James Gillray was born in Chelsea on 13th August, 1757. The only surviving child of James Gillray, a soldier from Lanark in Scotland and Jane Coleman. James was sent away at the age of five to be educated at the Moravian Academy in Bedford. Gillray s wit and humour, knowledge of life, fertility of resource, keen sense of the ludicrous, and beauty of execution, at once gave him the first place among caricaturists of his time and has been called the father of the political cartoon.
