Records and Tapes The high-quality sound of CDs and ipods wasn t always around. In 1930, records and record players went on the market, but they were very costly. Records were originally made of wax, and wax was soon replaced with vinyl for better sound quality. The sound came from bumps in the grooves of the wax or vinyl. Players came complete with a turntable to spin the record, and an arm with a needle was attached near the turntable. The needle had to go through the grooves to play the recording. Unfortunately, records were easily scratched by the needle. Records were also destroyed by heat because vinyl and wax can melt. Cassette tapes were introduced in the 1960s and became a popular way to listen by the 1980s. People didn t have to be as careful with tapes, and the sound quality was better. Music was recorded on a magnetic reel of tape and placed in a small plastic case. A tape was read by a cassette player from the opening at the bottom of the tape.
However, many players had a bad habit of eating the precious reel and ruining the tape. To try to keep this from happening, most people cleaned their cassette players with Q- tips dipped in rubbing alcohol. 17. This passage would most likely be found in a book titled A.
