Green s Top 10 Wines for 2017 The Top 10 wines of 2017 are presented here-the 28th Anniversary of the Top 10. I must say the year has gone by in a hurry! The selections range from customer favorites-the Calling Chardonnay, Le dome du Grand Cotes du Rhone and OGV OV Garnacha, just to name a few, which have been best-sellers at for the better part of 2017-to a number of under-the-radar part of 2017 gems that the wine staff all agrees deserve the Top stage. Nonetheless, the wine styles represented here can all be described as classic and true-to-form, and of course all with an impressive level of pedigree; the difference comes down to familiarity. Finally, an eye towards versatile pairing with the spectrum of holiday foods was also a major consideration as we were narrowing down our selections. 1 The Calling Dutton Ranch Chardonnay 2015 It was serendipity that brought Emmy Award winning sports commentator Jim Nantz and wine industry entrepreneur Peter Deutsch together at a restaurant in Greenwich, Connecticut where they were each having dinner with friends. Peter had recently read Jim s book about his father, Always By My Side, and it resonated with him, reminding him of his own relationship with his father. Peter introduced himself that evening. Jim was at the restaurant having dinner with a friend who had contacts in the wine industry and was working on an idea that had been in development for years. Jim had long held a passion for wine and was exploring how to take the next step in becoming involved in the wine business when Peter stopped by the table. As fate would have it, that chance meeting would spawn a friendship and partnership. Theirs has been a hands-on collaboration. Jim and Peter traveled together to California and worked closely with renowned winemaker Marco DiGiulio on every step of the winemaking process, from vineyard to bottle. They also poured themselves into the packaging process, working to capture the essence of the brand in the label design. For Jim and Peter, The Calling is about pursuing a passion, inspiring others, and making a great wine. 2 Intrinsic Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 INTRINSIC was created to help bridge the gap between the agricultural setting where wine grapes are grown and the urban setting where wine is enjoyed. Winemaker Juan Muñoz-Oca, who has had years of experience working with Cabernet Sauvignon as the head winemaker for Columbia Crest in Paterson, Washington, found a passion project in INTRINSIC. Through it, he has been able to explore the raw, yet elegant characteristics of Cabernet Sauvignon in Washington and establish new cutting edge techniques for the wine. The inspiration behind the INTRINSIC label came from urban culture and the similarities between street art and winemaking. Both are reflective of the environment around it and are collaboration between artist and landscape. Muñoz-Oca used this insight and married it with the incredible quality of tannins in Washington State to push the traditional boundaries of Cabernet Sauvignon in the same way street art pushes boundaries of urban aesthetics. By extracting more from the grape skins, our winemaker believed he could impart more layers and depth to the wine. After years of experimentation and trial and error involving extreme extended maceration, INTRINSIC was born. Critical Acclaim- This is a one-of-a-kind wine in the state, with 50% of the wine fermented on skins for nine months and the rest aged in concrete and older oak. Pure red- and blue-fruit aromas are followed by bold fruit flavors and well-integrated tannins, without a trace of oak in sight. It s a completely unique interpretation of the variety, but most importantly, it s delicious. Rated 90 Points-Wine Enthusiast Made from 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc, the impressive 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon offers lots of upfront cassis and spice characteristics as well as medium to full-bodied richness, lots of fruit and a forward, delicious, hard to resist style. It s a big mouthful of Cabernet fruit and done very well. Rated 89 Points-Wine Advocate 3 Cherry Pie Pinot Noir Three Vineyards 2015 Combining three vineyards, (72% Monterey County; 20% Sonoma Coast; 8% Santa Barbara) each in its own distinct AVA, Cherry Pie Pinot Noir showcases the best of each unique flavor profile. The Rodgers Creek Vineyard, located in the Sonoma Coast AVA, rests on a ridge in the Petaluma Wind Gap; a low spot in the Sonoma Coast Range that allows a constant flow of cool air directly from the Pacific Ocean. Well-draining White Rhyolite Volcanic Ash soils allow the earthiness of the Pommard & 777 Clones to shine. The Alta Loma Vineyard is located in the Monterey County AVA, overlooking the Salinas River Valley and planted on Arroyo Seco gravelly loam soil. These sparse, well-drained soils reduce yields, creating rich, concentrated flavors in the fruit. The Los Alamos Vineyard lies tucked into a canyon in Santa Barbara County that leads directly to the Pacific Ocean. The sandy soils, bright sunshine and cool ocean breezes combine to lengthen fruit ripening and extend hang time, resulting in intense aromatics and great acidity.

