County-wide Histories Klamath County History Resources Selected Books History of Klamath County, Oregon: Its Resources and People (1941) Linsy Sisemore, editor-in-chief ; Rachel Applegate Good, historian. A detailed description of the history of the Klamath Basin through 1940; includes biographical sketches. History of Klamath Country Oregon (1984) published by the Klamath County Historical Society Submitted family histories are the main focus; also includes review articles on historical topics about the Klamath Basin covering activities up to the 1980s. Illustrated History of Central Oregon embracing Wasco, Sherman, Gilliam, Wheeler, Crook, Lake and Klamath Counties, State of Oregon (1905) A detailed description of the history of the Klamath Basin to 1905; includes biographical sketches. Histories of Local Places An Illustrated History of Early Northern Klamath County Oregon (1989) Edward Gray A history of northern Klamath County in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Merrill Centennial, 1894-1994 (1994) published by the Merrill Centennial Committee Celebrates the history of Merrill, Oregon and the surrounding area on the occasion of the town s centennial. The Years of Harvest: A History of the Tule Lake Basin, 3 rd edition (2002) by Stan Turner. The classic history of the Tule Lake Basin, including a large section on the Tule Lake Relocation and Segregation Center. Crater Lake National Park: A History (2002) by Rick Harmon The first comprehensive popular history of Crater Lake National Park. History of Rocky Point, Oregon (2002) by William J. Cadman and LoEtta A. Cadman History of Upper Klamath Lake s communities and how they shaped a rich past and present in tourism, recreation, hunting, trapping, and fishing. Where Fortune Calls (2007) published by the Shaw Historical Library Settlement A series of articles examining the development of successful and not-sosuccessful communities in the Klamath County region. Settling of Southern Klamath County by Czech Colonization Club (1985) compiled by Vlasta Zumpfe Petrik and Joe Zumpfe An eyewitness account of the Czech Colonization Club s establishment of the town of Malin, Oregon in 1909. Includes some primary source material. Sagebrush to Shakespeare (1984) by Carrol B. Howe Achievements and contributions of well known Klamath Country residents. The expeditions of John Charles Frémont (1970, 1973, 1984) edited by Donald Jackson and Mary Lee Spence A multi-volume, edited and indexed version of Frémont s journals. A map portfolio is an additional volume. Includes Fremont s descriptions of the Upper Klamath Lake area in the 1840s. Page 2 of 6

Reports of explorations and surveys, to ascertain the most practicable and economical route for a railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. Made under the direction of the secretary of war, in 1853-[6]. Includes a description of the Klamath Basin/Tule Lake area in the 1850s. Also documents the flora and fauna of the region. Native Peoples The Klamath Indians of southwestern Oregon (1890) by Albert Samuel Gatschet, This two volume government report contains the first ethnographic study of the Klamath peoples as well as large sections on the Klamath language. Klamath Ethnography (1930) by Leslie Spier This ethnography focuses on Klamath social life, shamanism, economics and material culture. The Klamath Tribe; a people and their reservation, (1965) by Theodore Stern Modoc War A history of the Klamath Tribes including an extensive discussion of the tribal termination in the 1950s. The Indian History of the Modoc War: And the Causes that Led to It (1914) by Jeff C. Riddle An account of the Modoc War by the son of Winema (Toby Riddle). The Modocs and their War (1959) by Keith A. Murray An early secondary account of the Modoc War, based upon extensive use of primary sources held by the National Park Service, the Bancroft Library, O.C. Applegate and other materials. Modoc War: Its Military History & Topography (1971) by Erwin N. Thompson, with a preface by Keith A. Murray An account of the Modoc War written from a military history perspective. Keith A. Murray wrote the preface. Burnt-out Fires (1973) by Richard Dillon Another account of the Modoc War including sections detailing events that led to the conflict and giving it a broader context. Guardhouse, Gallows and Graves: The Trial and Execution of Indian Prisoners of the Modoc Indian War by the U.S. Army, 1873 (1988) by Francis S. Landrum A detailed account of the events leading to the executions of Captain Jack and other Modoc warriors after the Modoc War, including many primary source documents. Klamath Reclamation Project Balancing Water Restoring the Klamath Basin (2000) by Tupper Ansel Blake, Madeleine Graham Blake and William Kitteredge A collaboration between two award-winning photographers and a well-known author describing the complex interactions between water and land in the Klamath Basin. Klamath Project Annual Histories Annual reports of the Klamath Reclamation Project detailing yearly construction, management and administrative activities. Print and electronic copies are available for use. A River Never the Same (1999) published by the Shaw Historical Library A series of articles examining the history of water use in the Klamath Basin just prior to the water crisis of 2001. Timber Industry Railroad Logging in the Klamath Country (2003) by Jack Bowden The standard work on railroad logging in the Klamath Basin. An Oral History of Winema National Forest (1981) by Royal G. Jackson and Jennifer A. Lee (Heritage Associates, Inc.) A series of interview transcripts about uses of the Winema National Forest/Klamath Reservation timberlands by various groups, including loggers, ranchers and native peoples. And Then We Logged (2002) published by the Shaw Historical Library A series of articles and a photographic essay examining the history of the timber industry in the Klamath Basin. A look at the timber industry in the Klamath Basin to the early 1940s by a prominent local industry figure. Selected Periodicals Klamath Echoes (1964-1977) sixteen issues devoted to many aspects of Klamath County history edited by Devere and Helen Helfrich. Journal of the Shaw Historical Library (1986, v. 1 present, ongoing) an annual journal of scholarly articles, reminiscences and photographs about many aspects of Klamath County history. The most recent twelve issues are thematic in nature. Oregon Historical Quarterly (1900, v. 1 present, ongoing) the Oregon Historical Society s scholarly quarterly journal on Oregon history. Klamath County Museum Research Papers a series of research papers on various topics prepared under the auspices of the Klamath County Museum in the 1960s and 1970s. Tulelake Reporter the weekly newspaper covering the Tulelake area. Klamath News the newspaper of the Klamath Tribes. Tule Lake Relocation and Segregation Center Collection--a collection of documents and ephemera about the Tule Lake Relocation and Segregation Center, its impacts on the local area and the Tule Lake Pilgrimages.
