The fair was organized by Hong Kong Trade Development Council. The permanent venue for the fair is Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) at Wan Chai, Hong Kong. This year, 29 countries participated in the fair. The fair covered commodities like, Bakery Product Beverage (alcoholic) Beverage (non-alcoholic), Health Drink, Coffee Biscuits, Snacks & Confectionery Canned, Frozen & Processed Food Chinese Medicine Convenient & Instant Food Dairy Products Fruit & Vegetables Health, Green & Organic Food Meat & Poultry Rice, Noodle & Pasta Sauces & Seasonings Seafood Sugar & Sweets This is the first time Spices Board India participated in the HKTDC Food Expo, Hong Kong. Our flight landed at the Hong Kong International Airport, Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong at 7:20 am local time. Hong Kong is 2 hours and 30 minutes ahead of India local time. The days were sunny with high relative humidity and the temperature varied from 30 to 35 0 C. After checking into Hotel Ovolo Southside, Wong Chuk Hang Road, Southside, Hong Kong which is about 46 km away from the airport, we proceeded to HKTDC at Wan Chai, and did the required stall arrangements. Hong Kong- Brief History: The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (Chinese: Mandarin Pinyin: Xiānggǎng; Jyutping: Hoeng gong, literally "Fragrant Port") is one of two Special Administrative Regions (SARs) of the People's Republic of China (the other is Macau). It is one of the richest and most highly developed places in China and even in the world. Hong Kong grew quickly in the decades after World War II. It is now a famous world class financial center. The population of Hong Kong is more than seven million. The economy has rapidly grown from a trading port to a very rich city.

Hong Kong is divided into 3 main parts: Hong Kong Island Kowloon New Territories (including 235 outlying islands) Hong Kong was a British colony from 1842 to 1997 because China lost the Second Opium War. After the handover in 1997, Hong Kong became a part of China. Population and language The population of Hong Kong reached 7 million in 2009. Most of the people in Hong Kong are Chinese. Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. It has an overall density of 6,300 people per square kilometre. Hong Kong has one of the world s lowest birth rates, 11 per woman of child-bearing age as of 2012. People from Hong Kong mainly speak Cantonese. Many learn English as an additional language. Ever since Hong Kong became a part of China, the number of people who speak Mandarin has increased because Mandarin is the official language of the PRC. Currency There are coins from 10 cents to 10 Hong Kong dollars; and bank-notes (paper money bills) from $10 to $1000. One American dollar is equal to about $7.3173 in Hong Kong Dollars, at the official bank exchange rate. Administration The Chief Executive is the head of Region and head of government of Hong Kong. The Basic Law designates a system of governance led by a Chief Executive and an Executive Council, with a two-tiered system of semi-representative government and an independent judiciary. The Chief Executive is elected by an Election Committee, an 1200-member electoral college consisting of individuals and bodies (i.e. special interest groups) elected within 28 functional constituencies defined in the Basic Law. The winner is then appointed to the position by the Premier of the People's Republic of China. The Chief Executive is responsible for implementing the Basic Law, signing bills and budgets, promulgating laws, making decisions on government policies and issuing Executive Orders. He is assisted in policy making by the Executive Council.

India Hong Kong Bilateral Relation: Relations between Hong Kong and India date back to the 1840s when both countries were British colonies. Trade relations between Hong Kong and India were established shortly after the British gained control of Hong Kong in 1841. The Commission for India in Hong Kong was opened in 1951. The mission was renamed as the Consulate General of India on 15 October 1996, in preparation for the transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to China on 1 July 1997. Since 1999, the consulate is also concurrently accredited to Macau. Hong Kong and India signed an agreement on reciprocal enforcement of judgements in 1968. The Indian Government re-notified the agreement in July 2012, to account for changes in the nomenclature of Hong Kong courts following the transfer of sovereignty. The two countries signed an Air Services Agreement in 1996, and an MoU on air services agreements in February 2012. Hong Kong and India signed a customs co-operation agreement and an agreement on surrender of fugitive Offenders in 1997, an agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters in September 2009, an agreement on transfer of sentenced persons on 20 January 2015. There have been several high-level visits between the two. Chief Executive of Hong.Kong Donald Tsang led a business delegation to India in October 2010. CY Leung was the first Chief Executive to make an official visit to India. At the invitation of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Leung led a 40 member business delegation to India on 2 5 February 2016. He held bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, and Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj, and also addresses events organised by the Indian and Hong Kong chambers of commerce. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel and Telangana Chief Minister KCR Rao made visits to Hong Kong in 2016 ICGS Sarang made a goodwill visit to Hong Kong in August 2015, and ICGS Samrat visited the country in October November 2016. Indian Coast Guard officials held talks with officials from the Hong Kong Marine Police and Hong Kong Customs.

