VVW News - February 2015 2011 Chablis Premier and Grand Crus... 20% off on 6 bottles 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Papes... 20% off on 6 bottles 2004 Barolos and Barbarescos... 20% off on 3 bottles (see pages 3, 4 and 5 inside) WHITE BURGUNDY VALUE OF THE MONTH 2013 Macon-Villages (Joseph Drouhin) The new vintage of Drouhin s value-priced Macon-Villages is superb. It is immediately attractive, with fresh, appealing Chardonnay fruit, a lovely texture, bright acidity, and a refreshing finish. Subtle and nuanced from start to finish, it never seems to try too hard. It delivers far more elegance and class than you expect at this price. 2013 Macon-Villages (Joseph Drouhin) $16.00 HALF-CASE SPECIAL 15 Percent Off $81.50 ($81.50/6 bottles = $13.58/bottle) DELECTABLE PIEDMONT REDS 2013 Barbera d Alba Il Ciotto (Bovio) 2012 Langhe Nebbiolo (Bovio) Here are two head-turning reds from Piedmont. Famous for its Barolo and Barbaresco wines, Piedmont also produces reds that are far less expensive and imposing, and sometimes, like these two, just amazingly delicious. Bovio s vineyards are located in the Annunziata section of La Morra, the site of the great Barolo vineyards Arborina, Rocche, and Brunate. Their Barbera is sustainably-farmed, hand-harvested, fermented and aged in stainless steel, and bottled early to capture as much of its fresh, luscious fruit as possible. It is very hard to drink slowly. And their Nebbiolo wow! Many are timid about Nebbiolo wines, worried they need a lot of time before they are tame enough to drink. Not so! This two-year-old Nebbiolo is flat out gorgeous. It is fleshy yet focused, rippling with delectable fruit flavors, followed by a fresh, juicy finish that begs another taste. 2013 Barbera d Alba Il Ciotto (Bovio) $22.00 2012 Langhe Nebbiolo (Bovio) $28.00 BOVIO PIEDMONT REDS HALF-CASE SAMPLER 3 bottles of each - 20 Percent Off - $119.50 ($119.50/6 bottles = $19.92/bottle) WHITE BURGUNDY VILLAGE-WINE SALE 2012 Pulignys and Chassagnes The 2012 whites are attractively fresh, plump, succulent and well-concentrated with ripe and moderately firm supporting acidity that is just enough to maintain the proper balance. In 2012 the average alcohol range is between 12% and 13% which contributes to the heightened senses of freshness and drinkability. We bought quite a stash of these six Puligny-Montrachets and Chassagne-Montrachets, as the village-level seems to be the sweet spot in the 2012 vintage. They are already delicious, and will drink well for the next several years. To promote them, we ll offer a 20 percent discount on six bottles purchases this month. FEBRUARY SPECIAL - 20 PERCENT OFF on purchases of six or more bottles of 2012 village-level White Burgundies Regular 20% Off 2012 Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes (Vincent Morey)... $ 60.00 $ 48.00 2012 Chassagne-Montrachet (Thomas Morey)... $ 65.00 $ 52.00 2012 Puligny-Montrachet (Francois Carillon)... $ 70.00 $ 56.00 2012 Puligny-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes (Vincent Girardin)... $ 75.00 $ 60.00 2012 Puligny-Montrachet (Jean-Marc Boillot)... $ 78.00 $ 62.40 2012 Puligny-Montrachet (Etienne Sauzet)... $ 78.00 $ 62.40 These six wines will be featured at our tasting bar on Friday 2/6 and Saturday 2/7.

