An Introduction to Spanish Wines I Drink when I have occasion, and sometimes when I have no occasion Miguel De Cervantes, Don Quixote Spain has produced wines for over 3000 years, starting with the Phoenicians and further developed by the Romans. Modern Spanish wines compete with the best in the world. Grapes are grown in a variety of landscapes and climatic conditions, ranging from semi-arid & hot southern regions, to wet northern ones, while in the vast central plains vines have adapted to extremes of climate. The cool Atlantic coastline of the North West, the Mediterranean climate of Catalonia, and the dry arid plains of Central Spain are, worlds apart. As far as types of wines are concerned, Spain produces many varieties, from the generous dry, to extremely sweet, through to the sparkling wines, the rosés and the oak aged reservas and grand reservas. There is a Spanish wine for every occasion and every type of meal. Our wines have been selected through vigorous personal tastings and visits to many of the vineyards over the past 20 years. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do. So let us raise a glass to the new wave of Spanish wines and winemakers. We could suggest a Galician Albarino, or perhaps a red Rioja, or a rosé from Navarra, a Cava from Catalonia, a Priorato or Ribero del Duero. Or possibly a Fino or Manzanilla, or...enjoy!

Bodegas Naia Verdejo 2012 (Verdejo) (13%) 20.45 Rueda Very ripe, concentrated soft fruit on the front palate. Delicately perky, exceptionally fine, with lots of subtle secondary flavours. Posh and stunning stuff from one of Rueda's star producers! Finca Constancia Parcela 52 Verdejo 2011 (13%) 19.45 Vinos de Tierra de Castilla y Léon After its first vintage in 2011, this wine is already a huge success in Spain. This 100% Verdejo has a touch of oak, but it is handled well and quite subtle. The nose is filled with herbs, citrus fruit and melon aromas. The palate is clean and fresh with a long and intense finish. Stunning! Vinas Del Vero Chardonnay Colección 2007/8 (13.5%) 18.45 Somontano A golden yellow colour with a wide range of aromas including butter, peach and exotic fruits all in perfect harmony. A rich creaminess to this wine balanced with the oak tones. Cordillera Chardonnay 2011 (13.5%) 19.95 Limari Valley Chile Barrel fermented Chardonnay, fresh & fruity aroma with hints of peach, white plum & grapefruit. An elegant acidity with rich fruity long-lasting aromas & a fresh, pleasant aftertaste. Pazo de Monterrey Godello 2012 (13.5%) 18.95 Monterrey A crisp aromatic & sophisticated wine from the Godello grape, now emerging outside of Spain as a new discovery. Fresh acidity with hints of pear drops, apricots and citric tones from the intriguing Monterrey region in Galicia on the Atlantic North West coast. It is an aromatic wine; floral, enveloping, persistent, and rich in sensations. On the palate silky and velvety, with hints of roses and flowers and a slight spicy touch. Finca de Arantei Albariño 2012 (12.5%) 20.45 Rías Baixas Beautifully aromatic with hints of citrus, sherbet and peach on the nose which lead through to a refreshingly mineral, broad and savoury palate. This vintage is lush in style, with ripe, red fruit balanced with dry fruit characters. A deliciously well balanced wine. Vinas Del Vero Pinot Noir Colección 2011 (12.5%) 20.75 Somontano A ruby red colour and brilliant shine. Aromas of flowers and light herbs on the nose. This is a delicate and soft wine on the palate, well balanced, with a persistent and velvety after taste. Juan Gil Petit Verdot 2010/11 (14%) 18.95 Jumilla Dense, vibrant and youthful in appearance. Beautifully perfumed, with violets, cherries, red berries and gentle vanilla. The palate has a fresh burst of blackcurrant followed by a delicious ripe blueberry character.

