Agenda The Winemaking Process What Makes a great a Wine? Main challenges and constraints Using Technology to optimize wine production Conclusion 3

Winemaking Process The Vineyards 4

Winemaking Process Harvesting Grapes are picked up by hand or mechanically 5

Winemaking Process Stemming : is the separation of the stems and grapes (which are sends to the press) Crushing: A horizontal press squeezes the broken grapes, separating the fresh juice (must) from the skins (marc) After crushing starts the fermentation process. 6

Winemaking Process Fermentation sugar and acids that naturally react with wild yeasts Vineyard adding their own yeasts fermentation can take from 10 to 30 days to convert natural sugar to alcohol. Draining Liquid wine is drained from the vat without being pressed and go into barrels. 7

Winemaking Process Aging The final stage in vinification is aging the wine. At this point, the clarified wine is transferred into either wooden barrels or metal vats in which the wine is allowed to further mature and develop flavors. 8

Winemaking Process Bottling The final step of wine production. 9

What Makes a great wine? 10

What makes a great wine? Quality of Grape vines Manufacturing Process 11

What defines the Quality of Grape Vines? Type of the Grape vines Environmental conditions Rainfall and Irrigation 12

When to Irrigate and How much? 13

Factors Affecting Irrigation Environmental Variables : Temperature Relative Humidity Solar Radiation Wind Direction and Velocity 14

Factors Affecting Irrigation Soil Variables : Temperature Moisture Conductivity Precipitation profile 15

Factors Affecting Irrigation Variation of Conditions in Large areas : Variation in Soil type Variation in Environmental conditions 16

Evapotranspiration Water loss from evaporation from the soil surface Plant's loss of water through transpiration 17

Agriculture Control Manual Irrigation Timed or Scheduled Irrigation Smart Irrigation 18

Features of a SMART Irrigation ET calculation based on environmental and soil conditions. Proper time and proper amount of water. Monitors the health and detects the faults of water distribution network. 19

Benefits of a SMART Irrigation Reduces water usage Higher availability of the assets (pumps, Valves, ) Reduces manpower Eliminates human mistakes 20
