2 Croatian Wine Production Is the Croatian wine production in the agony of the global crisis or in the calm of the forthcoming export expansion? Taking into consideration that Croatian viniculture and wine production are one of the rare economic branches which had a significant success in the development of its own potentials in the new Croatia, numerous questions have been raised in these global and crisis-devastated market relations regarding the challenges for creating the common market identity of Croatian wines and wine producers at the global wine market. Champions and pioneers of the Croatian wine scene such as Zdjelarevic, Plenkovic, Enjingi, Krauthaker, Katunar, Skaramuca, and numerous others, smaller or larger wine producers, who encouraged the general popularisation of this highly appreciated production branch in the world back in the period of pre-war Croatia, nowadays surely counting the bills from their investments, even though they are objectively still burdened with the original capital accumulation and investment risks. After the initial twenty-five years of arduous, yet very successful development of small and medium-sized wineries, the large wineries such as Kutjevo, Belje, Ilocki Podrumi, Agrolaguna and others have finally been reincarnated in the new entrepreneurial spirit, refreshed with big entrepreneurs capital. The already serious wine scene has additionally been spiced up with new, so-called Lifestyle investors. They have turned the foundations of their market identity from hedonism of their personal attitude toward wine into their own affordable expensive hobby in the aspiration to achieve a social status which raises the wine creators reputation in the quality enhancement of their existing social status. Encouraged with the initial enthusiasm of wine hedonism and individual market reputation of numerous new wine makers in almost all Croatian wine production regions at the local level of specific regions, new awareness has been raised to come together in the process of defining common goals and creating quality market communication. As a logical consequence of the process, an umbrella association for Croatian wine production at the Croatian Chamber of Commerce has been established, which raised the awareness by joint efforts in the nick of time for the need of developing Croatian umbrella market identity under a very clever working name called The Croatian Wine Mosaic. Thus we finally reached the wellknown fact that, regardless of the numerous individual successes in our mutual competition, we cannot be self-sufficient since we are only at the threshold of revelation that the key issue of future survival of Croatian wine production at the global wine scene is conditioned by raising awareness for the need of fast and well-designed, targeted and quality market actions in creating common national market identity and reputation in The Croatian Wine Mosaic project. Are there good solutions on this path? The Croatian wine scene is nowadays at a significant milestone on the survival path, both in the great competition in the domestic production at the domestic market and in the global wine market. Following the initial enthusiastic fervour and realistic perspective, numerous successful investments in Croatian wine production nowadays have a bit of a bitter aftertaste burdened by crisis at the domestic and world market, conditioned especially by great competition, the fall of purchasing power and a large drop in prices which undermine business profitability. Many of us, who have invested a lot in the desire to make a faster progress, have more difficulties in dealing with this situation. It is very important to understand that wine production is a business which requires almost urgent, continuous and large investments in basic means and technologies in the initial development stage. Unfortunately, the original capital accumulation in this business is not sufficient for the amortisation of such investments. At the time the developed capitalist wine countries had already solved this issue, we have not even started the new investment cycle. Many of our neighbouring countries in transition have already activated strategic partnership investments which have enabled domestic wine makers to survive in the fast-growing global competition, and surely, many Croatian wine makers will inevitably require such a step forward in the process of sustainable survival. Exactly these processes, no matter how necessary they may be, can sometimes also be painful because they bring along an uncertainty on the desired path toward success. However, our people sometimes see such decisions as a weakness in the sense of losing personal identity of a particular wine maker. Nevertheless, since every medal has two sides, it is clear that in such processes you