welcome... Noel Young Wines Welcome to our first Newsletter of the year; we are featuring our 2005 Rhone En Primeur campaign and also what remains of our 2005 Burgundy En Primeur. 2005 is a sensational vintage for both areas: the Rhone 2005 s are absolutely stunning please be sure to check the website www. nywines.co.uk to see what is still available and to check for new offerings as several wineries had not fixed their prices or done an offer as yet. Burgundy 2005 has been hugely hyped though with good justification as it is a stunning vintage for both white and red wines. The fight for allocations of the top wines has been mad and they are pretty much all gone. However, what remains are some fabulous and well-priced village wines from the Maconnais, Chablis and the Chalonnais there are some stunning wines and great value to be had. The wines have a wonderful focus and purity with lovely fruit and good acidity. Some of the Bourgogne Rouge, Macon s, straight Chablis and Rully s are fabulous quality and 200 does not look to be anywhere as good.! We have tasted some delicious new wines from New Zealand recently, and for the fourth year running we are promoting the Air New Zealand Wine Awards with Mixed Cases to highlight the Trophy and Gold Medal Winners. On the back of this we also have a large range of varietal Packs to highlight the superb quality and diversity found in New Zealand currently. On top of this we have our regular Mixed Case offerings which also feature some stunning new releases. January to March is the tasting season for us in the trade, and whilst it is pretty arduous, I taste some 3-4000 wines in this period, so look for a feast of new wines and vintages appearing! I was briefly in Australia over the New Year to blend m Magpie Estate wines, and we have made some great 2005 s including the first super premium The Malcolm Shiraz for years. 2005 is really a top vintage. I also blended the 200 s to go back into oak, and whilst not quite in the same league as 2005, there will be some very smart wines. Sadly 2007 is still in the midst of a drought and harvest is well under way earlier than ever! As ever, I hope you find something of interest in our offering, All the best Noel noel young wines 5 High Street, Trumpington, Cambridge CB2 9LS UK Tel: 023 5744 Email: admin@nywines.co.uk

Noel Young Wines Burgundy 2005 En Primeur 2005 is a great vintage make no mistake. As Jean Marie Fourrier said, if you cannot make good wine in 2005 then do something else!. Perfect conditions pretty much throughout, Some hail in several appellations affected the size of the crop, but otherwise pretty much perfect. As many growers told me it just required patience to let the fruit ripen to full flavour ripeness. After plentiful spring rains, Summer was dry and hot with cool nights giving the fruit lots of time to ripen fully. The bunches were small giving concentrated flavours and fresh balancing acidity is also a hallmark to balance the concentration. Very few wines needed chaptilising so the result is whites that have great fruit weight, yet show real terroir. Acidity is fresh and the wines have a terrific purity and depth. Reds similarly have good colour and concentrated fruit, tannins are ripe and again good acidity keeps the wines fresh and vibrant and the unique terroirs express themselves fully. In all i think this is a hugely succesfull vintage with many great wines that look to have great aging potential. The Cote d Or is an undoubted success but so is Chablis, the Maconnais and Chalonnais. There are some great values, with so much good fruit the good growers have been able to select the best fruit for the top wines and this means many of the lesser wines have had lots of declassified fruit added and these look really strong. Demand is undoubtedly very high so please act quickly. We have allocations in place with many of the wines, but things are moving quickly and we cannot guarantee orders until we get an official allocation. Wines will be delivered to us throughout 2007, with many of the top wines not being shipped until late Autumn. We will update the website regularly. Updated fully 18/02 many of the top wines have sadly sold out, but some cracking wines remain. Please feel free to contact us for specific recommendations. This is a big list and we are happy to help you trawl through this. All wines are priced per case of x75cl unless stated, EXCLUDING duty, VAT and delivery. Please be aware that ALL orders will be treated as a request for an allocation. We will confirm