What we have in the Riverland and Mallee of SA: o Ideal climate o Reliable water supply and some rain o Great soils (add water will grow) o First class infrastructure o Irrigation o Transport o Processing facilities o First class towns and communities - Five major centres - all robust o Large scale production capabilities o Enviable Bio-security standards and infrastructure o An abundance of leading edge farming and irrigation technology o Good access to market entry points o The Primary Industry Funding Schemes Act 4

We are poised to move to the next level of excellence (We should not be held at a competitive disadvantage while others catch up) We are about o GROWTH not further decline o Increasing levels of achievement (building much with little) o Working more collaboratively with one another (Horticulture and Agriculture) o Working with all tiers of Government to build Industry... NOT about relief programmes and handouts (except in the case of Exceptional Circumstances) o Increasing our competitiveness through: Improving the scale of our operations Applying our R&D funds locally Increasing our workforce skills through appropriate (local) competency based training EXTENSION programmes to achieve consistent standards of excellence and quality outputs o Continuous improvement and closer engagement with our processor partners o Value adding to build local employment opportunities and employment security o Thought leadership 5

What the Riverland and Mallee Primary Producers Business Centre will add: The capability for the Region s Primary Producers to collaborate effectively, engage with all stakeholders and reach consensus on matters of common interest such as: o The Murray Darling Basin Plan and its implementation o Climate change policy and how our farmers and growers will be affected o The roll out of the NBN and the opportunities it presents for rural Australia o Carryover policy and water trading o Collective bargaining to reduce input costs o Food security o Water security o Salinity zoning o Spray drift o Taxation policy (Volumetric tax on alcohol) o Bio-security policy, standards and implementation o Farming diversification opportunities o Collaborative farming business models o Training, development and Extension o Transitioning to new enterprise business models & incorporating Value Chain principles o Raising awareness of our position as producers, relative to Global Markets 6

Dramatic improvements in productivity, efficiency and professionalism at the industry organisation level will emerge through sharing: o Administration and financial services o Membership management services including integrated data bases o Communication services and capabilities (NBN) o Collectively bargaining to reduce input costs including machinery, vehicles, fuel and telecoms o Web site services o Meeting facilities o Training development and extension facilities o Laboratory facilities and analytical services 7
