GYC Wins Sailing Awards Second week of January, Gulfport Yacht Club hosted the annual Gulf Yachting Association (GYA) winter meeting. For those who don t know, the GYA winter meeting is where all the clubs within our area get together and plan sailing regattas and various other activities for the entire year. This includes both one design and offshore sailing events. During this time the GYA also conducts its annual sailing awards banquet where sailors and clubs are recognized for their achievements throughout the year. I m proud to announce that GYC won three awards this year which includes 1 st place in the Mississippi Capdevielle Challenger Series (Flying Scot); recognized for participating in all 16 Capdevielle Regattas for the 3 rd year in a row, and lastly GYC won the prestigious Race Management award for running a great regatta during Challenge Cup last summer. New Year s Fun with the Commodore

January was a busy month at the club and it s only going to get busier in the coming months! The GYA Winter Meeting, held at the club on January 9-10, was a great success, with approximately 100 persons registered from throughout the GYA. At the Awards Banquet, the GYC received the GYA Race Management Award for its work at the Challenge Cup. Congratulations to John Morrow, Michael Hage and all the others who were involved in this effort. Also, the club was recognized for being one of the five clubs, out of the 32 GYA clubs, who fielded a team for all 16 Capdevielle events. Great job. We did have some damage from the recent record low temperatures during early to mid-january. Some pipe coming into the club and on the docks and piers, along with a number of plants, were damaged and had to be replaced. Speaking of docks and piers, there are 18 slips available of various sizes. If interested, please call Gary Robinson, docks and piers chairman. This month kicks off the Taste of the Town series of dinners, which you can find out more about in the Log Sheet. This will be a great opportunity for our members to experience cuisine from other restaurants here on the Coast, served by our staff in a comfortable setting. If you ve missed the last two Saints football parties, you have an opportunity to make up for it by coming to the Super Bowl Sunday Spectacular. (That feels good, saying Saints and Super Bowl in the same sentence!). The entertainment committee, junior activities committee, and the staff have a Super party planned that you don t want to miss. It will be followed a week later by Mardi Gras Madness and Valentine s Day Brunch. I told you it s going to get busier!
