Drawings of Grace Dunn for the WPA Curated by Kevin Williams Southeastern Architectural Archive, Tulane University, New Orleans, LA. 2016 This exhibit focuses on pen and ink and pencil drawings done by Newcomb trained New Orleans artist, Grace Dunn (1885-1970), for book projects for the Works Progress Administration in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Some of these drawings were used as illustrations in New Orleans City Guide (1938), and Louisiana: A Guide to the State (1941). Grace Blethen Dunn was born in Minnesota in 1885. In the early 1900s, she was an art student at Newcomb College in New Orleans, working in many different media, including pen and ink, graphite, ceramics, metalwork, and oil painting. She contributed to Newcomb pottery, and her designs are initialed G.B. for Grace Blethen. She relocated to California in 1909, and was successful working as an artist there. Returning to New Orleans in 1910, she married physician, James Frederick Dunn. She later returned to California in the late 1940s, living in South Pasadena. She returned to New Orleans in the later 1950s where she died in 1970. This exhibit is part of NOLA4Women s city-wide exhibitions, Women of New Orleans: Builders and Rebuilders, celebrating the Tricentennial of New Orleans.
