YOUR SOURCE FOR QUALITY SEED POTATOES New for 2018! Seven New Potato Varieties! Fall-Planted Flowers Locally Grown! Organic Seed Potatoes and Sweet Potato Slips Garlic, Onion Transplants, and Shallots Cover Crops, Fertilizers, and Soil Inoculants 2018 CATALOG www.mainepotatolady.com

Page 2 2018 Catalog The Maine Potato Lady The Maine Potato Lady 2018 Catalog Page 3 About Us Located in the foothills of Maine, the LaCourse Family Farm, home of The Maine Potato Lady, has been in operation for more than 25 years. Our 100-acre piece was once part of a 560-acre farm that dates back to the 1600s. Our custom-designed and hand-built log home crowns our hill-top farm. We gathered stones from field edges and milled our own lumber to finish the building, which has sheltered our family for many years. We are pleased to live "off the grid," with a solar system to provide electricity. Welcome! HELLO! Welcome to the twelfth annual seed catalog from The Maine Potato Lady. In almost twenty-five years work with seed potatoes, I have become known to many of you as "The Potato Lady." It has been intriguing and inspiring to grow, eat, and share with you the myriad of colors, textures and flavors of the many potato varieties available to us. We have a great selection now, from the "tried and true" varieties grown every year to others that come and go in commercial production. Potatoes are truly a comfort food, but at the same time they are a very nutritious, important staple food in many cultures around the world. Lisbeth Louderback, an archeologist studying the diets of the indigenous peoples from 7000-9000 years ago in the Four Corners Region of Utah, discovered that those early residents had harvested a locally grown potato (Solanum jamesii). This ancient potato was twice as high in protein and calcium and had three times the amount of zinc, iron, and manganese as Solanum tuberosum, the species that we most commonly eat nowadays. The researchers conjecture that these super-nutritious potatoes helped these communities adapt to changing climate and disappearing food sources during the middle Holocene period. Fascinating! So we choose the varieties that do well in our own micro climate, add in other staples such as onions, shallots, leeks and garlic, and keep our gardens diversified to secure our food sources. And don't forget the flowers! NEW THIS SEASON! For 2018, we are delighted to offer a new product line: Fall-planted perennial flowers. Choose from among three peony varieties, an heirloom narcissus, and colchicum. All are certified organic and locally grown! And of course, as always, we have several new potato varieties for you to try! New potato varieties include Natascha, an early-season yellow; Superior, an older white variety that we've loved for years; Red Endeavor from Wisconsin; Vivaldi, a velvet-smooth yellow tuber; and several more. The Maine Potato Lady is a certified organic handler (#0706) through MOFGA Certification Services, LLC. All our seed is untreated. We do not knowingly use or sell any genetically modified plants or organisms (GMOs). Certificate is available on our website. Our south-facing fields are rich with fertile, well-drained silt loam. Our sugar bush produces fabulous maple syrup, and our cedar bog is a special habitat with sphagnum moss and rare pitcher plants. We are privileged to work and live in this rural environment, where deer, moose, turkey, ravens, eagles, and a variety of beautiful trees, plants, and birds are all around us. Page 4 2018 Catalog The Maine Potato Lady The Maine Potato Lady 2018 Catalog Page 5 About Our Certified Seed Most of the seed we offer is produced at family farms with whom we have good working relationships, some for almost twenty-five years. All our potato seed meets the State of Maine's seed certification requirements that establish acceptable tolerances for seed quality. (For more information about certified seed, see "Coming to Terms" on page 20, or download from our website.) Many of our varieties are also certified organic. All our garlic seed has been tested free of the garlic bloat nematode, white rot, and botrytis. Excellent