2 30 PERCENT OFF INVENTORY CLEARANCE SALE Brunello di Montalcino: 2009-2007 Regular 30% Off 2009 Brunello di Montalcino (Casanova di Neri)... $ 68.00 $ 47.60 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova (Casanova di Neri)... $ 98.00 $ 68.60 2008 Brunello di Montalcino (Voliero)... $ 68.00 $ 47.60 Bright ruby-red color. Aromas of red plum, red cherry and kirsch are complicated by sexy woodsmoke and faded flowers. Silky and rather lush, showing a restrained sweetness and considerable finesse to its smoothly ripe middle palate. Finishes with fine-grained tannins and lingering notes of red cherry, herbs, minerals and dried flowers. This very well-balanced and sappy 2008 Brunello delivers plenty of perfume and flavor. It's very easy to drink another glass. (92/100) - Ian D Agata, Vinousmedia.com 2008 Brunello di Montalcino (La Serena)... $ 75.00 $ 52.50 2008 Brunello di Montalcino (Uccelliera)... $ 78.00 $ 54.60 The 2008 Uccelliera is one of the biggest, most powerful wines of the year. Scorched earth, tar, game, licorice and smoke all burst from a surprisingly explosive, full-bodied wine for the vintage. There is no shortage of depth in the glass. It becomes more refined over time, yet remains intense and virile. Cloves, menthol, tar and new leather flesh out on the varietal, imposing finish. Today, the 2008 is bit rustic and rough around the edges, but is a strong effort for the year, and one of the few 2008s that has the potential to surprise in the future. 2015-2023 (91/100) - Antonio Galloni, Vinousmedia.com 2007 Brunello di Montalcino (Brizio)... $ 75.00 $ 52.50 These Brunellos will be open for tasting at our tasting bar on Thursday February 19 2013 Gruner Veltliners FEBRUARY SPECIAL - 15 PERCENT OFF on purchases of six or more bottles of 2013 Grüner Veltliners Regular 15% Off JOHANNES HIRSCH KAMPTAL 2013 Grüner Veltliner Heiligenstein (Hirsch)... $ 32.00 $ 27.20 As delicious as mid-weight GV can be, with a fine salty grip that s fun, not strict; wet Wheaties and black salt; you go back a long way to find a vintage as good as this. (+) - Terry Theise, Importer 2013 Grüner Veltliner Renner (Hirsch)... $ 50.00 $ 42.50 2013 Grüner Veltliner Lamm (Hirsch)... $ 70.00 $ 59.50 A superb vintage of this! Bright, clear, spicy-minty and leesy; it recalls Brundlmayer in its deft balancing of weight, clarity and momentum. Power and snap. The second plus is only hedged pending bottling. (+(+)) - Terry Theise, Importer NIKOLAIHOF WACHAU 2013 Grüner Veltliner Federspiel Im Weingebirge (Nikolaihof)... $ 44.00 $ 37.40 Well this is a miracle-wine. Sparrowy energy; perfumed so pungently it s like smelling your irises and lilacs from inside the house; a delicate minerality, but this wreaks an utter havoc of charm and deliciousness, all with that delicate woodsy breath of the cellar. Numinously gentle, unforgettable wine. (++) - Terry Theise, Importer LEO ALZINGER WACHAU 2013 Grüner Veltliner Federspiel Muhlpoint (Alzinger)... $ 38.00 $ 32.30 2013 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Muhlpoint (Alzinger)... $ 55.00 $ 46.75 2013 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Steinertal (Alzinger)... $ 78.00 $ 66.30 This is a rare GV that leaves all utility and applicability behind. It doesn t matter how you might use it, or what foods you drink it with. It s an agent of divinity. The fragrance is sublime; kaffir and aloe; has the sense of sudden cold air when you cross a mountain stream; for all its acupuncture attack it s also tender and allusive, compact yet it doesn t let up. A low thrum of earthiness and a nascent mineral complexity, setting out on an intricate journey. (++) - Terry Theise, Importer These Grüner Veltliners will be open for tasting at our tasting bar on Thursday February 26

SALE PRICES ON THE BEST OF THE VINTAGE 2011 Chablis Premier Crus and Grand Crus There are basically two types of 2011 Chablis. The first, and by far the smaller of the two, are those that are classic Chablis with good acidities and terroir transparency. The second are those that are round, agreeable and delicious and while very easy to like and enjoy, lack the grip and bracing acidities that one looks for and expects in classic examples. All of which is to underscore the importance of choosing the 2011s carefully, particularly if your goal is to acquire cellar-worthy wines. There are plenty of average and indifferent bottles that are perfectly good white wines but often lack that true distinction that makes the best examples so compelling. By contrast, the finest 2011s are excellent and are well worth your attention. The best producers were in rough order Raveneau, Fèvre, Vincent Dauvissat and Billaud-Simon And the 2011 Chablis we have in stock are... wait for it...raveneau and Fèvre. They are as exciting as Burghound suggests, vibrant, distinctive wines of classic proportions. Check out the reviews below, and take advantage of our February discount on our remaining stocks. FEBRUARY SPECIAL - 20 PERCENT OFF on purchases of six or more bottles of 2011 Chablis Regular 20% Off 2011 Chablis "Vaulorent" (William Fèvre)... $ 68.00 $ 54.40 This is not quite as aromatically elegant as the Montée de Tonnerre but there is every bit as much depth to the green fruit, citrus, quinine and oyster shell suffused nose. There is fine concentration to the powerful, suave and intensely stony flavors that possess superb finishing complexity on the balanced, clean, very dry and energetic finish. As is often the case, this delivers grand cru quality. 