SUMMARY COMPANY OVERVIEW EXAMPLES OF BIOMASS WASTE EXPLOITATION GRAPE SEEDS OLIVE POMACE BILBERRY POMACE CRANBERRY POMACE
COMPANY OVERVIEW INDUSTRIA DERIVATI NATURALI: Devoted to the research, development and manufacturing of active ingredients derived from botanical sources for the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and cosmetic markets. More than 90 years of activities Italian company
GRAPE CROPS More than 60 millions Tons of grape crops produced worldwide. 1/3 is the European Contribution mainly for vinification processes. Production of huge amounts of byproducts (pomace). Currently not valued as high profitable waste but mainly directed to composting or discarded in open areas potentially causing enviromental problems.
GRAPE SEEDS EXPLOITATION The main use of grape seeds is in the production of grape seeds oil : More than 42000 Tons only for Italy, France and Spain. INDENA produces an extract using grape seeds called ENOVITA. We use more than 5000 Tons of grape seeds per year. Use: Treatment of capillary fragility, pheripherhal chronic venous insufficiensy and microangiophaty of the retina.
OLIVE POMACE Olive pomace is a byproduct of the olive extraction process. Its main use is in the food industry for the extraction of sansa oil (usually with solvents). This oil after refiniment is mixed with extra-vergin olive oil to produce pomace olive oil. The pomace can also be used as a soil improver and for the production of Biogas. The amount of olive pomace produced in the world is around 3 millions tons.
OLIVE POMACE EXTRACT Indena uses olive pomace (Italian origin) to produce an hydroalcoholic extract standardized in polyphenol, hydroxytyrosol and verbascoside. The annual amount of olive pomace used is 300 tons. verbascoside hydroxytyrosol USE: Antioxidant and cardiovascular protectants
BILBERRY POMACE The processing of bilberry into juice results in approximately 70-80% of target product and 20-30 % of a residue commonly denoted as pomace. It contains high amounts of dietary fibers and bioactive compounds. It is hence an attractive source of nutrients, for example as animal feed. Indena produces a bilberry extract from the whole bilberry fruit called Mirtoselect. The active principles contained in the extract are anthocynanis.
BILBERRY POMACE Use: The major applications of bilberry extracts are in the realm of vascular healths and ophthalmoloty but animal models and pilot clinical studies suggest a broader clinical profile of anthocyanins that includes memory improvments, cardiovascular health, methabolic syndrome and obesity. Since bilberry fruit are very expensive, as they are not cultivated but are collected in the wild, the use of the pomace can be an attractive alternative. We are at the moment studying the possibility to substitute the use of the whole fruit with this waste material.
CRANBERRY POMACE Cranberry pomace is the main byproduct of cranberry processing industry. It composed primarily of skin, seeds and stems left over after pressing the fruit for juice. Cranberry pomace has limited applications in animal feed because of its low protein content and it presents enviromental problems when it is disposed of in the soil because of its low ph. It is hence important to have alternate use of cranberry waste material. Indena produces already an extract from cranberry juice. The active principle contained in Cranberry extracts are Proantocyanidins of type A.
CRANBERRY POMACE Use: Historically, cranberry juice and extracts have been comsumed to prevent urinary tract infections especially for women (cystitis). There are other health benefits associated to the consumption of cranberry such as reduced risk of cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Cranberry juice is expensive, thouhg unlike bilberry this biomass is cultivated. We are at the moment studying the possibility to substitute the use of the the juice with this waste material.