farming practices, attention to detail, and scrupulous adherence to seed certification guidelines (when applicable) set good seed growers apart from the rest. All the farms from which we obtain seed meet our stringent requirements. It is an honor to work with these farmers, and it is a privilege to supply you with their seed. With every order, we provide instructions for immediate inspection and for proper handling, storage, and planting. Failure to inspect your order upon receipt, or failure to follow these instructions or to follow accepted good farming practices may void our guarantee. Because we cannot control these conditions, our liability is limited to the refund of the purchase price or replacement of the product. If you are not satisfied with a product, or if a product is unsound or defective when you receive it, please notify us within 7 days of receipt in order to qualify for a refund or replacement. We are happy to answer your questions or help you in any way we can so you can get the most from your garden! Our Privacy Policy. We respect your privacy. We will never share your personal information or use it for any purpose other than to receive and fill your orders, to provide information on how to use our products, and to send you our catalogs. Our web site, www.mainepotatolady.com, is set up for secure, private transactions. Page 6 2018 Catalog The Maine Potato Lady The Maine Potato Lady 2018 Catalog Page 7 Fingerling Potatoes Prized for their interesting colors and exquisite flavors, fingerling potatoes are highly sought after. They are prolific producers and fairly resistant to disease. All are suitable for use in potato "grow bags" as they will continue to set tubers throughout the season. AUSTRIAN CRESCENT A golden crescentshaped fingerling with deep yellow flesh. The waxy and firm texture is delicious for salads or roasting. This variety is so similar to Banana that the two varieties are almost impossible to tell apart. High yield; good storage. 509AU AUSTRIAN CRESCENT Organic 1# $6.25, 3# $12.75, 10# $37.00, 25# $77.00, 50# $117.00 BANANA With tan skin and dark yellow flesh, Banana is one of our best-known fingerlings. Matures around 85 days with respectable yields. Absolutely delectable steamed and tossed with butter and parsley or in your favorite salad. Resistant to scab, but susceptible to rhizoctonia and late blight. White flowers on medium spreading plant. 510BA BANANA Organic 1# $6.25, 3# $12.75, 10# $37.00, 25# $77.00, 50# $117.00 170BAC BANANA Conventional 50# $100.00 FRENCH FINGERLING Though plumper than most, this potato (also known as "Nosebag") is still considered a fingerling. Radiant rose-red skin and deep yellow flesh with an occasional red ring make this potato stand out. Creamy, smooth texture with exceptional flavor lends itself well to salad with thinly-sliced red onions and chunks of crisp cucumbers. Abundant, long, plump tubers seem to tumble out of the earth. Tall plants with red veining fill the row. 519FFO FRENCH FINGERLING Organic 1# $6.25, 3# $12.75, 10# $37.00, 25# $77.00, 50# $117.00 175FFC FRENCH FINGERLING Conventional 50# $100.00 LARATTE A special fingerling from France very similar to Banana, though a fine net to the tan skin and a nutty flavor to the dark yellow flesh set it apart. Smooth and firm texture. The babies (½"-1") truly melt in your mouth. Fine chefs love this gourmet morsel, and the demand is high. Matures about ten days later than Banana. Resistant to scab and viruses. White flowers top medium-sized plants. 522LA LARATTE Organic 1# $6.25, 3# $12.75, 10# $37.00, 25# $77.00, 50# $117.00 MAGIC MOLLY I do love this name. It conjures up images of beauty and magic, right out of the garden. And when these beauties emerge from the earth, it is like magic. Dark purple skin and purple, almost black flesh are quite vivid. Long tubers are firm and slightly waxy, with an earthy flavor. Good yields and some field resistance to late blight. A seedling of Red Beauty developed by Bill Campbell of Alaska. Organic seed is limited. 