Liqueur drinks like Ginja similar to Danish Cheery affordable. The polite and friendly owners speak English. You can walk 100m up on Camino do Palheiro then right 150 on Estrada da Boa Nova. Sometimes a bit noisy. 1.2 km down the ER 102 (Estrada da Boa Nova) 50 m above the bakery Mariazinha. Address: Estrada da Boa Nova 129 Phone : (+351) 291 795 050 <2> Restaurants in São Gonçalo The closest restaurants are to be found in São Gonçalo about 1 km south of Quinta da Fajã 3.6 km drive. Typical opening hours are 12:00-15:00 and 19:00-22:00. There are of course many restaurants in downtown Funchal which is a bit further away. The road to São Gonçalo from Quinta da Fajã The road is marked on the attached map (page 4) by red dots from Exit 13 to the the restaurant by the church. You can drive to São Gonçalo from Quinta da Fajã going back the way you came until Exit 13, 500 m further east on the old road to the airport you Restaurants and shops 2014-12-20.doc Page 1 of 5
turn right at the sign - 1km to São Gonçalo into Estrada da Camacha. You drive on the bridge over the motorway, VR1, and you can now see S.G. After 800 m downhill towards the sea you reach the restaurant street, Estrada do Conde de Carvalhal, by turning sharp right (50m pass Repsol petrol station on your left). Drive about 700m downhill towards Funchal and you will find on your left the restaurant Zarco just after the São Gonçalo church. In the street there is a also a Pharmacy. To go to the Montanha restaurant you would turn left instead where Estrada da Camacha reaches the T-junction of Estrada do Conde Carvalhal and continue uphill another 700m eastward to Montanha on your left. Restaurante/Grill Zarco. This restaurant is fairly smart, is larger and has excellent view over Funchal bay and the sea - not so expensive, also some large portions. You can also order by weight/price per kilo for example barbeque beef cooked on open log fire on the spit. No take away but box for what you cannot eat. Open 12:00-23:00 It has sea view and is a little more expensive than the other restaurant. Address: Estrada do Conde de Carvalhal, 321 - São Gonçalo - about 1.4 km east of the church. 700m from the Repsol gasoline station where Estrada da Camacha reaches the T- junction of the Estrada do Conde Carvalhal Phone : (+351) 291 793 182 <3> Small shops nearby There are only very small shops nearby. To find real Supermarkets and Markets you have to go to Funchal or Camacha village by car or bus or by car/taxi or to Cancela Park shopping centre (open all days 9.00-22.00). Alfredo's Mini bar & mini shop 30 m up from the Quinta main gate in Caminho do Palheiro there is a small shop, Alfredo's (Mon-Sat 07:30-13:00, 15:00-19:00 ; and Sunday morning). Alfredo, a friendly local, has wine, basic items and foodstuffs like pasta, bread, cheese, butter etc, but not fresh meat, or fish nor vegetables (which are, however, available from the Quinta da Fajã). Cabaz da Simpatia 1 km down the ER 102 There is a small fruit and vegetable shop. Address: Estrada da Boa Nova 143. Phone : (+351) 912727683 Padaria (Bakery) Mariazinha Transval 1.2 km down the ER 102 (Estrada da Boa Nova) is the very good bakery & café Mariazinha (open 5:30-23:00 every day!). Address: Estrada Boa Nova 121, Funchal 9060-002 FUNCHAL Phone : (+351) 291 106 310 <4> Supermarkets To find Supermarkets you have to go to Funchal 4km or Camacha village 7 km by car or bus and by car/taxi or to Cancela Park shopping centre 3km (open 9.00-22.00). If you want to shop on the way from the airport you can stop at the excellent Supermarket Pingo Doce (open 9.00-22.00) in Cancela Park shopping centre off Exit 15. They also sell take away food. There is also a wine and drink shop Brandimport. When you come off the motorway from the airport you see Brandimport (closed W/E), opposite exit 15, 100 m below the supermarket. Modelo is another supermarket in Cancela in the street opposite Pingo Doce. In downtown Funchal the closest commercial centre is Anadia on Rua Fernão Orneias opposite the famous Farmers Market in the old town. (Mercado dos Lavadores Mo-Fri: 07:00-20:00; Sat: 07:00-14:00; Sundays & holidays closed). There is a big car park: Parque do Almirante Reis, by the sea West of the Cable car terminal. See small map on page 3. 1 km further West in Funchal centre there is the big Dolce Vita shopping centre (open 9:00-22:00/23:00) on Rua Dr. Brito Câmara 9 it has a large Pingo Doce supermarket also with good and more varied choice of take away food sold by weight as in most take away places. It also has a large underground car park (1 euro/hour). on the opposite side of Dolce Vita is the large Post office and another multi floor car park (cheaper - 0.85 euro and maximum 5 hours charged at present i.e. you can stay up to 24h for 4.25 euro).
