Welcome to Afternoon Tea at DUKES A Majestic and Historical Home in St James s 1908-2018 The historical courtyard at DUKES St. James s Place can been traced back to 1532 when King Henry VIII bought a convent at the bottom of the hill. In its place he built St. James s Palace as a hunting lodge and refuge from the feckless gossip which pervaded court life at the Palace of Whitehall. The Palace was also an ideal setting for King Henry s secret meetings with Anne Boleyn, who later became his second wife and was then subsequently beheaded. St. James s Palace was the birthplace of King George IV and the venue for seven royal weddings, and it was here that Bloody Mary died, and King Charles I lived prior to his execution. British monarchs are still proclaimed from its balcony and foreign ambassadors are accredited to the Court of St. James s. The Palace remained a royal residence until the mid-19th century when Queen Victoria then made Buckingham Palace her home. During Charles II s five-year reign from 1660, St. James s Place became highly fashionable and elegant coffee houses sprang up around the area of the hotel. These coffee houses were forerunners of today s gentlemen s clubs, three of which are still located in St. James s. It s documented that during this time, the courtyard around DUKES led to the house occupied by Barbara Villiers. The Duchess of Cleveland, one of the King s mistresses, bore the King three sons the Dukes of Cleveland, Grafton and Northumberland. After the King s death, the courtyard was known as Cleveland Court and the two houses which it contained formed a small inn. These buildings were demolished in 1885 and replaced with the building originally utilised as the London Chambers for the sons of Britain s aristocracy until it became DUKES in 1908. St James s Place has, in the past, been home to many famous writers, musicians, bankers and politicians Lord Byron and Oscar Wilde wrote there, Chopin lived there while in London for his last performance and Sir Edward Elgar always stayed in the DUKES apartments when he was in the city for concerts.

Teas & Herbal Infusions Sourced by The East India Company Black Tea The East India Company Granted a Royal Charter by Queen Elizabeth I in 1600, The East India Company was established to explore the mysteries of the East. The result was the discovery of new and exotic goods including teas, spices and coffees. The Company's first tea arrived in London in the 1600 s. Legend has it that in 1664, the directors presented a gift of tea to King Charles II and his Portuguese Queen, Catherine of Braganza. With a love for tea that started while growing up in her homeland, Catherine introduced the pleasures of drinking these remarkable leaves to the English royal court, starting a culture that is today in the heart of Britain. From the 17th to the 19th century, The East India Company were the sole importer of tea to England, supplying the finest leaves from China and then India in the 19th century when the very first harvest in Assam and Darjeeling was successful. These teas made their way onboard the company East Indiamen and Tea Clippers, travelling thousands of miles to reach the company docks in East London, before making their last miles to the sociable coffee house of St James s. It was only fitting that we would continue this legacy by sourcing the finest teas for DUKES today. From the misty Himalayan foothills to the Sri-Lankan rainforests and the volcanic lands of the Pacific come flavourful oolongs, muscatel Darjeelings, brisk Assams, fragrant green and white teas. Each are attentively developed and curated by the Company s Tea Master. From the evergreen shrub camellia sinensis, more commonly known as tea bush, two leaves and a bud are hand-plucked before going through a meticulous process of oxidisation and fermentation. The result is a wide variety of flavours and aromas that are much dependant on the environment. From malty Assam to floral Sri Lankan Orange Pekoe, there is a tea to please every palate. Dukes Royal Breakfast, India And Sri Lanka A strong English Breakfast tea, blended to provide a rich and malty brew. This blend has teas selected from the misty hills of Ceylon, known for their brightness and floral notes, and from the lush estates of Assam to bring out malty and rich characters. Dukes Blend, Sri Lanka And China A distinct aromatic blend of black teas with citrus notes balanced with a gentle smokiness. Royal Flush, Sri Lanka In 1954, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip made their first state visit to Ceylon. Our Royal Flush Black Tea is harvested from bushes propagated from the original bush planted by HRH Prince Philip during this visit. This beautifully balanced Orange Pekoe grows at the high altitudes from an estate in the Nuwara Eliya region. The result is a bright cup that is delicate with exquisite notes of caramel. First Romance, Sri Lanka A colorful selection of delicious fruits and flower petals, brought together to create a very special fruity tea. Sweet exotic flavors will delight your senses and stir the excitement of a first romance. The Campbell Darjeeling, Second Flush, India From the beautiful Namring Tea Estate in the Himalayan foothills of Darjeeling comes our Second Flush. A light and fragrant black tea, famed for its distinct muscatel character. Harvested during the warm summer months, this tea offers floral, fruity and light earthy notes with a touch of pleasant astringency. Ideal to accompany your afternoon tea and best enjoyed without milk.