525ML MAGIC MOLLY Organic 1# $6.25, 3# $12.75, 10# $37.00, 25# $77.00, 50# $117.00 177ML MAGIC MOLLY Conventional 25# $68.00, 50# $100.00 PAPA CACHO Tall, robust plants with obvious resistance to late blight were still going strong (alongside our German Butterballs) well after most of our other varieties had succumbed to the change of season. What a pleasure to dig when lots of long, bright red fingerlings came up with the fork! Most of the tubers in the hill were 6"-10" long. White flesh occasionally tinged with pink. Fabulous broiled or roasted. A landrace variety originating in Peru. 180PA PAPA CACHO Conventional 1# $5.50, 3# $10.75, 10# $31.00, 25# $68.00, 50# $100.00 NEW! PURPLE PERUVIAN Sure to draw attention anywhere, this tuber is deep dark purple inside and out, with a rather earthy flavor that some really love. Still a little wild, Purple Peruvian has a large rangy plant. Its numerous tubers set far from the plant; be sure to harvest them all to prevent their becoming "volunteers" in next year's crop. Very late; frost tolerant. One customer told us, "While all my other potatoes succumbed to leafhoppers and Colorado Potato Beetles, Peruvians kept on chugging!" 186PP PURPLE PERUVIAN Conventional 1# $5.50, 3# $10.75, 10# $31.00, 25# $68.00, 50# $100.00 Potato Assortments COLORS COLLECTIONS We've assembled two collections with which you may sample the beauty and culinary qualities of our red or blue potatoes. Choose Rosy Reds to enjoy Red Thumb Fingerling, Mountain Rose, and Adirondack Red. Try Royal Blues to sample Magic Molly Fingerling, All Blue, and Purple Majesty. We reserve the right to substitute other varieties as necessary. Each collection contains enough seed pieces for fifteen hills. 1260RR ROSY REDS 5# $19.00 1262BB ROYAL BLUES 5# $19.00 PURPLE AND RED TRIAL COLLECTION Sometimes it's just too hard to choose, and you want to plant them all! We've chosen for you, a collection of six varieties that have a mid-season maturity, similar color profiles, and exceptional eating qualities. So plant them all! Watch them grow! Record their growing characteristics. And yes, TASTE TEST THEM! Submit your results and receive a $10 RED THUMB Dug as small "babies," these bright red-skinned thumbs of delicacy have beautiful dark pink flesh. Pleasing flavor and firm flesh is perfect for roasting with olive oil and rosemary, then caramelizing. Serve with your favorite steak and salad. An interesting fingerling for the specialty market. Very productive small- to medium-sized plant. 528RT RED THUMB Organic 1# $6.25, 3# $12.75, 10# $37.00, 25# $77.00, 50# $117.00 ROSE FINN APPLE Rose-blushed beige skin and deep yellow flesh with occasional airplanes or second growth distinguish this very fine fingerling. This potato's exquisite flavor and cooking qualities set it apart. Tubers set near the surface, so hill well to prevent greening and frost damage. Maintain fertility and water carefully. Matures mid- to late season. A medium-spreading plant. 530RF ROSE FINN APPLE Organic 1# $6.25, 3# $12.75, 10# $37.00, 25# $77.00, 50# $117.00 discount on your next order. A collection contains five tubers each of Adirondack Red, Harvest Moon, Masquerade, Pinto Gold, Purple Sun, and Purple Viking, plus a Trial Recording Form and SASE. Please read the description for each variety for more information. Each collection includes enough seed to plant 30 row feet. We reserve the right to substitute other varieties as necessary. 1270PR PURPLE AND RED TRIAL COLLECTION 6# $25.00 TOWERING TATER MEDLEY This collection is the perfect choice for those of you using grow bags or towers or growing in a small space. Each medley contains three varieties: one fingerling and two late-season varieties. We will choose the varieties for you. Enough to plant approximately four containers with three seed pieces each, or 12 row ft. 1265TT TOWERING TATER MEDLEY (approx. 12 tubers) 3# $11.00

