General Facts about ProM Developed 2007-2009 Introduction Cologne Coffeena June 2009 Start of serial production Sept. 2009 What does Grind-on-Demand stand for? Ground coffee looses more than half of its aroma within appr. 15 minutes due to oxygen, humidity and light dissolving the volatile aromas out of the broken cells. The whole bean protects the aroma inside the cells. In order to minimise the aroma loss Grind-on-Demand-grinders only grind the amount of coffee beans that are needed for the shot. Dosing is done through a timer in the grinder s software. The doser chamber known from traditional grinders is not needed anymore. Therefore Grind-on-Demand ensures constant quality in every cup and equal treatment for every customer because every dose for every cup is freshly ground. How do I adjust the portafilter holder to the portafilter of my espresso machine? Please follow the operating instructions, or: Remove the portafilter holder from the grinder. Loosen the two screws at the side of the portafilter holder and slide down the fork. Place the portafilter of your espresso machine in the portafilter holder. Lift up the fork in order to hold the portafilter horizontally. Refasten the two screws. What is the capacity of the hopper of the ProM? appr. 260g / 0.58 lbs Is there a hopper with bigger capacity for the ProM? In 2010 we will have a bigger hopper (appr. 500g) available. What is the weight of the ProM? net weight: 6kg / 13.2lbs What is the grind speed of the ProM? appr. 2,3 g/s (fine grinding for espresso) appr. 5,5 g/s (coarse grinding for French press) 1
Which factors does the grind speed of the ProM depend on? Origin of the coffee, Type of coffee (arabica, robusta, etc. ), Size of beans, Blend, Degree of roasting, Cooling method after roasting (i.e. moisture content of the bean), Cleaning status of the grinder Other external influences (humidity, temperature, etc.). What are the main differences between the ProM and the domestic grinder VARIO home? The VARIO is built with 54mm ceramic burrs that produce a smaller grind capacity of 1,6 g/s for espresso grinding. The hopper of the VARIO only holds 220g. The ProM can be used more often per day due to higher quality parts. How do I adjust the grind time of the ProM? On the right side of the grinder the dosing time can be set with the lower wheel showing time. Does the ProM have a double shot function? Yes it does. By touching the Start-button once the grinder changes into double shot mode. The set grind time will be doubled. The iluminated ring at the right side panel is blinking. This function can be cancelled by touching the Start-button again. Does the ProM have the break-function like the K30? Yes. In case the grinding process is stopped by pulling the portafilter/ground coffee bin out of the grinder before the set time has run up, the remaining time is saved. The process continues when the Start-button is pushed in again. The saved remaining time can be deleted by touching the Start-button. Which functions are included in the ProM software? Dosing the amount of ground coffee by time via the lower wheel on the right. Double shot function by touching the Start-button. Break function of the grinding process. Safety sensors at the motor for functionality (idle, blockage, defects) for protection of the electronic parts. Is there a display for the ProM? In 2010 we will have a display as additional equipment. The dosing by time and other information can be managed by this display. 2
Motor What is the maximum recommended daily grinding capacity of the ProM? With the ProM you should not grind more than 150 double shots of espresso per day. How fast does the motor of the ProM turn in rotations per minute? 1830 rpm when grinding coarse for Filter or French press 1640 rpm when grinding fine for espresso (all depending on various infl uences on the grind speed) Which voltages/frequencies is the ProM available in? 200-240V / 50/60Hz / 1~ 100-120V / 50/60Hz / 1~ Can I run my ProM in different power and frequency systems? The motor and the electrical power boards are designed especially for the respective mains network and should not be used with different voltages. It could result in blockade, over-heating or major defects in the electronic boards in the grinder. 3
Grinding Discs / Disc Casing What is the diameter of the ProM discs? 65mm flat Which material are the discs made of? tool steel What ist the lifetime of the ProM discs? The discs should be changed after grinding 500-800 kg of coffee in order to ensure the desired grinding quality. Which are the visible effects of wear and tear of the discs? Low grind speed: Grinding a double shot (appr. 15g) should not take longer than 7 seconds. Uneven particle size distribution in the ground coffee. Higher temperature of the ground coffee. Different sound of the grinder (due to the change from cutting to grating). Can I resharpen the ProM discs? No. Resharpening is only possible from a certain thickness of the discs in order to guarantee stability against bending (e.g. retail grinders). Can I change the grind adjustment without starting the grinder? Changing the grind adjustment from fine to coarse is possible also when the grinder is not running. Readjusting from coarse to fine is not possible when beans are blocking the grinding mechanism. Using force to change the setting to fine could damage the adjustment mechanism or even worse the disc casing. Therefore we always recommend to start the grinder first when adjusting from coarse to fine. 4
Cleaning How often do I have to clean my ProM in order to ensure a constant grinding quality? In principle cleaning is recommended every 1-2 weeks. Depending of the grind adjustment, the daily volume and the type of coffee, heavy use can lead to disposals in the disc casing and the discs themselves (fines, oils, residues), that could derogate the repetition accuracy and the taste. How does cleaning with GRINDZ work? Grind all remaining coffee in the grinder casing.. Fill 35 g of GRINDZ into the hopper (content of one sachet or one can s lid). Adjust the fi neness to coarse (for a better cleaning effect of the GRINDZ -particles). Start the grinder and grind through all GRINDZ the container. Grind appr. 2-3 double shots of coffee in order to purge the residues of GRINDZ out of the disc casing. What is GRINDZ made of? Is it harmful to health? GRINDZ is 100% made out of organic, natural ingredients (et al. wheat, starch) and is completely unharmful to health. It bonds coffee oils and cleans the discs and the casing by abrasion. Any residues in the following shots after cleaning do not affect the extraction or taste of the espresso. 5