Cherry Pie defines a winemaking approach and technique created by cult winemaker Jayson Woodbridge whereby a micro fermentation approach is applied to a single-vineyard wine. Each vineyard lot is fermented in open top oak puncheons to allow more complexity and variety in the phenolic, aromatic and flavor components of the wine. This micro-fermentation produces a completely unique representation of the fruit from each vineyard. Critical Acclaim- Deep ruby color; notes of tobacco and mesquite; bright cherry flavors; smooth and balanced, great depth; smooth and clean; generous flavors. Rated 90 Points-The Tasting Panel 4 Cesani Vincenzo - Chianti Colli Senesi 2016 The Cesani Winery is located in the Tuscan hills, in San Gimignano just 20 km from Siena, in one of the most beautiful and fascinating areas of the Tuscany. The Cesani family s story started at the beginning of the 1950s in the splendid Tuscan countryside Today he farm, still run by the family, extends over 19 hectares (approx. 40 acres) and is cultivated principally with the red Sangiovese grapes and the famous white Vernaccia di San Gimignano. The entire family, together with an expert staff of helpers, contributes in the running of the farm, personally overseeing every step of the production in order to ensure the very high quality for which the farm is known and appreciated, the secret of which is the winning combination of constant loving care in the vineyards and modern equipment in the cellars. Even though Vernaccia is the the most famous wine in the area, the Cesani family has become famous all over the world particularly for their red wines, all based on Sangiovese. Tasting Notes- A blend of 80% Sangiovese, 20% Canaiolo, Cilegiolo, Malvasia Nera. Ruby red with bright aromas and flavors of red cherries and crushed strawberries with hints of roasted nuts and sweet spices. A very pleasant soft finish with notes of red berries. Works well with spaghetti and meatballs, veal marsala and chicken parmigana. 5 Ferrari-Carano Fume Blanc 2016 Family-owned and operated since 1985, Ferrari-Carano has been a leading producer of worldclass, nationally acclaimed wines. From a small, 30-acre plot of grapes to the present 20 estate vineyards, Don and Rhonda Carano s success is based on their commitment to quality as well as the dedication of the vineyard and winemaking teams to make the finest wines, vintage after vintage. Ferrari-Carano owns vineyards in six appellations: Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, Russian River Valley, Napa/Carneros, Anderson Valley and Mendocino Ridge. Ferrari-Carano s 2016 Fumé Blanc is a delicious wine with aromas and flavors of grapefruit, pineapple, guava, citrus, lemon grass and a touch of minerality. This wine has bright acidity and crisp freshness from the cool, stainless steel tank fermentation, while the subtle oak character from neutral French oak barrels adds body, complexity and depth. Critical Acclaim- With searing, upfront acidity, this wine takes on a briny character that accents the high-toned lemon zest and melon notes on the palate. Aged only in old French oak and stainless steel, its fruit remains fresh and unencumbered through the finish. Rated 90 Points-Wine Enthusiast

6 Bodegas Virgen de la Sierra OGV Old Garnacha Vines-2015 Hand harvested of Garnacha grape from 70-100 year old vines at a high altitude of 800-1,000 meters. The grapes were de-stemmed and fermented in cement tanks. Malolactic fermentation was also completed in cement. Following fermentation the wine was aged for 6 months in a combination of 50% used French oak barrels and 50% used American oak barrels. Dark ruby color with shades of purple. Sexy and silky palate, spice-accented blackberry and cherry aromas and a brilliant ruby color with violet notes. This distinctly Garnacha wine finishes with excellent length and warm tannins. Rated 91 Points-Robert Parker s Wine Advocate 7 Chateau Vieux Robin, Medoc 2010 The estate of Château Vieux Robin is located about 9 miles north of St Estephe and consists of 20 ha (7500 plants/ha) of vines with an average age of more than thirty years. 60% of the vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, and 35% to Merlot Noir. The rest is divided between Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Grape maturity control is carried out about one month before the estimated date of harvesting. Samples are taken regularly in order to determine when the parcels should be harvested. Thus, Château Vieux Robin is able to harvest a la carte, when the grapes have reached their ideal levels of ripeness. The 2010 vintage is considered one of the best values in the very good 2010 vintage and is drinking perfectly now. It is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot & 2% Cabernet Franc. 80% of the wine is aged in barrel (25% new oak) and 20% of the wine remains in tank to retain the fruit qualities. The wine displays deep black currant fruit along with some damp earth and forest notes intermixed with roasted herbs, licorice, and a touch of oak.