as soon as possible, and we will ONLY CHARGE YOU when we have been invoiced so as to guarantee stocks. Comte Armand/Clos des Epeneaux Pommard Often quite fearsome, tannic wines, these were most impressive. Now totally biodynamic. Benjamin Leroux is a thoughtful and passionate winemaker. The 2 Auxey-Duresses wines are seriously good, the white full of honeyed stone fruits, nutty, creamy and long, while the red is a tighter style with good weight and structure. The Pommard had not been blended when I was tasting, but the components show this to have massive potential. Auxey-Duresses Blanc Comte Armand 2005 Auxey-Duresses Rouge Comte Armand 2005 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux Comte Arnaud 2005 151.00 170.00 457.00 Domaine Ballot-Millot Meursault This was a great visit with some surprisingly delicious reds as well as the expected great whites. Young Charles Ballot, 2, is clearly a star winemaker with great vineyards and definately a name to watch. They have vineyard holdings in some of the best areas, and the vines range from 20-0 years of age. All wines are barrel-fermented and see about 25% new oak. Meursault Domaine Ballot-Millot 2005 This is very impressive with honeyed stone fruits on the nose, and a lovely creamy texture with hazelnut and good acidity. Meursault Les Criots Domaine Ballot-Millot 2005 Excellent wine; limey, fresh acidity alongside the honeyed, nutty palate. Meursault Les Narvaux Domaine Ballot-Millot 2005 Minerally and honeyed with lovely white peach and a long finish. Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes Domaine Ballot-Millot 2005 Surprisingly elegant with delicious fruit, acidity and minerals - very long. Meursault 1er Cru Perrieres Domaine Ballot-Millot 2005 This is richer than the Charmes with more honey and hazelnut that builds to a fabulously long finish. 178.00 197.00 197.00 320.00 320.00 4 Noel Young Wines Newsletter February - March 2007

Meursault 1er Cru Genevrieres Domaine Ballot-Millot 2005 This was my favourite - just! More acidity, tighter and more complex it will be the longest liver of the three, though it s really just splitting hairs! Meursault Rouge Domaine Ballot-Millot 2005 Light and perfumed with lovely strawberry fruit, fresh with good weight. Volnay 1er Cru Santenots Domaine Ballot-Millot 2005 Again perfumed with black cherry and some oak, lighter on the palate with strawberry and cherry fruit and soft tannins. Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds Domaine Ballot-Millot 2005 Bigger and fuller though still medium-bodied, juicy and very appealing. Pommard 1er Cru Charmots Domaine Ballot-Millot 2000 Pale yet lovely and meaty in style, with a long creamy, toasty finish. Pommard 1er Cru Pezerolle Domaine Ballot-Millot 2005 More perfume and sweet fruit with fine acidity and a very long finish. 325.00 155.00 229.00 250.00 252.00 274.00 Daniel Barraud Maconnais One of my favourite producers, and if not the top, then one of the very best wineries in the Maconnais. I have yet to taste these but they have been getting excellent press, most notably from the ultra reliable Allen Meadows Burghound. He says Yes there are other fine growers who sometimes make wines equal to those of Barraud but this man almost never misses...as the scores and reviews suggest, his 2005 s deserve to be in your cellar. These are rich, textured wines, high on finesse and complexity. Ripe yet honeyed and elegant - not New World-styled blockbusters! Burgundy 2005 En Primeur Bouchard Pere et Fils A famous name, now revitalised and making some great wines. I have yet to taste from this vintage but all the wines we are offering have had good reviews already. Morey-St-Denis Dujac Fils et Pere 2005 Chambolle-Musigny Dujac Fils et Pere 2005 Vincent Dureuil-Janthial Rully This was a great visit; Vincent is a top man, a hugely energetic and thoughtful winemaker. He started in 1994 with 3 hectares and now has 17. He also works with the moon - biodynamic in most ways. Yields are low from mostly old vines, and the winemaking is quite minimalist in terms of intervention. Vincent s eyes lit up when 2005 was mentioned and said: Magic! All is fabulous, cool, nothing forced. He clearly loves the vintage. This was a big tasting and I will suggest a few of my favourites. Everything is fermented with wild yeasts, and his oak regime is pretty consistent - 1/3 new, 1/3 1 year old, and 1/3 2 year old. All wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Rully Blanc Vincent Dureuil-Janthial 2005 Rully Blanc Vielles Vignes Vincent Dureuil-Janthial 2005 This has great concentration, creamy and minerally, very long. Rully Blanc 1er Cru Margotes Vincent Dureuil-Janthial 2005 Has a hint of orange along with the nutty citrus, stone fruits and liquid minerals on the palate - incredibly long. Rully Blanc 1er Cru Le Meix Cadot Vincent Dureuil-Janthial 2005 This was as great as ever, textured with great intensity, rich and nutty with citrus acidity and a lond, minerally finish. Rully Blanc 1er Cru Le Meix Cadot Vielles Vignes Vincent Dureuil-Janthial 2005 This is even better but very limited. Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champs Gains Vincent Dureuil-Janthial 2005 Absolutely superb, great complexity and length but also very, very limited! Bourgogne Rouge Vincent Dureuil-Janthial 2005 Lovely fruit and depth - really quite serious. Rully Rouge Vielles Vignes Vincent Dureuil-Janthial 2005 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Clos des Argillieres Vincent Dureuil-Janthial 2005 This was also a real star, with loads of fruit and a savoury, meaty edge to it. Long with ripe tannins and lovely oak - tremendous potential. Sylvie Esmonin Gevrey-Chambertin One of my favourite growers though I have yet to taste these. Sylvie likens the wines to the fabulous 2002 s which were/are stunning! Working with mature vineyards, his ethic is very much minimal intervention. Yields are low, new oak never more than 25%, wines are never racked and all are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Jean-Marie said of the 2005 vintage: If you cannot make good wine in 2005 then do something else! All these wines were very impressive, especially the Gevrey-Chambertin s. The winemaking has really been refined over the past few years. He concentrates on white wines now currently 80-90% of his total production. His vineyard selectiona are meticulous and he has amassed some highly prized vineyard parcels himself recently. He uses less oak nowadays, around 30%, and is increasingly using the larger puncheons rather than the traditional barriques so as to reduce oak dominance. He is making 50% less wine than he was 5 years ago when he admits to having lost some focus. Now he is much happier - making less but superior wines and concentrating more on quality and techniques. The grapes were harvested fully ripe and no chaptalisation was required in 2005. Long, slower fermentations and long elevage before bottling: unfiltered for the whites and both unfined and unfiltered for the reds. This was a seriously impressive tasting, especially following on from his 2004 s in which the whites were particularly fine. The 2005 whites (we only tasted 1 red which was gorgeous) are sublime, hence why we are offering such a large range - my recommendations are the pick of what I tasted in November, though certainly not all listed were tasted! Paul Jacquesson has refined his techniques in the vineyard and in the cellar to make ultra-consistent, very high quality wines. He loved the 2005 vintage especially for reds. Winemaker Jacques Lardiere described 2005 as a babysitter vintage, implying that all he had to do was let the fruit ripen to perfection and then harvest which took place under perfect autumn skies. The alcoholic fermentation was prolonged and trouble-free with splendid tannins and colour extraction. The wines from top to bottom are terrific, and I tried many of these wines months ago and will be looking at several of them again in a couple of weeks. Burgundy 2005 En Primeur Domaine Christian Moreau Chablis This fabulous domaine took over half of the family vineyards in 2002; already the quality has been such that Clive Coates has rated it as one of his all-time top 10 Burgundy domaines. This was a hugely impressive visit, and every wine was superb! They have hectares of Chablis Grand Cru and 5 hectares of Chablis 1er Cru in some of the best sites. The family now has no connection with the large negociant of the same name. Son Fabien is the winemaker; they use a small percentage of new oak but prefer to use barrel fermentation and extended elevage. Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons Domaine Christian Moreau 2005 Comes from a 50 year old vineyard; fresh with honeyed stone fruits loaded with minerals. Lemony and steely with a long, creamy finish. Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Vide Bourse Fernand & Laurent Pillot 2005 From a vineyard next door to Batard-Montrachet; excellent with loads of fruit, spice, minerals and oak. Tangy and rich with a long, complex finish. Needs time. Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Grandes Ruchotte Fernand & Laurent Pillot 2005 Storms damaged this vineyard and the yield is 50% less than normal. The wines are rich yet fine and elegant. The brothers believe 2005 to be their best yet, and certainly early press has rated these very highly. Estate wines are known as Domaine de la Soufrandiere, while wines made from (carefully controlled) grapes bought in are known as Bret Brothers. Macon-Vinzelles Clos de Grand Pere Domaine de la Soufrandiere 2005 From old vines, fermented is steel then transferred to barrel. A rich forward style, drink 2007-2011. Pouilly-Vinzelles Domaine de la Soufrandiere 2005 This comes from 23-48 year old vines from the Les Quarts - one of the most famous vineyards in the appellation. Fermented in steel and oak; generous, rich, and rounded and packed with fruit. Drink 2008-2014. Saint-Véran En Combe Bret Brothers 2005 Restrained style with a tight core of fruit and minerals. Structured and sure to age well, to 2014 and perhaps beyond. Pouilly-Loché La Colonge Bret Brothers 2005 The grapes come from the tiniest appellation in Maconnais, adjoining Vinzelles. Expressive with generous white fruits and a real juiciness on the mid-palate. Succulence and richness balanced by lively acidity, drink now - 2014. Pouilly-Vinzelles Les Longeays Domaine de la Soufrandiere 2005 A ripe, juicy style packed with white peach and spicy pear. Fabulous balance between racy fruit, subtle oak and a lingering minerality. Drink 2008-20. Pouilly-Fuissé La Roche Bret Brothers 2005 50 year old vines give this wine a huge, creamy richness; a great, textured palate with stone fruits and a minerally, stony finish. Drink 2008-2014. Pouilly-Vinzelles Les Quarts Domaine de la Soufrandiere 2005 Without doubt Les Quarts is the best vineyard of the appellation, with some of the vines 70 years old. This is a great, ageworthy Maconnais wine. It s full, deep, rich and concentrated, with stone fruits, honey, zesty citrus, oakd and minerals present. Rich and viscous yet so fresh, drink from 2008 and well beyond! 115.00 115.00 147.00 147.00 15.00 210.00 210.00 Domaine Taupenot Merme Moret-St-Denis This was a new winery to me when I visited in November, and I left very impressed! Romain Taupenot has greatly improved things: viticulture is organic, harvesting is by hand. Everything is 100% destemmed, there is a long, cold maceration, and fermentation is in small open-top tanks. The wines are aged in oak (30-40% new on the whole) for -14 months and are bottled unfined and mostly unfiltered. The average age of the vines is 35+ years, impressive winemaking here. Saint-Romain Blanc Domaine Taupenot Merme 2005 Honeyed and nutty, creamy and rich with great acidity - impressive. Drink 2008-2011. 9.00 22 Noel Young Wines Newsletter February - March 2007

Noel Young Wines Rhone 2005 En Primeur There have been many excellent vintages in The Rhone Valley over the last few years, but 2005 is truly outstanding and will be of the greatest especially if one looks at the north and south as a whole. Good news too that on the whole prices still remain very fair. North The vintage was characterized by a dry, warm summer, with little of the raging heat which marked the 2003 vintage and more warmth than 2004. June and July were hot and August was cooler with the vines benefiting from a few welcome showers. From September, apart from a storm at the beginning of the month, the weather was perfectly warm and dry, with cool breezy nights. This allowed growers to pick wonderfully ripe, healthy fruit at their leisure. The resulting wines are rich, concentrated, profound and multi-dimensional with beautiful precise, clear flavours. The white wines have, again, been extremely successful. South A brilliant vintage in the south, with hot dry days and cool nights resulting in a long, even ripening period. The summer drought conditions were relieved by refreshing rains at the beginning of September and picking, in ideal conditions, allowed the growers to gather superb, ripe, healthy fruit. The wines are stunning, with great richness, depth and concentration and scintillating freshness, energy and balance. This is a great year and quantities, as a result of low yields, are low. We cannot recommend highly enough that customers express an early interest. The red and white wines will be shipped in the Autumn of 2007 and early 2008, though some Cotes du Rhone s are here now. We have confirmed quantities on most wines though we are awaiting final