2017+ (92/100) 2011 Chablis "Montée de Tonnerre" (William Fèvre)... $ 70.00 $ 56.00 An expressive, airy and cool nose features notes of stone, sea water, floral aromas and white orchard fruit along with plenty of mineral reduction nuances. This is exceptionally rich and concentrated yet the medium weight flavors remain light and pure with absolutely no trace of heaviness on the mouth coating and stunningly persistent finish. This is beautifully refined yet there is no absence of muscle or punch. 2017+ (92/100) 2011 Chablis "Vaudesir" (William Fèvre)... $ 98.00 $ 78.40 2011 Chablis "Bougros-Cote Bougerots" (William Fèvre)... $ 110.00 $ 88.00 This is also completely classic and even more aromatically complex with a plethora of sea shore nuances to the cool green fruit scents. On the palate this is dense, powerful and quite serious with brooding flavors that brim with dry extract that buffers the firm acid spine on the intensely mineral-driven and explosively long finish. This is the biggest wine in the range yet impeccably wellbalanced and if not exactly refined, then certainly not rustic either. If this can add even more depth than I am projecting my predicted score will seem to be overly conservative. 2018+ (93/100) 2011 Chablis "Valmur" (William Fèvre)... $ 120.00 $ 96.00 2011 Chablis "Clos" (William Fèvre)... $ 125.00 $ 100.00 As it was from cask last year this remains quite closed but aggressive swirling liberates ripe aromas of sea breeze, pear, lemon rind, oyster shell and mineral reduction plus an abundance of typical floral scents. The large-scaled flavors are overtly powerful and impressively concentrated as there is plenty of palate staining dry extract that also buffers the very firm acidity that supports and shapes the gorgeously precise finish. This explosively long effort possesses exquisite balance and the tightly wound flavors are going to need at least 5 to 7 years of bottle age to really flesh out and blossom. This is a knock-out. 2018+ (94/100) 2011 Chablis "Montée de Tonnerre" (Raveneau)... $ 165.00 $ 132.00 As is usually the case, this possesses the most refined nose of Raveneau s group of 1ers with its blend of various floral nuances, citrus, stone and ocean breeze scents trimmed in just a hint of wood. There is really beautiful detail to the stony, sappy and sleekly muscled flavors that display a lovely sense of harmony and vibrancy. A stunner. 2019+ (93/100) These Chablis will be open for tasting at our tasting bar on Friday 2/20 and Saturday 2/21 3

2004 Barolos FEBRUARY SPECIAL - 20 PERCENT OFF on purchases of three or more bottles of 2004 Barolos and Barbarescos Regular 20% Off 2004 Barolo (Azelia)... $ 65.00 $ 52.00 Azelia's 2004 Barolo is a super-rich wine loaded with generous black cherries and spices. It is a beautifully poised, balanced Barolo. In recent years Azelia has stepped up the quality of the Barolo by including more juice from their top vineyards, and it shows in this terrific wine which is sure to offer much pleasure over the next decade or so. I can t ask for too much more from a wine at this level. 2009-2016 (89/100) - Antonio Galloni, Vinousmedia.com 2004 Barolo Margheria (Luigi Pira)... $ 75.00 $ 60.00 2004 Barolo Giachini (Revello)... $ 80.00 $ 64.00 A dark profile of black cherries, earthiness, smoke, tar and licorice flavors emerge from the 2004 Barolo Vigna Giachini. Made in a dark, full-bodied style, it offers terrific expansiveness on the palate although some bottle age will be beneficial in smoothing the building tannins that arrive on the finish. The Giachini sees 50% of new oak, which also helps give the wine its roundness. 2010-2022 (92/100) - Antonio Galloni, Vinousmedia.com 2004 Barolo Conca (Revello)... $ 95.00 $ 76.00 2004 Barolo Arborina (Giuliano Corino)... $ 98.00 $ 78.40 2004 Barolo Ambrogio (Scavino)... $ 99.00 $ 79.20 2004 Barolo (Altare)... $ 115.00 $ 92.00 Altare s 2004 Barolo is a sweet, dense wine loaded with considerable fruit that hides the tannic structure that lurks underneath. Licorice, menthol, baking spices and dark red fruit all make an appearance in this superbly well-proportioned Barolo. Sweet, ripe tannins, and a lingering note of mint give this wine a beautiful sense of lift on the finish. It is a lovely wine and is not to be missed. 