Page 8 2018 Catalog The Maine Potato Lady The Maine Potato Lady 2018 Catalog Page 9 Early Potatoes (55-70 DAYS) AC CHALEUR A really nice early white variety released from Canada in 1993. I was introduced to this variety almost 20 years ago and was enchanted with the smooth round white tubers and the suave creaminess of its eating quality. I remember eating them steamed with butter, salt, and some rosemary. High yielding with resistance to common scab. Vines are medium-spreading with white flowers. 205AC AC CHALEUR Conventional 2.5# $5.25, 5# $10.25, 10# $18.00, 20# $22.00, 50# $38.00 BLAZER RUSSET An early-maturing russet with attractive smooth skin and excellent culinary qualities. Plants emerge quickly and set 9-11 tubers in the middle of the hill. Resistant to common and powdery scab, hollow heart, and growth cracks. Moderately resistant to early blight and late blight. A large root system gives the plant some drought tolerance. Large, upright vine with few white flowers. 215BZ BLAZER RUSSET Conventional 2.5# $5.25, 5# $10.25, 10# $18.00, 20# $22.00, 50# $38.00 BORA VALLEY A beautiful dark purple potato with mostly purple flesh gives us another uniquelycolored potato. Long, oval smooth-skinned tubers mature early, with high yields. Grows well under diverse conditions. Great for roasting and steaming, it retains its color beautifully. Resistant to soft rot and leaf blight. Good storage. Medium spreading plant with profuse light purple flowers. 532AV BORA VALLEY Organic 2.5# $7.75, 5# $11.75, 10# $22.00, 20# $38.00, 50# $70.00 219RV BORA VALLEY Conventional 50# $38.00 CARIBE Developed in Canada, Caribe is very early, ready to be dug in just 70 days. An elegant potato with brilliant dark blue skin. Superb creamy-white flesh makes the fluffiest mashed potatoes. Purplish blue flowers top this medium-sized plant. 535BC CARIBE Organic 2.5# $10.90, 5# $16.20, 10# $32.00, 20# $50.00, 50# $98.00 CHIEFTAN Always popular, this early-to-midseason red-skinned variety offers high yields and good eating qualities. Expect a large set of round, bright red tubers with nice white flesh. Stores well. Resistant to scab and tuber net necrosis; field resistant to late blight. Medium-spreading plant with large, light violet flowers. 538CH CHIEFTAN Organic 2.5# $10.75, 5# $16.00, 10# $30.00, 20# $48.00, 50# $90.00 224HF CHIEFTAN Conventional 20# $16.10, 50# $24.50 COBBLER Many years ago on a summer eve while visiting one of our family seed potato growers, we were served freshly-dug Cobblers, golf ball size, boiled and tossed with butter, salt, and parsley. Oh, scrumptious! The potatoes were good and so was the company, making for a memorable meal. A selection from Early Rose believed to have been discovered by an Irish shoemaker in the late 1800s, Cobbler has round, buff-skinned tubers with white flesh that's a little mealy, perfect for soaking up plenty of butter. Early maturing and exceptional eating qualities keep this variety in the seed trade. Resistant to blackleg and fusarium storage rot; immune to wart. Medium-spreading plant with lilac, white-tipped flowers. 226CB COBBLER Conventional 2.5# $4.50, 5# $7.60, 10# $11.70, 20# $16.10, 50# $24.50 COLORADO ROSE With Cherry Red as one of its parents, Colorado Rose was bred for high yield and early bulking. Attractive oval red tubers with white flesh are great for those early summer salads or roasting. Resistant to hollow heart, second growth, and bruising. Potato and Rutabaga Soup with Bacon When the weather changes and the night comes on earlier, it's time for soups! This hearty soup will warm you up after an afternoon in the garden. Tangy-sweet rutabagas add a little crunch and complement the subtle smokiness of the bacon. I've suggested the varieties of garlic, onion, and potato that I like to use in this soup, but try your own favorites, too! 1 pound bacon (locally raised if possible) 1 medium onion, chopped (Cortland or Stuttgarter) 2-3 cloves garlic, chopped (German Red or Georgian Fire) 4-5 cups potatoes, scrubbed and cubed (approximately 2#)(Purple Sun, Reddale, or Katahdin) 2 cups rutabaga, peeled and cubed Water or vegetable or chicken stock, enough to cover 1 teaspoon dried thyme or 1 branch of fresh thyme Salt and pepper to taste Grated Romano or sliced Cheddar cheese for garnish Cook the bacon in your soup pot just until it is crisp. While the bacon is cooking, prepare the vegetables. Remove the bacon from the pot, drain, and set aside. Remove all but 2-3 