allocations on some wines. Please note ALL orders will be treated as a REQUEST for an allocation - you will not be charged until we confirm. Unlike Burgundy 2005 we should be able to confirm almost immediately. Wines are offer under bond, ex Duty, VAT and onward shipping. Domaine Daniel and Denis Alary, Cairanne Great value offerings and the wines are a great success. Rhone 2005 En Primeur Domaine du Pegau, Chateauneuf-du-Pape Laurence Feraud is making some stunning wines at Pegau; always good, yet from 2001 the wines have taken a further step up in quality and is now regarded as one of the top 3 or 4 Domaines. They have not produced their top cuvée Capo in 2004, 2005 or 200, and are just making this the Reservée. We have a limited allocation. I have not tasted these yet but after the fabulous 2004 s these should be very special. The Cotes du Rhone and Lirac should not be overlooked! André Romero, happily ensconced in his new winery, makes fabulous, rich and hearty reds. His techniques have been refined in recent years with the arrival of a consultant oenologist from a swanky Chateau in St. Emilion. With old vines, some are over 90 years old, he has superb raw materials. These are simply stunning wines, and whilst I have not tasted, every vintage since 1998 have been amazing, especially 2001, 2003 and 2004. Chateau de Saint Cosme/Saint Cosme, Gigondas Louis Barruol thinks 2005 to be a great vintage both north and south; this is a wonderfully consistent Chateau and producer of wines from bought in grapes. We have been shipping these stunning wines since 1998. Other than the fabulous Cotes du Rhone, I have not tasted these, so I enclose a precis of Louis notes on the wines - please email us if you would like the full, frank and detailed notes on the wines and the vintage. Louis says both Gigondas and Chateauneuf wines will be monumental in 2005. Also, Time will show everybody how great the 2005 vintage is in the northern Rhone. Please note: the Cote-Rotie, Gigondas Valbelle & Hominis Fides most be bought in conjunction with another wine. Saint Cosme Cotes du Rhone Blanc 200 40% Roussanne, 20% Clairette, 20% Marsanne, 10% Viognier and 10% Picpoul de Pinet. Fermented in barrels of various ages, from new to 5 years old, and aged for months on lees. Chateau de Saint Cosme Cotes du Rhone Blanc La Poste 200 Very limited. Saint Cosme Condrieu 2005 Aged for 8 months in 30% new oak, 40% 1 year old barrels, and 30% in 2 year old barrels. Louis makes a refined and balanced style and says no room in Saint Cosme for heavy apricot. Another top vintage. Saint Cosme Cotes du Rhone 2005 As ever, 100% Syrah. Bright and juicy with lovely red fruits and black pepper. Pure and juicy, drinking well now and over the next couple of years. Saint Cosme Cotes de Ventoux Domaine de la Crillone 2005 This is made from low-yielding, old vine Grenache agted in 2-4 year old oak. The 2004 needed a little time to come round but was (and is) seriously impressive. Chateau de Saint Cosme Gigondas 2005 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 8% Mourvedre and 2% Cinsault; 70% is aged for months in 1-4 year old barrels, the rest in vars. Louis says this is a fabulous, big, intense wine: full of finesse, intensity and balance. They are so close to their terroir, so easy to understand because their beauty is obvious. Drink 2008-2015. Chateau de Saint Cosme Gigondas Valbelle 2005 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah, aged in oak for months, 40% of which was new and 0% 1 year old. This is produced from the oldest vines of Saint Cosme. Chateau de Saint Cosme Gigondas Valbelle MAGNUM 2005 Saint Cosme Cote Rotie 2005 100% Syrah aged 15 months in new oak, unfiltered. Noel Young Wines Isabel Estate, Marlborough New Zealand Isabel Estate has become one of our most important New Zealand wineries, with its Sauvignon Blanc in particular gaining quite a cult following - second in demand only to Cloudy Bay. These 3 new 200 s are excellent, all crisp, fresh and elegant. The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir will be released in summer. Isabel Estate Dry Riesling 200 This makes a refreshing change in many respects; many of the 200 Riesling s we have seen have been bottled with some residual sugar, which does often make a style I really like. However, this is bone-dry, and very well done. Handpicked quite late in the season, the wine is aged in stainless steel with some time on lees to gain some mid-palate weight. A fresh nose with lime and lemon, on the palate it s tight and fresh