Only a few were serious buyers and were specific with their requirements (annex.i). The rest identified themselves as Trading consultants and wanted to import spices from India and export other products to India. The importer M/s.Rich Growmart arranged a meeting with the Indian exporter, M/s. Satvam Nutrifoods Ltd. and officials of Spices Board at Pandam Thai Restuarnt, Tsim Sha Tsui, HK on 18 th Aug.2017 at 7.30 pm. The importer informed that he is willing to import spices from India to Hong Kong as the import is duty free in Hong Kong. The Indian spices were of high demand in Hong Kong, Maccau and China. Also, by doing so, he can cater to the markets of Maccau and China. He was about to struck a business deal with M/s. Satvam Nutrifoods Ltd., Gujarat. To comprehend, most of the enquires were for whole spices followed by their ground form. The most sought after spices were turmeric, ginger, coriander, chilly,

clove, fennel, cumin, black pepper, cinnamon and small cardamom. All of them wanted to import spices/spice products as wholesale packages only rather than as retail packets. We received no enquiries for value added products like essential oils, oleoresins and natural colours. A general enquiry from the common was for curry powder - a mixture of different spices. This product could have a better retail market in Hong Kong as people prefer it to whole spices. Another important enquiry the buyers raised was on the gift pack of Flavourit- Spices of India. They were of the opinion that the packaging was attractive and is ideal choice of a gift. Some traders who are working with cosmetics were impressed by the Flavourit brand of face cream/scrub and bathing soap. A few enquires were on the packaging of spice samples of Flaourit brand. Mr. Ruzbeh Mistry, Marketing Manager, HKTDC and Ms. Peggy Leung, Manager HKTDC also visited the Spices Board India stall and congratulated for participating in the HKTDC Food Expo. The Market survey: Market survey was conducted to study the availability of spices and spice products and to identify the brands and prices on 19 th & 20 th August 2017. We visited the isquare hypermarket situated in Tsim Sha Tsui and Jordan, Hong Kong. Tsim Sha Tsui, according to the people, is the hub of spices in Hong Kong. In the Supermarket, isquare, the spices/spice products were kept in three sections. Five brands of spices/spice products viz., Ducros, 4 Seasons, Mc Cormic, The Spice Hunter and Spice Island were available in the shop. The list of whole spices and spice products along with their prices was collected and compiled and given in Annexure II. We purchased the following spices/spice products. Sl. Presentation of spices at Supermarket, isquare Spices Board India s role in Hong Kong s Spice market: A genuine likeness to the Indian spices in general and a total disregard for the Vietnam spices is observed among the Hong Kong people. To squeeze in Indian exporters, replacing the Vietnam should be Spices Board India s pivotal role for a big entry in the Hong Kong spice market. Hence, a much wider promotional activities are required for seizing the Hong Kong spice market. The following are a few suggestions The board may encourage more participation of Indian spice exporters in other important agriculture related trade fairs in HKTDC. The Board shall organize Indian Spice- Food Fairs in collaboration with the Indian mission there. The board may initiate measure to create awareness among the Indian exporters regarding the spice market potential in Hong Kong. We returned from Hong Kong on 20 th August 2017 and reached CIAL, Kochi on 21 st August 2017 and reported at Spices Board, Kochi on 22 nd August 2017 for completion of the formalities ans preparation and submission of the report.