tablespoons of bacon fat from the pot, add the onion and garlic, and sauté just until translucent. Add the potato and rutabaga, sauté for 5 minutes, then add water or stock to cover. If you are using fresh thyme, add it now. Bring the soup to a boil, reduce heat, then cover and simmer for 20 minutes or until the rutabagas are tender. Stir occasionally; adding more water or stock as needed. Cut up the bacon into large pieces. When the rutabagas and potatoes are tender, add the bacon and (if using) dried thyme to the pot; season with salt and pepper to taste. If you used fresh thyme, remove the branch. Garnish with the Romano or Cheddar cheese. Serve with hot cornbread. Serves 6 generously. Ask Alison Q. My beds are 4 feet by 12 feet. How much seed potato do I need? A. Generally, seed potatoes are planted 10"-12" apart in rows 24"-36" apart. For a four-foot wide bed, mark two rows 24" apart evenly spaced from the edge of the bed. Two 12-foot rows add up to 24 row feet. As shown in the chart on page 10, for 25 row feet you will need 5 pounds of seed potato. Use 2-ounce seed pieces (each about the size of a hen's egg). Please read the "Growing Potatoes Successfully" guide that is included with your order and available on our website. Q. Can I eat any seed potatoes I don't plant? A. Certified seed potatoes that are also certified organic have been grown without the use of chemicals and are perfectly safe to eat. Certified seed potatoes that are conventionally grown have had chemical insecticides and fungicides applied while being grown; this is the same as conventional potatoes that are sold for human consumption. The seed potato itself is not treated after it is harvested. Please use your own judgment.

Dark red smooth skin on oblong to round tubers with white flesh. Though Red Pontiac is susceptible to second growth and hollow heart, the yield and storage qualities still make it a good choice. With its large set and early bulking, some growers may find this variety useful for new potatoes. These spuds get huge; plant a little closer (8"-10") to control size. Large spreading plant has light purple flowers with white tips. 340RP RED PONTIAC Conventional 2.5# $4.50, 5# $7.60, 10# $11.70, 20# $16.10, 50# $24.50 Coming to Terms Organic or Certified Organic Both of these terms refer only to products that have been produced on a farm that meets the standards established by the National Organic Program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The farm must comply with USDA/NOP regulations and pass an inspection by an approved accredited certifying agency. Production practices must enhance the health of the farm. No synthetic inputs are allowed. Conventional In conventional agriculture, synthetic inputs (fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides) are used to produce the highest yields and maximize profits. There are good conventional growers who use crop rotation and integrated pest management to minimize their use of synthetic inputs. The Maine Potato Lady offers products from some carefully-selected conventional growers. Sustainable Sustainability is a principle by which farmers use sound farming practices to meet their needs in the present while consciously sustaining and preserving resources for future generations. Sustainability encompasses three areas: land and natural resources stewardship; plant and animal STRAWBERRY PAW (a.k.a. NY 136) Latematuring round flattened tuber with dark red skin and white flesh. Natural and renewable inputs are used as much as possible, with synthetic inputs used very little or not at all. Certified Potato Seed A rigorous certification and inspection process (distinct from organic certification) ensures that seed potato meets standards for freedom from diseases or pests. All the potato seed sold by The Maine Potato Lady is certified by the state in which it is grown. Our products must also meet the certification requirements of the State of Maine Department of Agriculture. During the growing season, each lot is field inspected three times for specific pests and diseases. A 400-tuber sample, taken at harvest time, is grown out