2/03/2018 Bordeaux Right Bank Highlights St. Emilion & Pomerol Barde Haut 2012 Wine Advocate 90: "An excellent property from the Garcin family, Barde- Haut tends to be an over-achieving estate, with Hélène Garcin and her husband doing a terrific job with their vineyard planted with 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The 2012 has a dense ruby/purple color, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and outstanding concentration, with slight, yet noticeable tannins in the finish keeping it still firm. This is a beautiful wine to drink over the next 10-12 years." Chateau Roc de Boisseaux Silver Bell 2010 By Angelus Family Nose : Complex and highlights black fruit berries with a hint of licorice and a light toasted touch. Color : Beautiful dark ruby color, showing its ability to age long and well. Palate : supple and mellow, has a refined texture with a great acidity level bringing some freshness. It is full and complex, with velvety ripe tannins. The finish is long, with freshness and polished tannins. $230/ btl $220/ btl (12btl+) (60+ btl available) $270/ btl $250/ btl (12btl+) (120+ btl available)
Haut Brisson La Reserve 2010 Wine Advocate 93: "The more beefed-up, structured, tannic and slightly oakier 2010 Haut-Brisson Reserve ratchets up the level of concentration. The fruit seems darker and more foreboding, and the wine cuts a broader swathe across the palate. It is an impressive wine, but much younger and more of a long-term proposition than the regular cuvee. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030." $390/ btl $370/ btl (12btl+) (40+ btl available) Canon La Gaffeliere 2007 Wine Advocate 89: "A lovely chestnuttinged bouquet with satisfying, commendable fruit generosity given the growing season, brimming with buxom raspberry and wild cherry scents. The palate is smooth on the entry, quite gamy in quality and curiously reminding me of a fine Stellenbosch Cabernet blend (meant as a complement). I admire the depth and weight of this Saint Emilion, and while it is just beginning to show some dryness on the finish, it should give pleasure for another 5-6 years. Tasted February 2017." $520/ btl (20 btl available)
Canon 2011 Wine Advocate 93: "The 2011 Canon is a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. It is undoubtedly one of the stars of the vintage, certainly one of the strongest offerings from Saint Emilion. The nose is bright, animated and playful with copious red cherries, fresh strawberry and dark plum aromas bursting from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, backward compared to more extrovert Saint Emilions such as La Mondotte a tensile, poised Saint Emilion that is destined to last longer than its peers. Classic in style, endearing and mineraldriven, this is a superb wine from the estate. This is a supreme success courtesy of former winemaker, John Kolasa. Tasted May 2015." $750/ btl (60 btl available) Figeac 2009 Wine Advocate 94: "gravelly and smoky, what you might describe as austere for the vintage. Stylistically it is actually similar to the 2008 Figeac with an appealing savory entry, grainy tannin, a pinch of black pepper and a slightly clipped, but focused finish. This is one of the few Right Bank wines whereby the terroir is more expressive than the growing season, so it will appeal to those that appreciate the style of Figeac, though not necessarily to those that prefer the voluptuousness of the 2009s. Additionally, comparing it directly to the 2010, I suspect that it might not have quite as much longevity as the succeeding vintage. That said, this is still a knockout Saint Emilion that is going to bestow a lot of drinking pleasure over the years. Tasted July 2016." $1,620/ btl $1,590/ btl (12btl+) (20+ btl available)
Figeac 1986 Wine Advocate 90: "Tasted at the Château Figeac vertical at the property. I am wondering whether I have underestimated the 1986 Figeac given the performance of this bottle, which was far superior to anything encountered previously. It has a compelling, almost Saint Julien-like nose with truffle and leather. It is not intense, but it is certainly full of personality. The palate is medium-bodied with fine acidity; foursquare and conservative, but balanced. It does not possess enormous length and one can still argue that its Cabernet component ought to have bestowed the finest Saint Emilion in a vintage that did not favor the Merlot-based commune. Nevertheless, this remains thoroughly enjoyable and shows class.