A soft, ripe fleshy blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot exhibits a dark, plum/purple color and a big, sweet kiss of red and black currants intermixed with cedar, roasted herbs and underbrush. It is medium-bodied, fruity and ideal for drinking over the next 4-5 years. Rated 90 Points-Wine Enthusiast This delivers a solid core of anise, blackberry and steeped plum, liberally laced with racy charcoal and backed by a solid, tobacco-filled finish. Offers textbook Bordeaux character, with the added oomph of the vintage. Drink now through 2020. Rated 89 Points-Wine Spectator 8 Amelie Chardonnay (Un-oaked) 2016 Amelie Chardonnay is 100% Chardonnay from the Vin de Pays d Oc, in Languedoc- Roussillon area in France. Languedoc Roussillon is one of the world s most important wine regions, with an annual output which, amazingly, exceeds that of the United States, and which makes up for over a third of France s overall wine production. Languedoc Roussillon is also a hugely important region for wine history, and is widely regarded as probably the first part of France in which grapevines were cultivated, after many were introduced by the ancient Greeks several thousand years ago. The region is renowned around the world for having a dedication to quality which matches the quantity it produces, and the range of wines produced in Languedoc Roussillon is truly impressive, with red, white, dessert and sparkling wines all being made to high levels of excellence within the region. A noted customer favorite of 2017, this is un-oaked, French Chardonnay that delights not only lovers of the style, but surprisingly also those wine drinkers who prefer a level of thoughtful restraint to the wines. Shiny gold in the glass with straw yellow tints. This wine displays aromas of tropical fruit, pineapple, brioche, hazelnuts, lime with hints of vanilla. The taste is rich and creamy with a good balance and long finish with notes of tropical fruit. Rated 91 Points-Wine Enthusiast 9 Domaine du Gouyat Bergerac Malbec-2016 The Dubard family settled as winemakers in the Bergerac region, in the late 70 s. The vineyard is located on calcareous-clay hillsides ideally exposed to sunlight (South South-West). Integrated farming leads to the protection of environment and the expression of terroir personality. It also guarantees an excellent sanitary state of the crop, and thus its final quality. The grapes are night harvested in order to take advantage of low night temperatures. After destemming and crushing, the grapes are directly transferred to stainless tanks on their arrival in the cellar. The temperature is at first maintained rather low (15 C) for a few days, to maximise flavour extraction. The juice then undergoes a short (2 weeks) and rather cool (26 C) fermentation. Such a short maceration run with quite low temperatures preserve the typical aromas of the variety. As soon as the fermentation is finished, the wine is drained to stainless tanks, where the malolactic fermentation and the ageing are carried out.

The Dubard family composed this Malbec cuvée in order to pay tribute to a variety often used in blends in the South West of France but seldom put forward. They like to show the unforgettable personality of Malbec on our soils, that gets off the beaten tracks. This Malbec from France is a different animal than the Mendoza-style wines from Argentina. Less fruity and more savory, this inky, nearly black wine is very tart and savory with firm tannins. There are spice and meat notes, complemented by blackberry and plum fruit. Enjoy with peppercorn steak and sautéed mushrooms. 10 Le Dome du Grand Bois Cotes du Rhone-2016 This Cotes du Rhone is made by the Cave de Rasteau, a co-op founded in 1925, made from vineyards primarily located in the prestigious appellation Rasteau. This area in 2010 was promoted to Cru status, putting it on the same level of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Not bad company! However, this wine is not from the Rasteau district, but sourced from vineyards located just outside the boundaries of this excellent wine-producing AOC. It is a great value though as the quality is not far off its more glamorous neighbor and sells for a fraction of the price. Made from a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Cinsault and 10% Carignan, the wine displays a dark cherry bouquet along with a rich fruit flavor that is quite concentrated, but finishes refreshing. 15% Six Bottle Discount (Mixed or Solid) On All Top Ten Wine Values.