always win some, even though you also might lose some. Still, the reality is that on the usual life path of its own development, each company has its critical moments in almost inevitable processes of transformation from a small into a medium-sized and large enterprise. The most important fact remains to recognise risks and your own potentials on time, and clearly define development goals, i.e. decide whether to keep the company within the frames of a small family production or to readily take up the challenge of further development brought along by the necessary transformation. For those who decide to take the step of further intensive development and enter potential partnership strategic investments, as I have, it is crucial to define relations in advance and achieve a sustainable relations model in which all investors unreservedly give their entire capital contribution, and especially their personal social capital for the benefit of the common company with clear and honest goals. In such relations, different viewpoints may always arise, and they require necessary, sustainable and viable, realistic economic logics and great mutual respect. What to expect from future joint projects? If we set aside a partial feeling of powerlessness in the fear of large demands set before us on the path of the inevitable forthcoming process of joint branding of Croatia on the world wine scene, we must turn back and take a realistic look at everything we have, and under which circumstances, achieved in the development of the Croatian wine scene. Regardless of all current difficulties, we must be proud and satisfied! Significant steps in creating a stable and firm regional identity are already seen in the working strategies of local and regional associations, and there are sound development strategies, which surely bring along the possibility of achieving commonly set goals, in the umbrella association for Croatian wine production at the Croatian Chamber of Commerce at the national level. Strong regional branding in consortiums of Grasevina, Malvazija and Plavac mali, as already recognised indigenous values of Croatian wine production, is the only right way. On this path to success, no one in this world has ever skipped a single development stage or step, so let us be patient and remain ready for large renunciations and a lot of hard work. In today s world, there is still a place for persistent people, so let us cast away all theses and political phrases on revivals and reforms of already reformed reformists, and as they say, stick to our guns, because Croatian wine production has only embarked on its world s journey. It is a well-known fact in our profession that a vineyard, which has not been hoed, has not yielded any fruit, and no wine has seen the light of day without sweat and tears. The reward itself we get from tasting this intoxicating nectar, is a worthy reward for our sacrifice, therefore, it goes without saying, WINE AND WINE MAKERS WILL SURELY SURVIVE! We are moving forward! After fifty-two years of life and thirty years of working on the development of the Zdjelarevic family wine brand, after the sale of the real estate part of business in Brodski Stupnik, as the owners of the protected family identity Zdjelarevic Wine Brand, and with all well developed and structured production, and well as with many good and bad experiences which have opened our eyes to new development ideas, we are moving forward! Naslijedivši 1987. g. obiteljsko imanje u Brodskom Stupniku, Davor i Višnja Zdjelarević započeli su svoj impresivan životni put potaknuvši mnoge na putu stvaranja novog identiteta hrvatske vinske scene. Since 1985 the Zdjelarevic family has been among the first private wineries which started the revitalization process of entrepreneurship in Croatia s wine production and wine production in general. Having inherited the family estate in Brodski Stupnik in 1987, Davor and Visnja Zdjelarevic embarked on their impressive life journey encouraging many others on their way of creating new identity of Croatia s wine scene. After thirty years in the wine production industry and with new joint ideas, we keep going together. Our family is sometimes nice, sometimes harsh, sometimes crazy, but we are always ambitious and creative. The foundation of our success is the synergy of our diversity and commitment to joint goals! 3

