Issue 17 - SY 2017-18 15 December 2017 Head s corner.. Happy Holidays! I would like to take the opportunity of this last newsletter of 2017 to wish you all a very happy holiday season and my wish for you all to enjoy 2018 as a positive and productive new year. Warm regards to the OSC families who are transitioning away from the school. It has been a pleasure to have you and your children as a part of our community of teaching and learning and I wish you the best as you move to your next location and school. Please know that we consider all students who have attended OSC for any length of time to be alumni of OSC. Those of you who will be returning for our second semester, please note that our business office will be open during the vacation except for Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th December from 8.00 am to 3.00 pm. We welcome our students to return for the first full day of classes on Monday January 8. Phil Joslin Head of School pjoslin@osc.lk
Page 2 CANTEEN LUNCH ACCOUNT SYSTEM Our school has recently expanded on our canteen lunch account system based off parent feedback that I would like to give you a bit more information. Sweets / Snacks Currently, any student can purchase anything offered on the menu. However, some parents may not want their son/daughter to be purchasing items that would be classified as a snack or desert. Parents may request for their children to have a restriction placed on their lunch account so that they cannot ring up any type of food item that has this classification. Students will still be able to purchase normal food items such as the international lunch buffet or ala carte food menu options. Negative Balances By default, a student may use their badge ID to charge food items that may result in a negative canteen food balance. Reports are sent out at the end of each month that informs parents of their child s food transaction items as well as their current canteen lunch account balance. Parents may request for this negative balance option to be disabled. Disabling this feature would make it so that a student cannot charge food that would create a negative lunch account balance. To have either of these changes applied, please contact: primaryoffice@osc.lk or secondaryoffice@osc.lk Please remember to include the full name of your child and their current grade level. POOL CLOSURE DETAILS DURING THE DECEMBER VACATION Open 10am 4pm during the first week of the holiday, but will close at 4pm on Friday 22 nd December and re-open at 10am on Tuesday 2 nd January
Page 3 Secondary School Principal The end of the term is here, assessments are completed, presentations given and we are ready for the holidays. individuals and we hope that they will aim to continue their work. Our final act of the year is our Secondary Assembly in which we will celebrate the many service activities that our students have been involved in. Whilst we of course provide support and value to the groups we work with I think the people who gain the most through these activities are our students. Service should never be looked upon as some kind of benevolent action towards others but as an important part of being human, as Gandhi said The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. I also am reminded of the words of one of my favorite teenage authors, Douglas Adams, who said To give real service you must add something which cannot be bought or measured with money, and that is sincerity and integrity. We hope that as our students meet their various service requirements, these attributes continue to develop and they see beyond the act of giving to recognize what they gain from the experience themselves. In today s assembly the following groups will be sharing their experiences: Middle School SGA, DHE, Girls for Girls Video, Care for Paws, RCCI, Housing and Habitat, Temple School, SOS Village, Reef Keepers, Recycling and Sustainability, Gecko Net Video. All will have had very different experiences in areas that are meaningful to them as Joining in our celebrations we will share some musical accomplishments too. The classical guitar ensemble, directed by Mr Perera will be playing a piece by JS Bach and our Boys Voice group will share a surprise act. Ms Duncan will also be performing a solo as she has discovered a new musical talent this week when she learned how to play the bananas during our faculty introduction to the new Maker Space technology. It is sure to be a memorable rendition of a Christmas favorite! I do hope that everyone enjoys a peaceful and happy holiday. Looking forward to seeing you in 2018! Page 4 Primary School Principal Reports Your child s Semester 1 report is now ready for viewing in ManageBac. You should have received an email with a link to the report. Please follow the instructions from the email to download and/or view the report. I have also sent an email with instructions of how to view your report directly through ManageBac. If either of these methods do not work, please contact the Primary Office and we will assist with the process. Class Support Parents I would like to personally thank our team of Primary support parents for the tremendous work you have done this semester. Your participation and effort with the Primary Production was a fantastic help and support for our teachers, as well as, the time and energy you have put forth arranging our class parties. At times, I m sure you feel you have volunteered for a thankless job, but please know that your work, time and effort is noticed and appreciated. Thank-you Lost & Found Primary s Lost & Found has shifted location. You will now find the Lost & Found outside of the canteen, beside the fish tank. We will be donating unclaimed / unmarked items at the end of each month in order to manage this space. Primary Playground The Primary Playground will be closed off for the duration of the holiday. We are in the process of replacing the play structures and anticipate completion at the start of school. Have a lovely, safe and happy holiday. See you back on January 8, 2018! Regards, Jason Grandbois Primary School Principal jgrandbois@osc.lk
Page 5 I & S - Grade 7 Field trip to a Bio mass Plant Last week, December 4th, Grade 7 went on a field trip to a biomass processing plant. When we got to the biomass plant we were greeted by Mr. Jayanath, the owner of the Bio mass plant in Homagama. He showed us around the plant and answered our questions. While we were at the plant, we learned about the suppliers of the wood and how they counteract deforesting by only buying wood from private suppliers who do things like trim trees they also collect fallen trees that were uprooted by storms. While we were there we learned how the wood is processed in to fine chips for use in giant furnaces to generate electricity. James Keshap Grade 7