Creamy vanilla oak and herb characters also show. Full-bodied and harmonious, this wine is soft and supple with a long pleasing finish. Juan Gil Silver Label 2011 (100% Monastrell) (15%) 22.95 Jumilla intense black fruit aromas and complex smoky tobacco flavours laced with a chocolate and coffee sweetness. On the palate, juicy ripe plum and plenty of acidity to make this a very elegant wine with great balance. Cordillera Carignan 2008/9 (14%) 21.45 Maule Valley Chile On the nose, fresh with black fruits. Jammy & silky on the palate, complex, earthy, a bit of spice, and hints of blackcurrant and licorice with a surprising intensity yet a silky body. Superb! Gran Coronas Reserva 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon/Tempranillo (14%) 20.45 Penedes Dark garnet in colour, nose of spice, dark fruit and oak. Very drinkable and extremely quaffable. Medium-bodied with a superb balance of dark fruits, ripe tannins and spice. Real Sitio de Ventosilla Prado Rey Roble 2010/11 (Tempranillo : Cab Sauv : Merlot) (13.5%) 28.45 Ribera del Duero A well rounded, hearty and fruity palate with a hint of spice and firm tannins, offering a long, pleasant finish. The nose shows complex aromas of ripe red fruit, coffee beans & vanilla. Berola 2009 Garnacha/Syrah 2009 (14.5%) 22.95 Campo de Borja Another exceptional wine from Bodegas Borsao! A rich aromatic complexity of black fruits: warm and dense with softly persistent tannins. Celeste 2010 Tinto Fino (Crianza) (14%) 21.45 Ribera de Duero Fresh fruit with some spice; in the mouth the wine is lighter than you might expect, more medium in body for a full-flavoured red; on the palate, red fruit flavours, cherry, currants, hints of liquorice, with a bit of peppery spice. Very smooth and elegant. Finca Constancia Parcela 12 Graciano 2011 (14%) 19.45 Vinos de Tierra de Castilla y Léon A new and exciting wine from the Finca. An experimental plot of Graciano with extended maturation in new French oak. A powerful and expressive wine, full of concentrated black fruits and spice with surprising elegance and a velvety texture.

Very ripe, fine tannins allow the sweet, juicy fruit to dominate. Deep and moody yet capturing a brightness remarkable for such a complex wine. Torres Mas la Plana Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 (13.5%) 36.95 Penedes Wonderfully intense bouquet typical of this single estate vineyard: hints of cranberries, cherries and truffles, with an incense-like quality. Full, elegant and pronounced after taste, befitting a wine of this quality. Rioja Beronia Crianza Rioja 2009 (Tempranillo: Garnacha: Graciano) (13%) 4.50 5.75 16.95 Ruby red with bluish tones. A vanilla aroma over wild fruits, raspberry, blackberry and a touch of cherry, with hints of toasted bread. Well structured, with spice and liquorice flavours remaining. Smooth and gentle on the palate, with shades of ripened fruits combined with dark roasts spices and a hint of liquorice. Beronia Gran Reserva Rioja 2005 (Tempranillo: Mazuelo: Graciano) (13%) 25.45 A fine and elegant bouquet, with certain toasted aromas of balsamic and sweet fruit that develop with aeration. Smooth and velvety on the palate, with a good balance between ripe fruit and wood. Valencisco Reserva Rioja 2006 Tempranillo Rioja (14.5%) 25.95 Valencisco wines are beautifully understated and elegant. Brandies & Liqueurs Few would dispute that Spanish Brandies are equal to any distilled spirit in the world. They come from two areas: In the Sherry triangle of South West Spain and the Penedes region close to Barcelona. Jerez brandies are produced in column stills by the traditional Sherry Houses, with ageing in Sherry butts (barrels) using the Solera system of blending from different years. Depending on the length of ageing, the Brandy is called Solera (min. age 6 months), Solera Reserva (min. age 1 year), or Solera Gran Reserva (min. age 3 years), although this is only the age of the youngest brandy in the blend: many Gran Reservas, for example, are aged for a minimum of 10-12 years, and a fraction of the blend can include soleras as old as 100 years! The solera creates a brandy that superbly balances oak ageing with a caramel/toffee sweetness.