in Florida during the winter, then visually inspected for viruses and for variety purity. In order to be designated as Certified Seed, the sample must show 5% or less total virus. Certification is not complete until the winter grow-out inspection has been finalized (usually at the end of January). Certification represents only that the seed potatoes were inspected and certified in accordance with the state regulations. Page 26 2018 Catalog The Maine Potato Lady The Maine Potato Lady 2018 Catalog Page 27 Soils Are Alive! Our soils are alive! Feed our soils; feed ourselves! We are pleased to offer a selection of cover crops, fertilizers, and microorganisms to help you develop a rich, healthy soil in which to grow nutritious crops. COVER CROPS & GREEN MANURES Green manure or "plow down" crops can add substantial amounts of enriching biomass or organic matter to the soil as well as improve carbon sequestration by enhancing soil structure. As this matter feeds the soil organisms, they in turn break down the organic matter and release a wealth of nutrients to feed the next crop. Cover crops protect against erosion, holding together all that precious topsoil that we have worked hard to build up. BUCKWHEAT With its wide, heart-shaped leaves and rapid growth, buckwheat is the best green manure crop for weed suppression. Buckwheat is also widely used for building worn-out soils, as it accumulates phosphorous, potassium, calcium, and nitrogen, making all these nutrients available to the next crop. Its fibrous root system improves soil aeration and friability, encouraging earthworm activity. Plant after danger of frost, or plant as a late summer or fall cover crop 40-60 days before the first frost; leave it to winterkill, then plant directly into it in the spring. Seed at 45-90#/acre or 2#/1000 sq. ft. 902BK BUCKWHEAT Organic 2# $5.50, 5# $11.00, 25# $46.00, 50# $82.00 DEEP TILL RADISH One of the brassica family, forage or daikon radish is becoming popular as a cover crop, primarily for its ability to break up hardpan and improve water infiltration with its large roots. With rapid fall growth, the radish plant is excellent at scavenging nitrogen and releasing it quickly in the spring upon decomposition. Quick emergence and fast ground cover helps smother weeds. Will winterkill below 25 F. Seed at 15-20#/acre or ½#/1000 sq. ft. 905DR DEEP TILL RADISH Organic ½# $8.00, 2# $14.50, 10# $74.00, 25# $166.00, 50# $255.00 MUSTARD When incorporated into the soil, mustards release chemical agents called glucosalinates which suppress soil-borne pathogens and pests (fungi, nematodes, and some weeds). Fast-growing, it can produce up to 8,000 lb. of biomass per acre. With a 2-6 foot taproot, mustard is an efficient nutrient recycler, bringing nitrogen and other nutrients up into the top several feet of the soil profile. We are pleased to offer two Mighty Mustard varieties: WhiteGold (actively suppresses weeds) and Pacific Gold (active against insects, nematodes, and fungal pathogens). They are verified non-gmo by the Non- GMO Project (www.nongmoproject.org). Plant in September for late October incorporation, or in the spring as soon as you can work the soil. Mow or chop before incorporation to rupture cell walls and better release the glucosalinates. Will winterkill below 25 F. Seed at 15-20#/acre or ½#/1000 sq. ft. 907MM MIGHTY MUSTARD WHITEGOLD Sustainable NON-GMO ½# $8.00, 2# $14.50, 10# $69.00, 25# $160.00, 50# $220.00 908MM MIGHTY MUSTARD PACIFIC GOLD Sustainable NON-GMO ½# $8.00, 2# $14.50, 10# $69.00, 25# $160.00, 50# $220.00 OATS Very fast growing, oats smother weeds almost as effectively as buckwheat, especially when planted with bell beans or field peas. Oats provide large amounts of organic matter and are excellent as a nurse crop for legumes and grasses, providing weed control and winter protection. Because they winterkill, they are great for gardeners; the plant residue may be worked into the soil easily, or other crops can be planted directly into it. Sow oats any time, from spring (as soon as the soil can be worked) right up until the end of September. Plant at a rate of 100#/acre or 