DID YOU KNOW... Opened in April 1938 as a civil airport, with commercial service by TWA starting in 1941, Reading Municipal Airport became the Reading Army Air Base in 1943, home to the U.S. Army Air Force s 1st Air Force. The facility served as a training facility for those being deployed to Europe for combat in World War II. In 1944 the base became Air Technical Service Command, with the mission of repairing the combat-damaged aircraft and returning them to service. (A mural depicting a scene from the base can be seen on the wall at the bar.) The 309th Air Base Squadron was re-designated the 85th Army Air Force Base Unit, and following victory in Europe the base was inactivated and designated an Air Force Reserve Base, while also serving as a training site for TWA international flight crews. The current terminal was constructed in 1961, and the aircraft maintenance meetings which began in the 1950 s grew into the Reading Air Show, at one time the second largest aircraft show in the world. While the airport no longer offers general commercial flights, it continues to operate with private and chartered flights, including Boscov s charter trips to Orlando. The Mid-Atlantic Air Museum (across the runways from the terminal) has hosted its annual World War II Weekend since 1990, and features many rare military and commercial aircraft. The museum is open seven days a week from 9:30am-4pm.
