that the fraction of Puybarbe is perched on the top of one of these hills offering a beautiful panorama over the northern part of Bordeaux. This clay and limestone relief is deeply appreciated for its exposure and the quality of its soils that help the natural drain. The resuilting wines are rich, complex with a good structure and very soft tannins. The property covers 33 ha planted with the traditional Bordeaux grape varieties such as merlot (2/3) and cabernet sauvignon (1/3). The average age of the vines is upper 30 years. The Chateau Puybarbe vineyard is associated to generous slops being an important element in the definition of a quality terroir. As everything is starting in the vineyard, it has been decided to follow a specific planting policy that is giving the possibility to obtain a density of 5000 vines/ha and to apply a wine growing process called raisonné. This allows the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon vines to totally express their quality and potential. The Merlot gives roundness and softness to the wine. Instead the Cabernet Sauvignon gives the structure and the aromatical finesse. Looking always for a constant quality the yields are voluntarily limited to 50 Hl/Ha. Chateau Puybarbe elaborates 3 cuvee featuring their own style : Prestige (fine selective wine), Tradition(with discrete wooden aromas) and Classique(to drink on the fruit).
Chateau Puybarbe Chateau Puybarbe 2012, Côtes de Bourg, Cuvée Prestige Two thirds merlot and one third cabernet sauvignon Gorgeous wine, smooth and round and full of interest Toasty, oaky, dark fruit nose. Good concentration of fruit. Initially supple but with firm tannins kicking in on the mid-palate, which shows a lot of spice there is enough structure to last for at least eight to ten years, but it is already very agreeable Drink 2014-2022 Alc: 13%. The producer limit their yields here to 50 hl/h which is fairly low for a typical Cotes wine, and do a lot of manual work in the vines ensuring there is a small number of grapes per bunch and that shoots are regularly trimmed away. All good signs of a vineyard that cares about quality.