PRVA PRIVATNA VINARIJA U HRVATSKOJ Obiteljska vinarija Zdjelarević, prva je privatna vinarija,koja je 1985.g. u bivšoj Jugoslaviji,pokrenula u Hrvatskoj proces revitalizacije privatnog poduzetništva 1987. EDUKATIVNO STUDIJSKO PUTOVANJE U AMERIKU Tijekom studija agronomije u Zagrebu, Davor Zdjelarević usavršio je temelje vizije svoga poslovnog razvoja jednogodišnjim boravkom u Americi (Napa i Sonoma) u tada najprosperitetnijim vinskim regijama Kalifornije. 1991. PODIZANJE NOVIH NASADA U BRODSKOM STUPNIKU Naslijedivši obiteljsko imanje u Brodskom Stupniku, Davor Zdjelarević zajedno sa suprugom Višnjom kreće u revitalizaciju obiteljskog nasljeđa sadnjom prvih 10 hektara vinograda i gradnjom svoje nove vinarije. 1997. IZ ZAGREBA U BRODSKI STUPNIK Postavivši nove ciljeve daljnjega razvoja, mlada obitelj Zdjelarević s kćerkama Injom i Klarom seli iz Zagreba u Brodski Stupnik! 2000. POČETAK IZGRADNJE NOVE VINARIJE I HOTELA Uvidjevši potencijal daljnjeg razvoja, obitelj Zdjelarević pokreće dovršetak gradnje novog podruma, a zatim hotela i restorana s ciljem razvoja vinskoga turizma na destinaciji. 2003. OTVORENJE NOVE VINARIJE I HOTELA Nakon dvogodišnjeg napora, otvorena je nova vinarija s ugostiteljskim sadržajem, prvi hrvatski vinski hotel. 2007. PARTNERSTVO ZA DALJNJE ULAGANJE Intenzivni razvoj proizvodnje i zahtjevi za novim investicijama usmjerili su nas na odluku daljnjeg razvoja uz partnersko ulaganje kojemu je cilj daljnje financiranje i ostvarenje novih plasmana izvoza. 2014. OSTVARENJE NOVE VIZIJE ZDJELAREVIĆ VINO SELEKCIJA Potaknut novim razvojnim idejama nakon trideset godina iskustva i pedeset godina života, Davor Zdjelarević s ciljem proširenja svojih poslovnih aktivnosti otvara projekt prve difuzne vinarije u Hrvatskoj. 1985 FIRST PRIVATE WINERY IN CROATIA Following the post-communist period in the former Yugoslavia, the Zdjelarevic family winery is the first private winery which began the process of revitalization of private entrepreneurship in Croatia 1987 EDUCATIONAL STUDY TRIP TO AMERICA During the agronomics study in Zagreb, Davor Zdjelarevic perfected the foundations of his vision on the development of his business during a year he spent in the USA (Napa and Sonoma) in the most prosperous wine regions at the time 1991 NEW PLANTATIONS IN BRODSKI STUPNIK After he inherited the family estate in Brodski Stupnik, together with this wife Visnja, Davor Zdjelarevic started to revitalize the family heritage by planting the first 10 hectares of vineyards and building his new winery 1997 FROM ZAGREB TO BRODSKI STUPNIK Having set the goals for further development, the young Zdjelarevic family moved from Zagreb to Brodski Stupnik with their daughters Inja and Klara! 2000 BEGINNINGS OF NEW WINERY AND HOTEL Upon seeing the potential of further development, the Zdjelarevic family finished building the new wine cellar, as well as the hotel and the restaurant with the aim to develop wine tourism at the location 2003 NEW WINERY AND HOTEL OPENING After two years of efforts, the new winery with hospitality facilities was opened the first Croatian wine hotel 2007 PARTNERSHIP FOR FURTHER INVESTMENTS Intensive development of production and demand for new investments led us to opt for further development with a partnership investment which aimed at further financing and achieving new export placements 2014 ACHIEVEMENT OF NEW VISION ZDJELAREVIC VINO SELEKCIJA Encouraged with new development ideas, after thirty years of experience and fifty years of life, Davor Zdjelarevic started a project for the first diffusion winery in Croatia with the aim to expand business activities.

Od 2014. g. nova je tvrtka, pravni slijednik branda vina Zdjelarević u vlasništvu njenog stvaraoca Davora Zdjelarevića. Potaknuta dinamičnim razvojem tržišta vina nakon odluke o prodaji nekretninskog djela biznisa u Brodskom Stupniku 2014. g. obitelj Zdjelarević osnivanjem svoje nove tvrtke ( po uzoru novih svjetskih trendova ) pokrenula je jedinstveni projekt prve difuzne vinarije proširivši svoju današnju proizvodnju širom hrvatske i regije. Nastavivši proizvodnju svojih dobro znanih vina slavonskih sorti, naša današnja proizvodnja obuhvaća i većinu najznačajnijih Zdjelarević Vino Selekcija Potaknut dinamičnim razvojem tržišta vina, nakon prodaje nekretninskog dijela biznisa u Brodskom Stupniku, Davor Zdjelarević osnivanjem nove tvrtke pokrenuo je jedinstveni projekt prve difuzne vinarije u Hrvatskoj. autohtonih sorti svih hrvatskih vinskih regija, diferencirane u više linija proizvoda: Klink@, Special Edition, ZWS, Zdjelarević Essence, Nagual i Grof. Sva naša vina danas nastaju idejnom razradom i pod strogo definiranim enološkim smjernicama i standardima enologa Davora Zdjelarevića, a proizvode se u vinogradima i podrumima partnerskih vinarija na brojnim proizvodnim lokacijama širom hrvatske i regije. Naša vina danas ciljano nudimo i prodajemo u najboljim trgovačkim sustavima te ugostiteljskom kanalu prodaje putem naših regionalnih distributera. Zdjelarević Wine Selection Tvrtka / Company Since 2014. it is a new company, a legal successor of the Vina Zdjelarević brand, owned by its creator Davor Zdjelarević. Encouraged by the dynamic wine market development, and following the decision to sell the real estate part of the business