with zesty citrus fruits including grapefuit. There is a good weight of fruit on the palate preventing it from being too tight, this is very appealing now, and sure to age over the next 5 years of more. Isabel Estate Pinot Gris 200 Again, Isabel Estate make their own style, focussing more on aromatics and crispness rather than honey and higher alcohol. Handpicked over 2 weeks, some fruit was whole-bunch pressed, some cold-soaked in open fermenters. The emphasis is on keeping the bright aromatics. Crisp citrus and honeyed stone fruits on the nose, really bright and lively with lovely sweet fruits. It s crisp and fresh with a fine depth of fruit, and a long, dry finish. Isabel Estate Sauvignon Blanc 200 Eagerly awaited every year! This is not just your usual Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Handpicked in perfect conditions within the first 11 days of April, and a little skin contact was experimented with. The fruit was really tropical and aromatic, and most of the fruit was cold fermented in stainless steel tanks. A portion was passed directly into barrel where spontaneous fermentation and later malolactic fermentation occurred. Quite herbaceous and zesty on the nose, lots of grassy fruit, with some ripe and tropical notes too. Quite rich and full-flavoured, it has quite a lot more depth and body than most. An excellent long, dry finish. This also should age well. Noel Young Wines Retail Case Retail Case Retail Case Magpie Estate, Barossa Valley Australia 10.99 1.00 11.49 7.00 11.99 133.00 I have just returned from Australia which is enduring, sadly, another drought. An already very early harvest is underway, and the crop, which should be good quality-wise, was severely reduced by frost, berry splitting and drought. I have just blended the 2005 s and these look to be some of the very best yet; we also blended The Schnell and The Beak Red 200 s and they also look to be very good - the other wines will be put back into oak for another - months. Here, however, we have a couple of early releases: the new The Beak White, which I always say is the best yet! But I do believe this really is, mostly down to us buying some delicious Sauvignon Blanc from Padthaway. We also have the The Thief, a drier more Rhone-styled rosé. Magpie Estate The Beak Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc 200 Our cracking new release; we used grapes from different parcels t o make The Beak this year, and is a blend of 51.5% Semillon and 48.5% Sauvignon Blanc, totally unoaked. The Semillon is all Barossa fruit, while the Sauvignon is a mixture of Barossa and Padthaway grapes. A really fresh, zesty nose with some honeyed Semillon; very juicy and crisp on a tangy, fresh palate with green citrus and a hint of peach, good weight and length. At 5.99 it really is a bit of a bargain! Magpie Estate The Thief 200 Rosé Our ever popular Thief is quite different in 200 - I wanted to make a slightly drier, more Rhone-like rosé, and we have! We bleed off juice from selected Grenache and Mourvedre parcels and a touch of Cabernet. After 24-3 hours on skins we have all the colour and flavour we need without the tannins. It is a reasonably deep colour with attractive berry fruits on the nose with a touch of spice. Fairly full-bodied and dry it has lovely red fruits and again spice on the palate. It reminds me of a Tavel rosé in style. A great food style, try with salads, grilled fish, barbecues and even spicy dishes. Drink within the next -18 months. Noel Young Wines Yarra Yering, Yarra Valley Australia 2004 Some fabulous new wines from this mercurial, cult winery in the Yarra Valley. Founded by the eccentric, passionate and brilliant Dr Bailey Carrodus in 199. Over the years, consistency has been an issue but when they are good, they are very good! Indeed, over the last 5-10 years, the inconsistency has been purely down to the vintage as the winemaking has much improved. These new 2004 s are stunning, and we also have most of the also fine 2003 s available. The quotes come from Robert Parker s The Wine Advocate. Yarra Yering Chardonnay 2004 As ever, quite a funky style; a honeyed nose with ripe citrus, butterscotch and lees too. On the palate it has quite marked acidity with bright citrus characters, and rich, nutty oak too. It s quite powerful and needs time to develop; honeyed, nutty and long with fresh acidity. It will be interesting to see how this develops. Yarra Yering Pinot Noir 2004 Parker was not that fond of this though he did say it was fresh and lively. It s a funk style (and