2009-2024 (93/100) - Antonio Galloni, Vinousmedia.com 2004 Barolo Pajana (Clerico)... $ 130.00 $ 104.00 Clerico's 2004 Barolo Pajana is an explosive wine loaded with layers of deeply spiced dark fruit. It is a notably pure, focused version of this wine that is totally compelling for its overall balance. The south-facing Pajana vineyard tends to give a more fruit-driven style of Barolo but the 2004 is a beautifully complete wine. 2011-2022 (94/100) - Antonio Galloni, Vinousmedia.com 2004 Barolo Campe (La Spinetta)... $ 165.00 $ 132.00 2004 Barolo Bric del Fiasc (Scavino)... $ 175.00 $ 140.00 2004 Barolo Le Vigne (Sandrone)...$ 195.00 $ 156.00 The 2004 Barolo Le Vigne is a phenomenal effort. Sweet, long and pure, it reveals an expansive core of perfumed ripe red fruit, flowers and spices. Despite its notable concentration it is made in a restrained style, showing remarkable elegance as well as harmony, with superb length and finessed tannins on the close. 2008-2019 (96/100) - Antonio Galloni, Vinousmedia.com 2004 Barolo Percristina (Clerico)... $ 195.00 $ 156.00 The 2004 Barolo Percristina sweeps across the palate with masses of silky, dense fruit framed by firm, yet almost impossibly elegant tannins. This is an utterly captivating Barolo for its sheer power, richness and opulence. Despite the wine s size, there is plenty of detail and nuance to explore in this utterly sensual, captivating Percristina. Readers lucky enough to find the 2004 Percristina should not hesitate, it is superb! 2014-2029 (97/100) - Antonio Galloni, Vinousmedia.com The above wines will be open at our tasting bar during February see schedule on pages 6 and 7. 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Papes 2009 is proving to be a very interesting vintage for Chateauneuf. While the wines tend to share a number of traits of their 2007 siblings, those qualities are usually played at a lower volume: concentration without thickness or viscosity, ripeness without a sensation of confiture character, weight and heft without corpulence, and so forth. - Josh Raynolds, Vinousmedia.com FEBRUARY SPECIAL - 20 PERCENT OFF on purchases of six or more bottles of 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Papes Regular 20% Off 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Cuvée du Vatican)... $ 50.00 $ 40.00 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (La Côte de L Ange)... $ 55.00 $ 44.00 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Mas de Boislauzon)... $ 60.00 $ 48.00 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Olivier Hillaire)... $ 65.00 $ 52.00 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Pierre Usseglio)... $ 65.00 $ 52.00 Vivid ruby. Deep red and dark berry aromas show good clarity and turn spicier with air. Juicy and precise on the palate, offering blackberry and cherry flavors and a hint of candied lavender. Closes with very good energy and lift, the spice and dark berry notes repeating. This wine is showing far more elegance now than it did last year. (91/100) - Josh Raynolds, Vinousmedia.com 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Hautes Brusquières (La Charbonnière)... $ 78.00 $ 62.40 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Safres (Clos du Caillou)... $ 78.00 $ 62.40 Bright red. Very fresh and intensely aromatic, projecting scents of red berries, lavender and spices, along with a hint of white pepper. Juicy and incisive, offering nervy strawberry and raspberry flavors lifted by a zesty spice nuance. This silky, seamless, lithe Chateauneuf finishes with impressive clarity and snap and might well pass for a ripe New World pinot noir. Dark fruit preserves, licorice and smoky herbs on the intensely perfumed nose. Lush and expansive on entry, then tighter in the middle, offering juicy black raspberry and floral pastille flavors lifted by a spicy note. Finishes with very good clarity and spicy persistence. Incredible aromas of roasted Provencal herbs, licorice, truffles, kirsch and black raspberries jump from the glass of this dark ruby/purple-hued wine. Full-bodied and voluptuous as well as extremely elegant and poised, the sweetness of the tannin and the wine s unctuosity and viscosity are all remarkable. This is a blockbuster, old vine Grenache to drink over the next 15+ years. 2011-2026 (95/100) - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Beaucastel)... $ 115.00 $ 92.00 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Tintot (Mas de Boislauzon)... $ 125.00 $ 100.00 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Clos des Papes)... $ 165.00 $ 132.00 All of these 2009s will be open at our tasting bar during February see schedule on pages 6 and 7.
