Long days to prepare, set up and then attend but usually worth it. It is scary how susceptible we are to the weather and the media. We had one of our best festivals yet for atmosphere, range and displays. The stand holders all looked great with some really good and different food products. The performers produced good music and the competitions were fun at least for those of us watching. Problem was that on the Friday before a Total Fire Ban was declared which has never happened this late in March. This was bad enough but then the media reported how dangerous the country was and that festivals in the hills were cancelled. They didn t say two small school based events were cancelled just festivals. This meant that many people assumed we were not running. Also the discussion about the extreme fire conditions also put off some city people. They failed to explain this was for the western side of Melbourne and not the Yarra Valley. Sunday was also a Total Fire Ban but Melbourne was drowned with heavy rain. Again the media reported how cold and wet it was but didn t say that this was not the same for all of Melbourne and surrounds. We have had a very dry few months with no significant rain since Australia Day. I told the local farmers not to worry as MIFGS was coming up and we always have at least one day of rain. I was not proven wrong with the first three days being fine and good festival weather but then on Saturday the skies opened. The rains was very heavy with strong winds making it an unpleasant day. Numbers and sales were well down. Sunday started off with some drizzle in outer suburbs so the media spoke... Continued on page 4

Larkman Nurseries Pty Ltd April 2018 4 Clive s Comments continued about another cold wet day however most of Melbourne, especially the show, was fine and pleasant. Again numbers were down. There is not much we or anyone can do about the weather but positive media reports would help reduce the affects. The weather is just part of life and we have to live with it but it does make running events risky. We try to get around by picking statistically fine days or by running over more than one day but it is always a risk. As an event organiser the weeks running up to the function can be quite worrying and we check the weather daily (or even hourly) so as to prepare for the worst. This all adds cost and we all know that at least one year in five will be wet, too cold or too hot. We have to budget for this. It would be nice if the press was aware of how much affect they can have on public behaviour and run with advice and not sensational headlines but then there are fairies at the bottom of the garden. It has also been an interesting week or two in politics and sport. First we have the Ombudsman s report finding that the Victorian ALP had seriously rorted the system in 2014. After several years of fighting the ombudsman (and 1.5million) the ALP accepted the report, repaid the money and apologised and all is well! The public are angry about this (and the other recent rorts on both sides of politics at a State and Federal level) but feel unable to do anything. Then the Australian Cricket team is found to be guilty of ball tampering. This was the last straw, when our national pride lets us down. Yes Warner and Bancroft did scratch the ball but from what I here this is not the first time cricketers have done this and it will aid the bowlers but not win the game. Smith s crime was turning a blind eye to it. The level of sensationalism is greater than all the politicians rorts and the punishment for Smith and Warner is well out of proportion to the crime. It is reported that Steve Smith will lose 5million in earnings plus loss of career. Violent criminals, pedophiles and major scam artists that destroy people s lives get less punishment. I suspect the level of outrage is due to the litany of let downs by public officials. The community is angry and has taken it out on the cricket team. Why do these people at the pointy end of society think they can just keep taking from us? What let the politician in Victoria think it was okay for the tax payer to have his dogs driven hundreds of kilometres across Victoria? Do we not teach values at school? Don t our young ones get some idea of what is right and wrong? I do not believe this is a modern ailment but it is just more obvious. Would we all behave this way if we had the same opportunity? Who knows but we need to let our leaders know that enough is enough. Anyway we are moving through the seasons and temperatures have dropped down to more pleasant levels and we have enough rain for the gardens (In some parts of Australia it is a bit too wet) to grow well. For a significant part of the population life is back to normal with the start of the footy season (AFL and NRL). As an industry we should maximise these positive attitudes and encourage all ages to get into the garden. Indoor plants are on the rise with a whole new generation of plant lovers. We need to convert them to garden lovers. Di, Clive, Simon and Martin wish you all a happy Easter and some good times with your families.
