Potato

WHAT WE ARE LEARNING TODAY Hello! I m Potato Paul! Together we ll build our knowledge about Florida s riveting Potato industry. Let s get to work!

FUN FACTS In October of 1995, the potato became the first vegetable grown in space. A spud originally referred to the small hole a potato would be planted in, until around 1845 when the term transferred to the actual potato.

SPOT IT ON THE MAP Florida is home to several large potato growing regions. Over 30,000 acres of seven different types potatoes are grown in selected regions of the state.

HAVE YOU TRIED A FLORIDA POTATO? Florida potatoes are grown throughout the winter. They are available from January through June, with potato season occurring in March, April and May. Look for this logo to find Florida-grown potatoes!

MEET A FLORIDA POTATO GROWER Jones Potato Farm Click here to see the video!

DID YOU KNOW? We ve struck gold! During the Alaskan Klondike gold rush (1897-1898), potatoes were practically worth their weight in gold. Potatoes were valued for their vitamin C, and at the time, gold was more plentiful than nutritious foods.

3-5 LANGUAGE ARTS SCAVENGER HUNT Visit Blue Sky s Farm website, www.bsffl.com., to answer the questions on this worksheet. Can you find all the answers?

NUTRITION NUGGET Potatoes are a good source of potassium and vitamin C. Potassium: Helps regulate fluids in the body Assists with muscle contraction Helps maintain normal blood pressure Vitamin C Helps prevent cell damage in the body Plays a role in supporting the body s immune system Produces collagen which makes healthy cartilage, joints, skin and blood vessels

Healthier Ways To Prepare Potatoes Serve baked potatoes with plain low-fat Greek yogurt, salsa and fresh herbs instead of full-fat sour cream and cheese. Use low-fat milk or chicken broth to prepare mashed potatoes instead of cream and butter. Try oven-roasting sliced potatoes instead of deep-frying potatoes to make French fries. Visit Fresh From Florida for more tasty recipes!

Why do potatoes make good detectives? Because they keep their eyes peeled. What do you get when you cross a potato with an elephant? Mashed potatoes! I m no couch potato! Why did the potato sit down? Because he was a couch potato.
