Dear Cattlemen, This year seemed to go by faster than ever before. I feel that the bulls and heifers are yet again a little better than last year s. The consistency and uniformity of the herd has grown to the point where it is getting difficult to pick out the top bull calves. With our current herd size, we cut almost 60% this year. We also have some great embryo calves out of our two donors. The purebred set is out of a SRS Preferred Beef cow that has proven herself as a top producer after being bred to 7 different sires ratioing 101 at birth and 102 at weaning. The half blood embryos are out of a super ER Black Cisco cow who ratioed 108 at birth and 104 at weaning. We are also offering three great 2 year old bulls that were too young for last year s cutoff, but too good not to be left as bulls. They were fed 5 lbs of pellets a day by hand and free choice hay until mid march and then turned out to pasture. In November they were brought back in and put on a hay only ration. We have slowly been adding a few fall calving cows and will increase this to around 50 head in the future to raise 18 month old bulls for the sale. Until then, we will probably continue to keep some outstanding young bulls over as 2 year olds Here at Prickly Pear we strive for longevity in our bulls. I have developed a program based on a 3lb per day gain so the bulls develop at a nice easy pace to insure lots of years of work. The ration is based on 3 percent of their body weight; starting with 5lbs of grain for the first 30 days and increasing to 10lbs a day the last 30 days with 120 days total on test. The week of the sale I back them down to 6lbs a day where they stay until we deliver them. Again this year the RC Club King sired calves are some of the heaviest on test. The MCM Top Grade bulls just seemed to be getting better and better as the test continued. The SAV Homesteader bulls are true feed efficient cattle that just gain on little input and the Sitz Emblazon 9598 bulls are again very good. We use our new herd sires extensively as a yearling, then back off as a two year old until we see how their progeny performs. Our Ellingson Blazer X37 bull has really impressed us. Although you don t see many of his calves in this sale he has about 50 on the way for next year. Remember we will have updated data, sale order, scrotal and ultrasound results available on a supplement sheet. RETAINED SEMEN INTEREST The bull buyer will receive full possession, 100% salvage value, and 2/3 semen interest of any bull purchased in this sale (unless otherwise noted). This means we are retaining a 1/3 semen interest in these bulls. This semen interest is a royalty interest that entitles Prickly Pear Simmental Ranch to 1/3 of the revenues of any semen sold. PPSR semen interest remains even if the bull or any interest in the bull is sold to a third party. It is the buyer s responsibility to ensure that PPSR s interest is upheld if semen is ever sold. The buyer must also inform any third party of PPSR s interest if the bull is ever sold. PPSR will not be responsible for expense related to semen collection or promotion of any bull purchased, unless a mutual agreement is reached prior to semen collection or promotion. Our retained semen interest also includes the right to collect semen on the bull at our expense and the buyer s convenience. ACTUAL SCROTAL MEASUREMENTS We do not believe in adjusted yearling scrotal measurements, therefore, all scrotal measurements are actual figures. Actual measurements will be taken on January 15, 2014. All bulls under 30 centimeters will be sifted regardless of age. The bull s testicular size is an early indicator of puberty, which is passed on to their sons and daughters. Bulls with larger testicles service more cows and produce more semen, plus their daughter s cycle at an earlier age and have a higher conception rate. All bulls are measured, palpated and fertility tested by Dr. Deidre Loendorf-Ask,DVM prior to sale. The scrotal measurements will be on a supplement sheet along with the carcass data. Most testicular growth occurs from nine to twelve month of age. Remember to consider the age of the calf on January 15 when using these measurements. SUGGESTED MANAGEMENT GUIDELINES FOR YEARLING BULLS We are believers in the use of yearling bulls and feel it is one of the best years of their lives. It s a time when the bulls are easy to manage and their only concern is breeding cows. We have found that yearling bulls that are managed carefully during the second year of their lives not only do well, but they will also perform better over time. Below are some suggested guidelines for the care of yearling bulls: 1. Upon delivery to your ranch, keep yearling bulls separate from older bulls. Feed the yearling bulls a maintenance ration of 5-8 lbs. per head of grain and free choice hay. Reduce grain feed gradually so they are on straight hay or grass 2-4 weeks prior to breeding season. 2. When possible, try to limit the bulls to 45-60 days of pasture service the first year. At this time, or as soon as possible, remove the bulls to put them in separate pastures with plenty of good, quality grass. 3. It is best to feed yearling bulls separate from older bulls until after their second breeding season. This allowes them to achieve the growth and strength necessary to compete with older bulls for feed and space. You will see the benefits of a litttle added cost and care of feeding a yearling bull by probably two or three more years of service from a well managed and healthy bull. QUICK GUIDE TO ASA AND $ INDEXES Expected Progeny Differences (): are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using, the difference between two sires represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have of +10 and 5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull s rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score. $ Indexes: Though allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That s where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend and economics to estimate an animal s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a+50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed.
