Wonderfully crisp and fresh, it is clean and dry on the palate and has a well balanced and long lasting finish. 91 Jeio Prosecco Brut NV 31.21 DOC Prosecco di Valdobbiane, abv 11.5% The Prosecco grape grows exclusively in the Valdobbiane region of Italy's Veneto, where the Bisol family own some of the best-situated vineyards. This charming sparkler, with its creamy bubbles and light body, makes a perfect year-round apéritif either on its own or mixed with orange juice for a Buck's fizz or peach juice for the ultimate Bellini. 33 Ayala Brut NV 51.33 AC, Ayala, Ay, abv 12% Recently acquired by the Champagne House Bollinger, Ayala provides an excellent Champagne at a more moderate price. Biscuity nose, lowish dosage and a balance that gives good length on the palate. 50 Perrier-Jouët Grand Brut NV 63.17 AC, Epernay, abv 12% Predominantly Chardonnay, giving a lighter style than the Roederer; the quality is assured by keeping the non-vintage on its lees for three years before disgorging. WHITE 24 Mas Rabell 2011 23.25 DO Penedes, Torres, Spain, abv 11.5% Vineyards at high altitude give a cooler climate and enable the local Parellada grape to produce an elegant wine; slightly aromatic bouquet and a soft rounded structure. 10 Les Terres Fumees Sauvignon Blanc 2011 24.25 abv 13% Clean fresh Sauvignon bouquet with attractive fruit on the palate and an elegant finish; slightly leaner in style compared to New World Sauvignon Blanc. Ideal as an aperitif. RED 73 Les Terres Fumées Merlot 2011 23.25 Vin de Pays d Oc, France, J & F Lurton, abv 13% A very well made wine, true to the Merlot grape. Soft and elegant, yet leaner in style compared to the Errazuriz Merlot from Chile. Attractive on its own or with lighter meat dishes. 25 Bordeaux Rouge NV 24.71 AC Bordeaux, Cheval Quancard, France, abv 12.5% A lighter style of bordeaux compared to Good Ordinary Claret from Berry Bros. Predominantly Merlot, with a little Oak ageing; a wine for quaffing rather than for deep discussion.
WHITE CHILE 4 Errazuriz Estates Sauvignon Blanc 2011 24.71 Aconcagua Valley, abv 13% The cooler temperatures of the Aconcagua Valley produce a delightful expression of Sauvignon Blanc in an approachable style. Bordeaux 99 Château Thieuley Blanc 2011 23.67 AC Bordeaux, Chateau Bottled, abv 12.5% This proved very popular at the recent Bordeaux tasting and dinner and so is making a welcome return to the Club list. An attractive blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon produced in stainless steel tanks to retain the freshness and acidity; it will appeal to those who find New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc too assertive in flavour. Burgundy 12 Macon Blanc Villages, 2011 24.54 AC Macon Villages, Caves de Lugny, abv 13% Caves de Lugny is one of the best co-operatives in South Burgundy. A good example of an unoaked Chardonnay from an excellent vintage. 23 Chablis 2011 38.04 Domaine Billaud-Simon abv 12.5% 2011 is an excellent year for White Burgundy and a return to the typical style of Chablis somewhat lacking in the very ripe 2009 vintage. The Billaud-Simon has excellent minerality and acidity and a very clean and dry finish and will appeal to those who prefer their Chardonnay with no influence of oak in the maturation. Loire 58 Pouilly-Fumé 2011 43.33 AC, Domaine Thibault, abv 12.5% Smokey and minerally on the nose, the wine is quite soft on the palate. It will appeal to those who find New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc too assertive. ITALY 77 Pinot Grigio 2011 25.00 DO Veritiere, abv 12% An uncomplicated style of Pinot Grigio, with just a hint on the nose of the smokiness of the grape variety; equally enjoyable on its own or with food. 72 Beneventano Falanghina 2011 28.79 IGT Vesevo, abv 13% From vineyards situated inland from Naples and fermented at a cool temperature to retain Fruit and acidity, the wine has excellent depth of flavour and balance.
NEW ZEALAND 19 Boreham Wood Sauvignon Blanc 2011 29.38 Awatere Valley, Marlborough, abv 12.5% In a space of several decades the South Island of New Zealand has become the touchstone for Sauvignon Blanc. Boreham Wood is a small winery producing a quite restrained style, with ripe flavours on nose and palate and a crisp clean structure. RED AUSTRALIA 26 Billi Billi Shiraz 2008 26.13 Arrarat, Victoria, Mt Langhi Ghiran, abv 13.5% This wine is not in the overblown style of Australian reds; it is now showing attractive spice, maturity and excellent length on the finish. CHILE 54 Errazuriz Merlot 2010 29.00 Curico Valley, abv 14% This is packed with ripe and well balanced fruit. The Merlot character comes through more on the palate than on the nose. Excellent value and enjoyable as well on its own Bordeaux 21 Chateau Heyrisson 2008 24.54 AC Bordeaux, Chateau Bottled, abv 12.5% From a recent vintage, this Claret is made primarily from the Merlot grape and is intended to be drunk in its youth. Represents excellent value. 28 Château Martouret 2008 25.33 AC Bordeaux Superieur, Chateau Bottled, abv 12.5% Owned by members of the Lurton family, who have been active in Bordeaux for many generations. An elegant style of Claret with just a touch of oak ageing. Rhône 37 Cote du Rhone 2008 33.21 AC, E. Guigal, abv 13.5% A majority of Syrah in the blend is complemented by over a third of Mourvèdre, which is why this wine stands out from the vast majority of Côtes du Rhône based on the Grenache Noir. 40 Domaine de L Espigouette, Cotes du Rhone 2009 26.25 AC Cotes du Rhone, Domaine Bottled abv 14% In contract to the Cotes du Rhone from Guigal, this Domaine produces wine which is light, elegant and spicy which illustrates the potential of the Grenache and Syrah grapes.
20 Beaujolais Villages, Prieure de Tracot 2009 26.29 AC, Beaujolais Villages, Domaine Dubost, abv 12.5% This is a really outstanding vintage for Beaujolais. Ripe fruit with a soft structure and excellent length. It can be enjoyed slightly chilled. Languedoc 78 Minervois Le Rouge de L Azerolle 2009 25.00 AC Minervois abv 14% Minervois and Corbieres are the two best known Appellations in the Languedoc. A full bodied and robust style of wine where the relatively high alcohol level is concealed by the ripeness of fruit. SPAIN 13 Ibericos Crianza 2009 26.54 DO Rioja, Torres, abv 13% The first Torres venture in Rioja made from 100% Tempranillo grapes. Very elegant on the palate with a firm structure and good acidity to allow further maturation in bottle. ROSE 60 Domaine Faverot Rosé 2011 42.79 Luberon, France, abv 13.5% A delicious, dry and fragrant petal-pink rosé from the southern Rhône, this wine is a blend of Syrah, old-wine Carignan and Grenache. It makes a delightful aperitif but has enough body to accompany a wide range of dishes, from prawns to salmon, veal and chicken. SPAIN 70 Torres Mas Rabell Rosé 2010 23.25 DO Catalunya, Penedes, Spain 13.5% abv A very attractive Rosé produced in the hills of Penedes in Northern Spain. Wonderful primary fruit on nose with a crisp fresh palate, light acidity and a harmonious finish. Enjoyable on its own or as a partner to lighter foods. AUSTRALIA DESSERT 64 Brown Brothers Late Harvest Orange Muscat & Flora NV 23.25 half abv 9.5% A delightful light style of dessert wine, unlike the European sweet muscats made by the addition of alcohol to retain some natural sweetness.
