Tomatillos and Ground Cherries Note: Aunt Molly's Ground Cherry Grande Rio Verde Tomatillo Green/Verde Tomatillo Purple Tomatillo Tamayo Tomatillo Tomatillos and ground cherries seem to do better when there are 2 plants, perhaps because this increases opportunities for cross pollination; in addition, it's good to plant flowering companion plants with them to attract more bees. Also, store tomatillos and ground cherries in the refrigerator with the husk on if not using immediately. Sweet golden ground cherry used for preserves, pies, over ice cream, in smoothies, or in fresh fruit salads. Fruits are produced in a papery husk that turns brown when the fruits ripen but does not split like a tomatillo husk. Often, they'll fall off the plant when ripe, and can be harvested from the ground around the plants - that's why they're called "ground cherries." Can be stored 3-4 weeks in the 70 days 1/2-3/4 in. husk. Sprawling, productive plants. 90 days 3 oz. 70 days 2-3 oz. 70 days 2-3 oz. 65-70 days 2.5-3 in. Heavy yielding plant produces large, yellow-green tomatillos for salsa verde; papery husk will split as it ripens - fully ripe when the fruit falls from the plant - pick earlier for tangier flavor. Popular in salsa or picante recipes, excellent grilled before adding to salsas. For best flavor, harvest when fruits are green, before they turn yellow. Remove the thin husk before using. Tart, lemony flavor. Deep purple, sweet and tart - sweeter than green tomatillos, delicious eaten fresh off the plant, colorful in recipes. Plant leaves have purple veins; husks are light green to buff; husk splits open when tomatillo is ripe and ready to harvest; tomatillos become more purple after harvest and husk removal. Tall, vigorous plants produce abundant green, husk covered fruit. These tomatillos are very large and carried on sturdy plants; have above average shelf life (2-4 wks. in fridge); harvest when paper husks split. Sweet-tart, juicy, crunchy fruit is great for salsa, Mexican recipes. Heirloom, Tomato Companions: tomatoes reach a certain height and stop growing. The plant is compact and manageable. Most fruit is borne over 4 to 6 weeks. tomatoes continue to grow and flower throughout the season, so they grow longer vines and need more support. They have less mature fruit at any one time. Asparagus, basil, beans (? some say yes, some say no), bee balm (monarda), borage, carrots, celery, chives, cucumber, garlic, onions, oregano, peas, lettuce, spinach, arugula, marigold, mint, nasturtium, parsley, calendula, sage, thyme. are said to dislike corn, kohlrabi, potatoes, cole crops, mature dill, fennel. 6 N- Nematodes