3#/1000 sq. ft. 915OT OATS Organic 2# $4.00, 5# $6.00, 25# $25.00, 48# $42.00 WINTER RYE An excellent catch crop as it has an extensive root system and is very efficient at taking up soluble nutrients left by previous crops. Rye provides a large amount of organic matter and has alleopathic effects on weeds. Very hardy and winters over consistently, germinating and growing at 40 F and surviving down to -33 F. Seed from mid-august to mid-october alone or with hairy vetch at 90-160#/acre or 4#/1000 sq. ft. 926RY WINTER RYE Organic 2# $4.00, 5# $6.25, 25# $28.00, 56# $51.00 BELL BEANS Also known as fava bean or horse bean, this is the small-seeded variety used for green manure crops. A cool season annual that originated in the Mediterranean, this plant has wonderfully lush, fleshy leaves on thick straight stalks, 2-5 feet tall. Tolerates a wide range of soils. Will fix 70-220#/acre of nitrogen and provides loads of organic matter. A densely planted crop provides good weed control. Bell beans do well intercropped with oats or barley, and provide the legume green manure crop to rotate with garden peas and beans, as they are not from the same family. Turn under when plants first flower, or cut first, allow to wilt, then till under. Hardy to 25 F. Seed at 125-200#/ acre or 5#/1000 sq. ft. 935BB BELL BEANS Conventional 2# $6.50, 5# $12.25, 25# $47.00, 50# $78.00 FIELD PEAS Plant this legume with oats for a real soil-building crop. The grains provide ample biomass, as well as stalks for the peas to climb, and the peas provide nitrogen. Field pea residues decompose rapidly, contributing up to 1.7 tons of dry matter and 100 pounds of nitrogen per acre. Field peas like cool moist growing conditions and are frost-tolerant once established. Seed at 70-160#/acre or 4#/1000 sq. ft. 948FP FIELD PEAS Organic 2# $6.00, 5# $8.00, 25# $35.00, 50# $61.00 HAIRY VETCH A hardy legume usually planted with rye to overwinter and plow in in the spring. Vigorous growth suppresses weeds, but large plants can be a problem to mow or plow. Turn under when the rye is 8"-12" tall or 2 weeks before planting the next crop. Vetch supplies 60-140#/acre of nitrogen and 4500#/acre of biomass, depending on its maturity when it is turned under. Its succulent vines decompose rapidly. Seed at 20-40#/acre or 1#/1000 sq. ft. 951HV HAIRY VETCH Organic 1# $7.00, 2# $12.00, 10# $45.00, 50# $195.00 MEDIUM RED CLOVER A versatile short-lived perennial clover that makes nutritious hay or pasture and can be used as a cover or green manure crop, providing the nitrogen for the next season s crop. Plant in late summer or frost seed in early spring (February or March) to provide up to 100#/ acre of nitrogen and cover through the summer. Tolerates shade and dry conditions when getting established; forms taproots that help prevent soil compaction. Does better in acidic soils than alfalfa. Red clover supports beneficial insects including lady beetles, green lacewing larvae, and hover flies. Seed at 10#/acre alone or 6#/acre mixed with oats. Frost seed at 15-20#/acre or ½#/1000 sq. ft. Pre-inoculated with N-Tex (OMRI). 955MR MEDIUM RED CLOVER Organic ½# $7.00, 2# $14.25, 10# $70.00, 25# $138.00, 50# $205.00

Page 28 2018 Catalog The Maine Potato Lady The Maine Potato Lady 2018 Catalog Page 29 SOIL-BUILDING MIXES Plant a mix of grains and legumes to boost production of biomass, to form more soil organic matter, and to suppress weeds more effectively than either crop will do alone. The grain stalks provide support for the vine-like legumes, while the grains' roots improve topsoil crumb structure. The deep legume taproots open the subsoil, enhancing drainage, bringing up minerals, and fixing nitrogen from the air. MPL BIODIVERSITY CROP MIX The diversity of the plants above the ground directly affects the diversity and of the biological health of the soil below. We've put together a mix of diverse species that promotes life in the soil and increases crop productivity. This mixture also contains fish meal to increase nitrogen and water-soluble humic acids to aid the soil microorganisms in converting the nitrogen into a useable form of protein.