Decaffeinated Breakfast, Sri Lanka Bright and well-balanced, this naturally decaffeinated Ceylon stays true to the traditions and flavours of this famous tea country. The Staunton Earl Grey, Sri Lanka Using an authentic recipe, first described by The East India Company s officer, George Staunton, in the 1700s in China, this tea blends the finest Neroli and Bergamot oils to create a distinct Earl Grey. With an exceptional aroma and flavour profile that is light, sweet, floral and delicate, this tea produces a deliciously fragrant cup. Traditional Karak, Sri Lanka Fragrant ginger and a blend of natural spices of peppercorn, cardamom and cloves give this strong black tea intense and warming flavours. Green Tea Known for their well-being quality and source of anti-oxidants, green teas are unoxidized and unfermented leaves following a process of high heat by usually steaming in Japan and pan-frying in China. There are thousands of green teas to be enjoyed with characters that vary from grassy and seaweed to sweet and nutty. Dragonwell Lung Ching, China Named after the Dragon Well village in Hangzhou, this variety of green tea was once a favourite of the Chinese emperor Kang Xi in the 1600 s. Pressed and fired in a wok, this refreshingly sweet and delicate tea has a pale yellow liquor unlike any other. Saemidori Sencha, Japan Sencha, or new tea, is made from the first harvest or flush of spring, full of nutrients developed over their dormancy period in winter. With grassy and vegetal notes, our Sencha is an ideal tea to revitalise your mind. Jasmine Pearls, China Beautiful in form and fragrance, each pearl is individually crafted by rolling the high grade white needle green tea leaves naturally scented using fresh Jasmine flowers. The harmony between fresh aromatic jasmine and the soft creamy notes of young tea buds produces a gentle and fragrant green tea. White Tea Made from only the buds, our white tea is hand-picked and left to dry naturally. Being the least processed of teas, these remarkable silvery leaves are known for their delicate, floral and sometime sweet flavour. Snow White, Nepal Originating from the Himalayan foothills, the twisted and downy leaves are harvested during the last frosts at the beginning of spring. When brewed, it delivers a light and mellow cup with delicate sweet and floral notes. Blend 68 Tropical Punch A delicate white tea blended with blackcurrants, hibiscus, rosehip and orange peel tangled with sweet aromas of pineapple, mango, passionfruit and banana. With its deliciously fruity taste and a striking reddish tint, this flavourful blend is as uplifting as an island breeze. Herbal Infusions Embrace the fragrant alchemy of these delicate blends combining whole herbs, fruits and flowers as they restore harmony and vitality to your mind, body and soul. Peppermint, England Made from the finest English Mitcham Black Pep permint, this infusion is fresh, aromatic and bright, valued for its digestive and calming qualities. Nile Chamomile, Egypt Originating from Egypt, where it has a history going back to the Pharaohs, Chamomile has an apple-like taste and has been used for centuries for its medicinal properties. This naturally caffeine-free herbal infusion has a calming effect that makes it a perfect drink in the evenings, is good for your skin and has many other health benefits. Lemongrass & Ginger Extremely refreshing and aromatic lemongrass combined with warm and spicy ginger from the Sri Lankan jungle.