in Brodski Stupnik in 2014, the Zdjelarević family set up a new company (inspired by new world trends), and embarked on a unique project of the first diffuse winery by extending its present production across Croatia and the region. Having continued the production of well-known Slavonian wine sorts, our production today also comprises the majority of the most significant native sorts of all Croatian wine regions differentiated in several product lines: Klink@, Special Edition, ZWS, Essence, Nagual and Grof. All our wines are created today through elaborated ideas and under strictly defined enological guidelines and standards of enologist Davor Zdjelarević, and are made in vineyards and cellars of partner wineries at various production locations across Croatia and the region. Nowadays, we intentionally offer and sell our wines in the best trade systems and hospitality sales channel through our regional distributors. In addition, we place a special emphasis on active correspondence through social networks, as well as direct sales through our web shop. 5

Naša vina / Our Wines This series of wines is represented by young wines produced according to modern world trends, and are among the first in Croatia in the quality wine category with a screw cap. These are wines which mesmerize with the richness of their primary fruit aromas, fresh and light taste, ranging from dry through semi-dry to semi-sweet taste: Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Malvazija and Rosé. This wine style, as well as its visual and market communication, is a new step forward in expanding the wine culture among younger generations. It was proclaimed the most successful project in Croatian wine production industry in 2009 by wine reviewers. 7

Special Edition serija je vrlo elegantnih, više voćnih i laganih sortnih vina s nižim postotkom alkohola. Takva vina primjerena su za potrošnju posebno u ljetnim mjesecima te u segmentu ugostiteljstva nezahtjevne visoke gastronomije i velike potrošnje. Special Edition series is a series of extremely elegant, fruitier and light wine sorts with a lower percentage of alcohol. These wines are appropriate for consumption especially in summer and in the hospitality segment of undemanding high gastronomy and wide consumption. According to the latest world trends, these wines have a screw cap which ensures preservation of freshness and primary sort aroma. The screw cap is also practical for closing and storing the wine bottle once it has been opened.

Proizvodnja pjenušca klasičnom metodom vrenja u boci najveće je iskušenje enološkog umijeća za svakoga vinara. Dok je pjenušac Milennium osobni uradak Davora Zdjelarevića, koji je imao hrabrosti sačuvati na talogu ovaj jedinstveni proizvod punih 14 godina, pjenušci Classic i Classic rose proizvedeni su u suradnji s jednim od ponajboljih enoloških virtuoza Zdravkom Mastnakom iz Slovenije. Ovaj projekt posvećen je 30. godišnjici vinskog branda Zdjelarević te je samo još jedan dokaz neiscrpne kreativne energije svojeg kreatora Davora Zdjelarevića! This series is represented by three sparkling wines: Millennium, Classic and Classic Rosé. The production of sparkling wine with a classic method of fermentation in a bottle is the biggest challenge in wine production art for each wine maker. Whereas Millennium sparkling wine is a personal creation of Davor Zdjelarevic, who had the courage to keep this unique product on the sediment for full 14 years, Classic and Classic Rosé are made in cooperation with one of the very best wine virtuosos, Mr. Zdravko Mastnak from Slovenia. This project is dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Zdjelarevic wine brand, and it represents yet another evidence of unfailing creative energy of its maker Davor Zdjelarevic! 12

Turizam, kao glavna hrvatska gospodarska djelatnost, na najbolji način povezuje hrvatske vinare sa domaćom i svjetskom tržišnom populacijom. Razvijenost hrvatske vinske scene velika je za naše uvjete no još uvijek vrlo mala u usporedbi sa svjetskim tržištima.. Iz obitelji Zdjelarević napominju kako je: ukupna hrvatska produkcija vina samo jedan mali vinski butik, a hrvatska kao vinska zemlja samo jedna mala draguljarnica ukupne svjetske vinske scene. Iz predmetnih razloga više nego ikad kvalitetno definirana vinska karta u ugostiteljskim objektima temelj je poštivanja vinara i gastronomske struke u cijelosti. Tourism, as the main Croatian business activity, best connects Croatian winemakers with domestic and world market populations. The development of the Croatian wine scene is great for our conditions but still very small compared to the world markets. Zdjelarević family notes that: the total Croatian production of wine is only one small wine boutique, and Croatia as a wine country is only one small jewel of the world s wine scenes.
