Researcher: Gary hastagner and Annie DeBauw Date: 2/9/2015 Project Title: BT114; IR4 Efficacy of Foliar Fungicides to ontrol Botrytis on oral Sunset Protocol #: 14001 PRnumbers: 32070, 31355, 31935, 31522, 31534, 32071, Narrative Summary (Results/Discussion) A total of 15 products were evaluated for their effectiveness in controlling Botrytis spp. on containergrown oral Sunset peonies. Very little disease developed on the plants during this trial. Initial isolations taken from diseased plant material on April 23, 2014 confirmed the presence of B. cinerea and a newly identified species (G3PDH) which is similar to B. calthae. Isolations taken on October 29, 2014 confirmed the presence of Botrytis as well as other pathogens such as ladosporium, Rhizoctonia and Alternaria. Although average disease severity ranged from 0.8 to 5.0, there was considerable variability within the data and none of the treatments affected disease development (Table 2). Based on overall quality ratings, none of the fungicides delayed senescence of the plants compared to the nontreated checks (Table 2). Badge X2, Pageant, Mural, Medallion and both SP numbered products had significantly higher residue ratings than nontreated checks (Table 2). No phytotoxicity was observed in this trial. Plot Layout

Researcher: Gary hastagner and Annie DeBauw Date: 2/9/2015 Project Title: BT114; IR4 Efficacy of Foliar Fungicides to ontrol Botrytis on oral Sunset Protocol #: 14001 PRnumbers: 32070, 31355, 31935, 31522, 31534, 32071, Experiment Information Experimental Design: Randomized omplete Block Number of Reps: 5 Materials & Methods/Recordkeeping Peonies used in this trial were planted in 5 gallon pots in the fall of October, 2013. Plants were blocked based on their height at the start of the trial. They were arranged in a container nursery area in rows that were spaced 4 feet apart with pots spaced 36 apart within rows. The plants were overhead irrigated during the growing season. Treatments initially started on April 18, 2014 and were applied on 7, 14, and 21 day intervals (Table 1). Treatments were delayed starting midjune due to the onset of very warm and dry weather that did not favor disease development. Plants were fertilized on June 9 and July 29, 2014 with 150 ppm of Peter s Professional 201020 water soluble fertilizer. On August 8, 2014 the plants were topdressed with Apex 16611 NPK MAX at a rate of 30 g/pot. The treatments were resumed on August 28, 2014. All treatments were applied in the equivalent of 100 gallons of water and the foliage on plants were sprayed to wet. Each plant received approximately 70.5 ml solution at each application. On August 29, 2014 the plants were inoculated with a spore suspension of and Botrytis paeoniae. Periodically during the growing season, disease development was assessed by rating disease severity on a 0 to 10 scale, where 0 = no disease and 10 = 91 to 100% of the foliage was diseased. Isolations were also done from randomly selected symptomatic samples to determine the cause of the leaf spots at the onset of the trial and at the end of the trial. Overall plant quality was also rated on a scale of 15 where 1 = dead foliage, 2 = yellow foliage, 3 = yellow/green foliage, 4 = mostly green foliage, and 5 = excellent plants with green foliage at the end of the trial to determine if any of the treatments affected the rate of plant senescence. Fungicide residue was rated on a scale of 0 to 3 where 0 = no residue, 1 = slight, 2 = moderate, and 3 = severe residue on foliage.