always has been), with concentration and tightly wound fruit. I have tasted several of the Pinot s after a few years bottle age and they have been sensational. Expensive but worth a go! Yarra Yering Sangiovese 2004 Parker did not see this wine, the latest project at Yarra Yering; I have not tasted it yet either though I have a sample and will post a note later. Yarra Yering Underhill Shiraz 2004 From 100% Shiraz grown on the Underhill vineyard; this has become really quite exciting over recent years as the vines have matured. It s big, rich and structured. Robert Parker said The 2004 Shiraz Underhill may be the finest example of this cuvee Yarra Yering has yet produced. Its inky/purple colour is accompanied by a gorgeous nose of crème de cassis, acacia flowers, white pepper, and steely, earthy characteristics. Medium to full body, awesome concentration and richness, and a delicate, ethereal lightness suggest this stunning Shiraz can be drunk now and over the next -15+ years. It is a singular expression of Shiraz from the Yarra Valley. 9 points Drink 2007-2021. Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 1 2004 This has been a benchmark Bordeaux blend for many years, and is the wine that made Yarra Yering famous. It s on top form with this 2004, with lovely ripe, perfumed cassis and plum. Robert Parker said, A combination of 70-80% Cabernet Sauvignon, about 20% Merlot, and dollops of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the 2004 Dry Red Wine No. 1 offers a beautiful perfume of incense, dried herbs, red and black fruits, damp earth, and cedar. With fabulous fruit purity, medium to full body, and moderately high tannin, this rich, stunning red should age effortlessly for twenty years. It will be even better with 2-4 more years of bottle age. 95 points. Drink 2008-202. Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 2 2004 This Rhone-inspired blend has been produced at Yarra Yering for many years and was utilising Viognier/ Marsanne long before the current trend had begun. This is a powerful, brooding wine, really quite different to the more accessible 2003. It has more intensity, more structure and will be superb. Robert Parker said, The 2004 Dry Red Wine No. 2 (95% Shiraz and 5% Marsanne and Viognier), while also amazing, is more closed, tannic, and harder to fully penetrate than the Shiraz. With aeration, the bouquet reveals notions of exotic Asian spices intermixed with flowers, blackberries, and cassis. In the mouth, the wine struts its stuff with a full-bodied, layered, broad, flavourful, concentrated style and moderately high tannin in the finish. This fabulous bambino needs to be cellared for 2-4 years and drunk over the following two decades. 94 points drink 2008-202. It s rich with bright berry fruits, cherry, plum, and a little oak. Crunchy with good weight and ripe tannins, structured with good weight and depth. Brampton Shiraz 2005 - South Africa This, from Adi Badenhorst, is the best yet in my opinion. The blend has changed this year and includes.5% Mourvedre, % Grenache, and 1.5% Viognier, coming from 14 different parcels. It s a fabulous, rich, chocolatey, plummy style with spice and pepper plus creamy oak. The tannins are ripe and it s very long - very good. Chapoutier Limestone Coast Shiraz 2005 - Australia From Michel Chapoutier of the Rhone Valley in France. He has been making wine here for quite some time, but this, his cheapest offering, is the first to really convince. Rich berry fruit, pepper and oak, it;s ripe and juicy yet retains an almost French-like elegance. It also possesses a touch of regional mint for a change - excellent. Saint Clair Doctor s Creek Reserve Pinot Noir 2005 - New Zealand An absolutely sensational, opulent Pinot Noir from the fabulous Saint Clair. Doctor s Creek vineyard in Marlborough is owned by Saint Clair and is consistently producing some of the best fruit they get. A lovely floral nose with plum, raspberry, black cherry and oak; soft and velvety on the palate with red berry, black cherry, plum and a touch of spice and integrated creamy oak. Fabulous now it s voluptuous and just so delicious! Vetus Toro 2004 - Spain 2004 is a super vintage for the majority of Spain, and the wines of Toro are getting better all the time. This is a powerful wine with dense red and black fruits and oak on the nose. Dense on the palate with plenty of ripe berry fruits, black cherry, meat, spice and oak with ripe tannins. Decant and serve with hearty foods or let it develop over the next 3-7 years. A classy wine.
